Buzz: No Go on AJ Burnett
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 6, 2007 8:23 am

On Tuesday, at ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the Mets had inquired about Blue Jays RHP A.J. Burnett.

However, today at ESPN.com, Stark says the Blue Jays are not going to trade Burnett or Alex Rios, ‘for now.’

Nevertheless, according to the New York Post, the Mets are not looking at Burnett anyway.

…actually, from what i can gather, people connected to the Mets were actually telling reporters last night, flat out, that these burnett rumors were all false, including their level of interest…

Hmmm…once the page loads, go to the URL and change the “m” in Meetings to uppercase “M”

interesting that it matters.

Nothing gets done at the meetings, except all the executives get drunk and tell stories. Just like any other coaches conference. Then a foundation is laid for future deals and more drinking.

I read on MLBtraderumors that Bonds can prob. be had for 8 million or less. Why not sign him so he can go out like Mays. I know he is a steroid abuser but hey we had Doc and Strawberry. Plus we know that Omar does not care about steroid abuse anyway (Mota).

All of the legal crap isn’t supposed to start until after the season, says Buster Olney. He would almost certainly take a one year deal.

That being said, NO. PLEASE, NO.

Although…

Reyes
Beltran
Wright
Bonds
Alou
Delgado
Castillo
Schneider

That’s downright scary.

I know its all in good fun.. but no lineup with Brian Schneider can be considered scary..

he’s the new rey ordonez.. a black hole of productiviy… we’re esentially going 7 deep with him as our catcher.

No guarantee that it will start after the season. But if so, can you imagine the media circus?

LMillz was dismissed for saying Bend ya knees. What will happen to Bonds? He lied to the feds for crying out loud!!!

ewm,
that sad part is if you look at the numbers, ordonez was a better hitter. he certainly was a better fielder.

as soemone posted earlier. we’re taking on 25% of the worst offense in the league last year. And they weren’t the two-three best hitters of that team!!!!!!!!

Hey you know Castillo would still be the 2nd hitter.
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Bonds
Alou
Delgado
Schneider

Delgado as a 7 hitter, that’s a powerful lineup. Too bad that Beltran would be injured half the year trying to cover all 3 OF spots. I would assume that Church would have to play for one of them each game. Unless Bonds can play a little first.

Hey, nothings happening so might as well talk about stuff that won’t happen. Everyone else seems to be.

If Bonds signs with the Mets, I will be a Tampa Bay fan for the length of his stay.

Go Rays.

Think the Rays will throw in a complimentary Kazmir jersey for my support?

How on earth was Ordonez a better hitter than Schneider is? Is it that he got on base far less (about 50 points lower than Schneider’s last few years, excluding his very much outlaying 1999 season) or his substantially lower power numbers (a 67 point lower career SLG)? Not that that really matters much anyway, since any team can carry some guys who hit at Schneider’s level or worse. Santana was a far worse hitter than either Schneider or Ordonez, but the ‘86 team still led the league in runs, OBP, SLG, etc. They were an awfully “scary” lineup even with a hitter who actually slugged .254.

Any player that will cost the Wilpons big bucks forget it!!

So far on this blog and other sites the MEts are going after EVERY BIG TIME pitcher

NOT happening….Will get the 2nd and 3rd tier players

This is the way our ownership runs things money first for them. We are not the Yankees or RedSox…We have the money they do but the owners want it for themselves. Until no fans in the seats you won’t see TOP players coming here unless we trade a Top player in exchange for one. PERIOD END OF STORY

Guys this is the team we’re going into the season with. It’s time to accept that and start to readjust expectations. We’re just going to have to hope Pedro stays effective, that Maine and Ollie continue their success, that Pelfrey/Humber steps up and that we don’t get hit with injuries. That’s a lot of hope, but really, that’s the reality.

The Mets can still compete with this team, but like last year, it will be a dog fight all year. I don’t like the braves anymore, and the Phillies haven’t improved that much (Lidge will be a bust in that park), so here we go, let’s do it.

Trust me, Omar will bring in another pitcher. It may be Livan but he will bring in more pitching. I would also look for him to bring in some BP arms and a RH OF to partner with Church.

true true

success hinges on Pedro’s health.

As for Lidge, his frail little ego will be destroyed at that launching pad.

I have to wonder. Do you think our interest in Alfredo Amezaga is to take Reyes spot a SS. I know he is a utility player but he has played many games at SS. He’s a decent fielder at any spot. Looking at his numbers he has commited only 22 errors in 2246 innings. That’s around 250 games with only 22 errors not bad at all.
That being said, I am not sure I want to trade Reyes. Just trying to figure out what the interest in Amezaga is.

Amezaga is still young and switch hits and has a ton of versatility. He can play every infield and outfield position admirably. He’s not a starter though. I don’t think they have him eyeballed to replace Reyes.

It wasn’t too long ago that we were crying for some homegrown players. And now we’re so willing to part ways with one? Reyes and Wright are the future. Let’s keep em intact.

Everyone wants an Ace, everyone wants to keep Reyes. Problem is it is looking more and more like we can’t do both. I don’t want to trade Reyes either but we had better get comfortable with Maine being our best pitcher this year.

Cut Omar some slack. There is a lot of time in the offseason, and the deal making really hasn’t started.

besides, the Mets already have an Ace. His name is Pedro. We just don’t know how effective he will be over a full season!

And no, they do not have to have another one. The projected rotation is solid 1-3, and pretty good for the 5 hole with Duque (who won’t be in the pen) and Pelfrey to share time.

That leaves 1 spot to fill, anywhere from 1-4, but say at least a 2-3 level guy.

That means they will be solid (and better than last year) if they get someone better than Glavine. So if the trade comes down for someone at the level of Snell or Blanton (for example only), they will be set. And I still think Heilman could be the guy

2007 - Glavine, maine, Perez, Duque, perez

2008 - Pedro, Maine, Perez, new guy, Duque/Pelfrey

I will be happy to argue that 2008 is better. pedro > Glavine, Maine/Perez will be better with another years experience, the new guy will be better than 2007 Duque, and 2008 Duque is a wash, but Pelfrey should be much better than the early 2007 version.

SO I feel comfortable saying that, if they get a 2/3 mid rotation guy, the rotation will be better top to botttom, and will also be one of the best in the league. AL too.

And hopefully the new guy costs less (in players) than the huge package Santana seems to require.

Bedard would also be nice, depending on the cost.

to sum it up, the Mets can build a solid rotation, with depth (6/7 hole) without clear cutting the entire upper level of prospects, and for sure without trading Reyes!
