During today’s Rule V Draft, the Mets selected RHP Steve Register, who was born in Rockland County, NY.
At his blog for ESPN.com, Keith Law, who has been surprisingly high on all of the Mets prospects, had the following to say about Register…
“Register was a top closer at Auburn before he was drafted in 2004, but the Rockies tried to make him a starter and it didn’t work. As a reliever, he has good control and a 91-93 mph fastball with some sink (although it hasn’t produced a good groundball rate), and a tight slider that should be an average pitch in time. I could see him making the Mets’ club in spring training, and if it saves them from going after the next Guillermo Mota, so much the better.”
…the Mets are using the phrase, ‘he’s a good command guy,’ while discussing register…
Meanwhile, Baseball America had the following to say about him, in their prospect blog…
“He threw 91-93 mph while at Auburn and even led the nation in saves in 2003, the same summer he teamed with Huston Street on Team USA. The Rockies took him in the third round of the 2004 draft, but he has failed to replicate that success as a pro, posting a 4.64 ERA in four seasons. The Rockies had tried him as a starter earlier in his career, but he returned to the bullpen at Double-A Tulsa this season and had 37 saves, which led the minors.”
By the way, according to the draft’s rules, the Mets must keep Register on their major league roster for the entire season or he must be sent back to the Rockies.

I think if a team tries to demote a Rule V guy, we have to offer him back to the original team, but if they don’t want him back we get to keep him as a minor-leaguer.
Yup
But he still has to clear waivers so essentially any ML organization gets a shot at that player
not sure about that. Wouldn’t he still have options left?
Not true.
I just hope that he can “Register” some outs.
I don’t like guys whose last names are actual words.
How about guys whose Spanish names are words, like Reyes, Delgado and Castillo?
Sounds good to me. If he’s replacing Mota, we needed him. Yeah, Mota gave us next to nothing; so this would have to be considered another upgrade on the Mets’ part. And, they addressed their bullpen. Let’s not try to be cynical.
I thought he had to be offered back to the Rockies for $25,000 if we didn’t keep in on the roster. oh well, that stuff makes no sense to me. Honestly, I’m not expecting much, but it could work out well for us.
He sounds like an interesting prospect.
The latest intelligence test is to take all of the newest Mets and make a sentence out of them. Here’s my try:
He Registered for Church at Schneider Field.
Whoops, I left out Bram Stoker (Brian Stokes).
If having Estrada on the Field Stokes you, then something doesn’t Register in your Schneider; and you need to go to Church because you’re a Phillies Bakker.
Does he have a brother named Cash?
lol
and twin sisters named Check and Daily
Nope triplets — you forgot ‘Bridal’ ;-)
this is easily a 5 minute fix for Peterson
You give him too little credit. Easily 3 minutes.
I agree, Jacket will knock out all kinks in 5 minutes tops.
go rockland!
Pearl River!
TAPPAN!!
Low risk here. If he does a good job, awesome. If not, he’s the Rox’s problem.
Those scouting reports are encouraging. Hopefully he can make an impact in the pen.
Relievers are so unpredictable, I’m pretty satisfied that we took him. He’s bound to be better than Jon Adkins, and especially Mota.
Intriguing . . .
actually sounds like he might have possibilities. Probably can’t be any worse that Muniz, etc.
Plus, having closer wxperience is a big plus. He is obviusly used to pitching out of the pen, and in pressure situations.
So, why not give him a chance to fill the Mota rule? The Sele role is open too!
Hey, put Heilman into the rotation, and he can pitch in the 7th/8th.
Think how nice it would be if this kid figured it out with the jacket and won a job in the pen, and (my mouth to God’s ear) Sanchez comes back.
Wagner closing.
Sanchez and Heilman as primary set up guys
Register as a RH swing guy
Feliciano and Schoe as LH swing guys
Sosa as a long reliever.
7 guys, and the 6 non-closers are 2 ecperienced RH set up men, a LH set up guy/LOOGY, a long guy who can also start, and a LOOGY and ROOGY.
Not really a weak link in the bunch (assuming Schoe is used correctly), and only 1 rookie to worry about. And no Mota or Sele.
All 7 guys could really be used to pitch at any point, so the workload can be balanced more.
And this does not even take into account Smith and possibly Pelfrey as a power arm/short guy.
I am starting to think that the pen might not be a real big problem right now.
Even take out Register and Sanchez and plug in Smith and Pelfrey. Less experience with the short guy, but still it looks promising.
They pretty much eliminate the 3 big problems down the stretch
- Mota trotting out on a regular basis
– Sele never getting in, overloading the other guys (and when he did surface he stunk)
- Sosa was getting too much work, and as a late innings guy.
I guess #4 might be Feliciano tailing off. Hopefully that is resolved with rest!
Having 7 viable guys will help immensely to keep them from buring out again.
Almost forgot. If Sanchez comes back strong, that is our closer in waiting to give wags a “blow” when needed, and this Register dude has closer experience just in case.
ALso forgot about the rest of the floatsam like Muniz kicking around.
Free Register!
1. good to see the wilpons open up the checkbook ($50,000)
2. worth a shot. he had a pretty good year in aa last year. doubt he’ll make the team unless this and stokes coming abroad is a signal that heilma will be traded.
Why? Someone has to replace Sele and Mota.
pedro, ollie, maine, el duque, pelfrey
wagner, heilman, sanchez, feliciano, scheneweis, sosa
that’s 11 pitchers. they won’t go beyond that. smith won’t even make the team.
Let’s hold out hope Scotty Gopher-Ball is named
in the Mitchell Report. That might solve The Big O’s
mistake for him!
Except they went with a 7 man pen last year, and I assume they wil again.
Although they really only used 6 (with Sele) so maybe the other bench guy would be more helpful.
With 8 starters all as every-day players this year, plus Castro, Chavez, Anderson, Easley and Gotay (or another IF), the Mets could go with 12 pitchers. But I’m not sure which of those guys plays 1st for Delgado 10 games/year, or who can play SS or 3B when needed…and they’ll probably hit and run for Schneider more than they did for LoDuca.
Unless this guy is a complete disaster in March, he’s
gotta have a roster spot atleast for a couple of months.
After all, The Big O, managed to find one for Sele this yr.
and grandpa Julio in ‘06.
Also, Johan Santana was a Rule-5 guy so, hey ya never
know what you’ve got ’til you let him pitch!
Live on the edge. Give this dude Heilman’s spot, and put Heilman into the rotation.
Heilman + register has to be better than Livan/colon/silva + heilman, right?
Wouldn’t that be a kick if, after all the wailing about an ace, Omar took care of the open spot in the rotation with a rule V pick up?
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Heilman
Duque/Pelfrey
+ all of our devalued prospects still on hand to build up their trade value
I can live with that. Still better than Livan. Man, I hate the idea of that stiff coming on board.
SPLASH!!! Finally the big move we’ve all been waiting for. No seriously though this kid sounds like a good arm for the pen. Sounds like him and Pelfrey should start hanging out together.
Maybe we should take a look into Alexei Ramirez. He’s a 26 year old free agent, Cuban defector and could play SS/2B/OF. He won a gold medal at the Olympics in Athens a few years back and even started started for the Cuban National Team that won the World Baseball Classic too. I know there is always uncertainty when bringing aboard these kind of players, but I think it is safe to assume Ramirez could be no worse than Alfredo Amezega. Plus, Ramirez could probably give Reyes some much needed rest over the haul of a season, and even factor into the outfield.
Here is a link from Baseball America on him:

Any thoughts?
“His birthdate has been listed as being either April 25 or Sept. 22, 1981, depending on different international tournament records. Torres reported the Sept. 22 birthdate in a call to Baseball America.”
History tells us 1981 might be a stretch as well.
So, he would still be a great ST invite.
I like where we are going with the pen. Bring in a bunch of guys who had upside but are very small risks, let them do their thing in the spring and see who steps it up, and put the rest of the guys in the minors and see what happens throughout the year. I wouldn’t mind a top notch 8th inning guy (which Sanchez can be if healthy or Heilman can kind of be if in the right frame of mind) but importing one could work too considering those are not givens. But even so, the biggest problem with our pen was two fold. 1. our starters didn’t go deep enough into games early in the year and it never got better, by the end of the year, our pen was spent, we needed to use basically everyone to much, and it cost us big time. 2. We had Mota, who sucked it up big time and was forced into situations he couldn’t handle based on my #1, and Show sucked it up as well, however, and I’m not saying Show will somehow be dominant, but I see a decent season out of him if he’s healthy.
Overall, signing FA relievers is a no no, and I like where we are going with this. Also, I hope to Joe Smith back in the bigs and performing well. He definitely got tired and lost confidence, but if we can bring him along slowly at first, he’ll be good. Also Kunz has a chance if he can find some control.
Hey guys, I heard the Mets got Johan Santana…is it true?
