Earlier today, at FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal suggested that a big trade was in the works that involved the Astros.
Meanwhile, KBME in Houston is reporting that the Astros are close to acquiring SS Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for SS Adam Everett, 2B Chris Burke and a pitcher.
…hat tip to Rotoworld and MLB Trade Rumors for the link…

Corky from “Life Goes On”?
That’s a pretty weak package, unless the pitcher is a decent minor leaguer.
He he he…
“Weak package…”
Everett sucks and Burke is just as bad. But I guess they’re “ML ready”.
Why is it all these teams are willing to take crap from other clubs, but they want Reyes or Maine from ours?
I know the ‘Stros aren’t a culprit in our pursuit of an ace this time out, but the frustration still adds on.
Is Tejada an ace?
I definitely see that trend as well. It’s frustrating. I mean, the Orioles weren’t demanding Lance Berkman or Roy Oswalt. Hmm…I’m just very interested to see how this Santana situation shakes down. They really might not trade him until midseason; so, if that is the case, the Mets’ 5th starter (Pelfrey?) needs to show something to make that trade happen. I don’t even think that Gomez is really in the 2008 plans that much, so I don’t know how much of a chance he’s going to have to be a “proven” ML hitter.
Perhaps because Tejada is owed $13M (not including deferred bonus money of another $4M) over each of the next 2 seasons.
Because Omar cannot negotiate and other GMs are trying to take advantage of him….
Gammons is reporting that the Brewers are going to non-tender Kevin Mench. He would be an ideal platoon partner with Church.
I mentioned this the other day. Perfect partner and maybe he can play a little 1st as well.
Good pick up if he can play 1B too.
Any chance he can handle 3B in a pinch?
I would have thought that you could get SOMETHING for Mench. Makes me wonder why he is being non-tendered.
Here is something you need to get for Mench:
XXXXXL Batting Helmets and size 8 1/8 fitted cap.
puhahahahaha
get em from Barry, he won’t be playing anytime soon
Garbage p*ckage, are we kidding. I mean I know they want to dump Tejada’s salaray but jeez…get SOMETHING.
well for some reason my original post got deleted or blocked or something but does this mean A) they will look to trade roberts? or B) with the extra cash they can offer bedard even more money than they did. i know he wants out of bmore but ultimately money talks.
I’ve heard the Cubs are interested in getting Roberts
its most likely the first gong to the fire sale.
now they have Burke and Roberts.. wonder what happens to Roberts?
Miggy Tejada, meet your new double-play partner, Kaz Matsui. Man, is that a wierd tandem or what? Better hope for lots of fly balls…in Houston? That is one weak defense.
Wow, what an awful trade for the O’s.
Tejada is actually GOOD, and Burke/Everett…just average. I wonder who’s the pitcher in the deal (probably a prospect)
Tejada isn’t the player he was. Not by a long shot. Unless someone were forcing me to take him as a salary dump with Bedard I wouldn’t even look at him twice.
Check his stats again and notice he missed a few games. He is still an offensive force at SS.
How’s his defense? Isn’t he an OF playing SS?
It actually seems pretty bad for the Astros too. They have Woody Williams near the top of their rotation and they’re going to trade away pitching for a declining infield bat? They need to be rebuilding down there, not helping other teams to do so. Seems like a new GM just trying to make a splash for its own sake…
Matsui will be scoring a lot of runs batting ahead of Tejada and Carlos Lee
if he stays away from contacts and Motel beds.
??
i bet tejada has a decent year, if theres anywhere a RH hitter can excel more than camden yards its enron field.
That place is still called Enron? Shouldn’t they sell the rights and give some money back to the victims?
It’s called Minute Maid Park…..hasn’t been Enron since the crash!
Could Baltimore get any worse? They may as well tear down that whole team. Trade Bedard, Roberts and Menkakais and Hernandez and, well, everyone. Pull a Marlins, it is their only hope outside of Obiwan.
So why couldn’t the Orioles trade him too LAA through us? Bradon wood and a pitcher to the O’s we eat a potion of Tejada’s contract and we get Bedard and send the O’s Gomez and Humber.
why would the Angels give up their top prospect who plays 3B and SS for an over the hill, expensive potential steroid risk?
You know this could be a possible move for us.
What would it take to get Tejada?
Don’t tell he how he’s done or he’s on the steroid list. So is half of baseball right now as far as we know.
He still plays a decent SS and hits for AVG and power.
Then you COULD trade Reyes for Santana and still have prospects to get another pitcher?
I just want to know how this impacts the potential of Os trading Bedard.
It can in 1 of 2 ways. No reason paying Bedard big money to loose if you are rebuilding. However, it does free up money as well.
You’d have to think it negatively impacts things. They have more money. Our only hope is that Bedard continues to throw a fit about having to be in Baltimore. Also, them getting two infielders doesn’t really influence our prospect value because that’s not what we were offering, right?
none, bedard says he doesn’t want to sign in baltimore
if anything, it’s more reason not to
ENOUGH ALREADY!!! no more trade reyes crap! he is 24, the engine of our offense, plays gold glove caliber defense (and I don’t mean like Wright playing “gold Glove” 3B either) not to forget that he is the spark plug that energizes our entire team…sure he faltered when it counted this year, but NOW is when you evaluate him – it’s how he rebounds that defines him!!! be patient, he is a 24 year old kid that played over his head (trying to steal 100 bases) that was rickey getting in his head, if he scales back to trying to steal 55-60 in a season and runs the bases rather than killing his body he won’t shut down in august…jeeze! why must everone try to throw him under the bus? YOU DON’T TRADE REYES!!!! PERIOD!!!!!! I don’t care if it’s for Santana, YOU DON’T TRADE REYES!!!!!
Here, here!
Even though I keep posting things about trading Reyes, I am just giving thought to possible actions. I really do not want to trade Reyes. But, I also realize that we are NOT GOING TO WIN THE WS with the rotation we currently have. If we want an Ace it looks as though we will have to trade Reyes.
if you want to win to WS every year, be a spankee fan! Sure, I would love to see them win the WS, but I would also love to see them put together a nice young squad of talent that will be a larger core that can compete for years to come…why would you put all your eggs in 1 basket and empty the already sparse MLB ready farm? what happens when Alou gets hurt? you going to get Rickey Ledee back out there? there is a certain sense of pride in your team knowing they nurture and develop talent that was drafted or FA signed from the start…you mean to tell me you want a $175 mil payroll (of course that cost is NEVER passed onto the fans is it?) with recognizable names that became what they were with other teams? or wouldn’t you enjoy watching an OF of F-Mart, Beltran (granted KC helped him but still) & Gomez w/ Wright, Reyes, Mulvey, Pelfrey, Kunz, and so on succeed? Personally, I want to see a winner and would just love it if my team won EVERY time they went out….but that’s just not baseball….how many of you were REALLY mets fans when our best player was Butch ‘freakin’ Huskey? that’s the joy of watching your team, feeling like you watched these kids grow into the larger than life guys they become and you get a different sense of pride when they succeed…I would MUCH rather got to war with the guys we have now than to go into it with a team of Bartolo Colon’s, Livan’s and such…why else do you think teams like Cleveland stink for 5 years (or Detroit for that matter) and then BOOM! their youth has developed their team into a perennial contender! I would take SO MUCH more pride in watching that develop than to see my team ‘yankee’ a championship !!!!! sorry for the rambling but sometimes you guys just get me all sorts of fired up with your crazy ideas
So we don’t trade Reyes right?
“(and I don’t mean like Wright playing “gold Glove” 3B either)”
Puhahahahaha
btw, Chipper better get one in his ribs for his comment. Wright or wrong, put one in his ribs.
get it? wright/right
it’s a slow day, guys.
well spoken – at this point we shouldnt trade anyone… our prospects couldnt lose much more valua given the next 6 months, then santana would be cheaper anyhow.. maybe sign livan hernanez or silva if you could get them for a 2 year deal
exactly…if we can put together a package without Reyes, Maine, or Ollie and steal Johan, fine, let’s do it. If not, that’s it, get over it. Time to go to plan Q and sign Livan and/or Freddy Garcia/Carlos Silva and another bullpen arm, just in case.
Or explore trading for Joe Nathan or Joe Blanton and Huston Street. If we can’t get the ace starter, let’s get the “ace” bullpen arm.
Also, Jose Castillo just got cut frmo the Pirates, as I’ve been saying. Perhaps Gotay and another decent prospect can get us Nady back to play with Church in RF. If we can’t get TOP QUALITY, we might as well get a lot of regular quality.
Gives us flexibility with the pen/starters as well. I think Duque will be QUITE effective all season coming out of the pen. And let’s not give up on Pelfrey just yet. He turned a corner in the 2nd half, maybe he can do better.
If the Mets can work a deal with Oliver Perez as the centerpiece, they are going to do it.
Does anyone remember this 3 team deal that almost happened
Mets – get Oswalt
Orioles get Milledge
Astros get Tejada.
Mets – get Oswalt
Orioles get Church & Schneider
Astros get Tejada.
Why is it that these Willis/Pudge rumors won’t go away, even when there are some who claim to know that it will not happen?

a bit of a yankee complex there guy? Yeah, I’d rather not put together a team of stars and wait for a bunch of prospects to be monumentally disappointing. We aren’t all teenagers who have waited a year or two. Pride, please, no such thing in sports.
I am 28, have been a met fan since my 1st game in 1986 when my parents took me…1 – 1 into the 12th inning against the cubs…I had been holding a piss for about 2 innings at the time when my dad looked over to me mid 12th and my eyeballs began to float…he took me to pee in a troth and when we got out I hojo had just hit a walkoff solo HR to end the game…shea went crazy, I was upset, and have loved the mets ever since…I watched Tim Tuefel wiggle his ass before getting ready to hit, Nailz have a giant splotch of dip on his uniform pant leg by the end of the 1st inning, Kevin McReynolds being INCREDIBLY underrated, I cringed when Daryl Boston played for us (man he was overrated), I cried when Kenny Rogers proved he was nothing more than a chicken roaster, my knuckles are STILL scarred from Todd Pratt’s HR when I jumped so high with my fists in the air, I punched my ceiling, this could really go on for days as many great met memories I have growing up, there really are twice as many that should be forgotten but really, it is what made me the fan of them I am today; granted there are older met fans on this board who have seen cleon and swoboda play as well as remember when Willie Mays was a met, but that isn’t my point…the point is you have to see the crap to truely enjoy the greatness that is a division title (boo hoo, we didn’t get to the WS) when you spend years rooting for your team thick and thin, you develop the ability to allow for success, and success isn’t just a WS ring…you kids (wow I am sure a lot of people would get made at a 28 year old calling others kids but for the point of this diatribe please forgive me) you just don’t understand…your team doesn’t have to be WS or bust, that is how the left side of your infield becomes Mo Vaughn and Robbie Alomar with Kevin Appier pitching…just settle down and enjoy the ride…AND DON’T TRADE REYES!!!!
I would love for my team to contend for the WS every year. I also like to see stars come up. That being said its been over 20 years since our last WS. I have been a fan since 85 and got to see 1 WS win.
I DO NOT WANT TO TRADE REYES but I also realize at this point we need pitching and do not have the means.
I DO NOT WANT A 200 MILLION payroll but I understand that sometimes you get caught in a bind and over pay and that’s a luxury of a large market team. You can’t keep all of your prospects and be a real contender. Where would the Sox be without Beckett, Schilling, Ortiz……. The Sox traded Ramirez for a potential injury risk Beckett. That worked well for both sides. Granted that Ramirez was not the player then that Reyes is now.
All I said is that if I could have Santana and Bedard for Reyes and our prospects I think I would do it.
Our rotation would be
Santana, Bedard, Pedro, Maine, Perez. That’s 5 starters under 30 years old in their primes. That is not a win now team!
