News: Dodgers Sign Andruw Jones
By D.J. Short - Dec 6, 2007 1:44 am

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports, citing ‘a baseball official,’ that the Dodgers have reached an agreement with free-agent OF Andruw Jones on a two-year, $36 million contract, pending a physical.

Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times confirms the story.

Hernandez writes that Jones’ agent Scott Boras sent an email message to teams on Wednesday stating that his client would be willing to entertain offers for a shorter contract than they were initially seeking, as long as it came from ‘a competitive team.’

According to the report, Jones was believed to be looking for a contract similar to the five-year, $90 million contract that Torii Hunter signed with the Angels.

…man, imagine if jones wasn’t coming off such a sub-par season…still, 18 million a year…not a bad gig…

…you’d have to think the Dodgers would be more willing to part with Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp in a trade after picking up a run producer like Jones…

Well, it happened…someone finally stole Jones. Now the Dodgers will get the benefits of a comeback year. I’m so mad the Mets didn’t get him…36 Mil for 2 years? You must be kidding…what a low risk signing. After this season I will look like a genius for realizing that Jones is not near done producing like he used to.

    • gomets6091 says:

stole Jones? $36 mil over 2 years equates to $18 mil a season, which would have made him the highest paid player in the National League last year (not sure if he’ll be the highest paid next year, but last year it was Todd Helton at 16.6 Mil)…To make a player who hit .222/.311/.413 with 26 HRs the highest paid player in the league hardly seems like a steal, especially when you factor that pretty much everyone agrees that his defense has slipped a few notches from his “Willie Mays comparisons” days.

I agree that he’s gonna have a bounce-back year, and for a while I kinda wanted the Mets to get him, but not for that amount of money.

      • JR. says:

i agree that it is alot of money for the numbers he put up, but he is still andrew jones. I seriously thought (after the milledge trade) that the mets were going to go after him. I know he doesn’t like the cold, but put in in that lineup inbetween beltran and wright, w/delgado batting 6th……lets just say it was a nice thought

        • gomets6091 says:

oh, I agree, I think he would have helped the offense a lot. I see him doing something like .265, 30-35 HR, 85-110 RBI (depending on how the rest of the lineup does, obviously), but I just don’t think that’s worth 18 mil a year. Plus, I feel like he wants to be a center fielder, and right now I think Beltran’s a better CF than he is. Plus, remember last time we had a Gold Glove CF playing RF? It almost cost us 2 guys careers.

    • beej0327 says:

A steal? quite the opposite. why would we want a guy that strikes out 150 times in our lineup. don’t we already have one of those in delgado?! I think that the dodgers are asking for trouble. He’s a good player but he never shows any heart or love for the game. and for 25 homers? id rather have aaron rowand except he’ll hit .300 instead of .230 and will play hard everyday for less money probably.

  2. nagel100 says:

Braves lost a very good player.

  3. JR. says:

maybe wagner was wrong…2nd place is still a good possibility

    • MetsieFan84 says:

Does Wagner care to open his mouth again? Last time he did, it brought us Stokes, traded away Milledge to a division rival and got us Church and Schneider.

Next time he opens his mouth, Heilman might be traded for Juan Pierre.

  4. JR. says:

its almost 3 in the morning and im not even half way done with this final paper due tomorrow morning…as you can see im very tired and bored so please go ahead and explain to me how wagners words brought upon the milledge trade.

    • gomets6091 says:

haha I’m with ya on that one (studying for finals, aka checking Metsblog, MLB.com, and ESPN.com every 10 minutes), and I’m also curious how Wagner cost us Milledge. And who is Stokes?

    • MetsieFan84 says:

You should be doing a paper instead of on a site asking questions. I wasn’t actually serious about it but it’s funny how this all happened after Wagner said they needed more help in the pitching department and said he doesn’t think trading away a Lastings Milledge will help because it will create another hole. He said something along those lines.

    • a says:

I just finished half of my paper. I hope you’re doing better than I am.

  5. JR. says:

oo i see where your getting at… yea i stopped caring about my paper as i watched the knicks actually win a game but thats a whole different topic.

i actually thought the wagner thing got blown way out of proportion, yes its something he shouldnt have come out and said but i think hes expressing the feelings that most of the fanbase has been thinking all offseason.

i remember reading about stokes…was it a trade or just a signing?

  6. Gilch says:

ive been hammering people all day who said they wanted to sign Andruw … but for 2 years? dang… i would have took him for a 2 yr deal

  7. JR. says:

its almost like a trial period for the dodgers

  8. Number41 says:

Goin’ home, empty handed again this year, Omar?
What’s a trip like this cost the organization, with staff and equiptment and what not?
If this guy is just goin’ for the view and the chow, just skip it all together next year!
The results will be the same; close your eyes; what do you see?

  9. NYMetz6986 says:

anyone hear the rumor that the astros are on the verge of a huge 4 team deal…who knows maybe it involves the mets getting oswalt…sometimes stuff like this comes out of nowhere…at any rate i figure theres a decent shot omar would be involved in something.

  10. just-mlb says:

    DAMN…..a 2 year deal ?
    thats not bad at ALL….

but is he really gonna wanna play a corner OF position for those 2 years…cuz with his weight issues, i cant see him playing a better center than beltran..that might influence the deal…30-35 HR from a CF is rare and in higher demand than from a corner OF spot…i dont think he ever COULD have come here for that reason alone…

im surprised however that the Yanks spent 16 MIL on abreau instead of going after Druw…who could’ve patrolled CF giving them flexibility to either move Melky to RF or trade him and resign Abreau..

  11. Gregg says:

Andruw Jones wasn’t worth $18 mil when he was good. I don’t quite understand how teams assess the value of a player. First of all he had the benefit of playing on one of the best teams in baseball the last 10+ years, so you would expect him to have 100+ RBI’s. Who knows what kind of steroids he was taking when he hit 51 HR’s in 2005 (or maybe even 41 in 2006). His numbers pretty much show he’s a 30-35 HR hitter. He has a .263 career average and strikes out about 130 times.

Is he one of the best defensive centerfielders in baseball? Sure, but players don’t get paid much for defense.

I agree with one of the posters above. They should have saved some money and got Rowand. Better risk-reward.

  12. SheaHeyKid24 says:

Speaking of Rowand that’s a guy I’d love to have playing RF for us.

    • BigHangWithEm says:

Please stop with the Rowand nonsense.

Look at the guy’s #s he is no better than a 4th OF on a good team. He doesn’t walk, he strikes out too much, the only reason he has decent HR totals is he played in two of the best HR parks (CWS and Philly) for his career.

Yes he is “fearless” and he smashes his face into walls, but big deal. It’s like Eckstein or Erstadt, writers tie all these “intangbles” to these players because they like them as people and figure that their baseball ability alone won’t make them successful so they have to change them into mythic figures.

Eckstein is a “winner”, he hustles, he “looks like a little leaguer out there”, he sprints to first after a walk (I’m convinced it’s because he doens’t really know what a walk is since he only does it about 35 times a year)

Erstadt is a “fiery leader”, “a blood-and-guts-run-through -the-outfield-fence-gamer”, he punted at Nebraska.

This is the nonsense that people write about to trick us fans into embracing them as great ballplayers despite the fact they are very average (or in Erstadt’s case below average).

  13. coldentoshea76 says:

For us to spend 18 mil a year for Jones would be absolutely ridiculous. The Dodgers are desperate for power, and they’re obviously willing to pay over market value for anything resembling a decent power hitter, but as someone roted above, even a very optimistic rebound year for Jones (especially in a more pitcher-friendly park like Shea or Dodger Stadium) would be something like .260 with 30-35 HRs, so we’d be paying 18 million dollars for someone to get on base less than Church and hit 10-15 more HRs while hitting fewer doubles. Add in the fact that he’s not a particularly special fielder anymore, and I don’t see any way that that’s worth anywhere near that amount of money. And that’s if he has a rebound year. He’s more likely to hit something like .220-.230 with 25 HRs, at which point we’d be paying him 18 mil to be our fourth outfielder.

  14. loopenark says:

Dumb move by the Dodgers. I’d love to have Eithier or Kemp. I know Omar is not in the market for offense, but if I could, I’d trade Heilman and one of the young pitchers for Kemp. He’d be better than Church in RF. Turn Church into a young pitcher to compensate. This is all pretty dumb, but since we’re playing fantasy GM…

  15. edwindrewes says:

Dodgers are going to be the team to beat in the NL now, kinda like we were in ‘06…….

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

      How so exactly?

They have a new power bat because now their team leader in HRs has 23 and not 20?

Or do you think they are trading Bedard?

If they were planning on trading a potential Dave Winfield like Kemp, especially after their dreadful year at the plate, the Dodgers A) would’ve signed a long term deal with a centerfielder, and B) The centerfielder wouldn’t be coming off of a terrible season elsewhere.

In the MLB, you have to prepare for the worst.

It’s possible Jones and Pierre have dreadful seasons, as do Kent, Loaiza and Garciaparra. Schmidt and Bedard are injury risks. They’d be relying on Tony Abreu, Clayton Kershaw, Andre Ethier, Russell Martin, Andy LaRoche, Brad Penny and Takashi Saito to take the team into the playoffs.

This is a decent set of guys, but 3 don’t have MLB experience, 1 is a closer, 2 have proven to be rather above average in a full MLB season, and 1 is an ace.

      Not exactly a WS team.

They are better offer getting a healthy innings eater, i.e. Blanton, at a cheaper price i.e. Andre Ethier coupled with Jon Meloan.

  16. matt_bucc says:

and with that the dodgers traded for erik bedard

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

My exact first thoughts. However, I don’t know if acquiring Jones and trading Kemp and Broxton leaves them with good thoughts heading into the season.

They were near 500 in 2007. Losing a bat like Kemp and an arm like Broxton still is a devastation to their team, even while acquiring Bedard, who is really just surplus anyway.

If ndruw Jones was coming off an amazing year, I’d understand. But the Dodgers’ lineup is way too weak to get Jones and give Kemp who has been exponentially better. Jones would have led the team in HR with 23. He had a .222 average. Not exactly aa full improvement.
Lastly, if they sign Jones to replace Kemp, they probably would have offered him a long term deal, not just two years.
