I like where we are going with the pen. Bring in a bunch of guys who had upside but are very small risks, let them do their thing in the spring and see who steps it up, and put the rest of the guys in the minors and see what happens throughout the year. I wouldn’t mind a top notch 8th inning guy (which Sanchez can be if healthy or Heilman can kind of be if in the right frame of mind) but importing one could work too considering those are not givens. But even so, the biggest problem with our pen was two fold. 1. our starters didn’t go deep enough into games early in the year and it never got better, by the end of the year, our pen was spent, we needed to use basically everyone to much, and it cost us big time. 2. We had Mota, who sucked it up big time and was forced into situations he couldn’t handle based on my #1, and Show sucked it up as well, however, and I’m not saying Show will somehow be dominant, but I see a decent season out of him if he’s healthy.
Overall, signing FA relievers is a no no, and I like where we are going with this. Also, I hope to Joe Smith back in the bigs and performing well. He definitely got tired and lost confidence, but if we can bring him along slowly at first, he’ll be good. Also Kunz has a chance if he can find some control.

With 8 starters all as every-day players this year, plus Castro, Chavez, Anderson, Easley and Gotay (or another IF), the Mets could go with 12 pitchers. But I’m not sure which of those guys plays 1st for Delgado 10 games/year, or who can play SS or 3B when needed…and they’ll probably hit and run for Schneider more than they did for LoDuca.

History tells us 1981 might be a stretch as well.

Except they went with a 7 man pen last year, and I assume they wil again.

Although they really only used 6 (with Sele) so maybe the other bench guy would be more helpful.
