The Mets have selected RHP Steven Register during the Major League Phase of today’s Rule V Draft.
The 24–year-old Register was drafted by the Rockies in 2004.
Last season, in 60 relief appearances for Colorado’s Double-A team, he had a 4.03 ERA while striking out 48 batters in 58 innings.
Having been selected in the Rule V Draft, Register must be kept in the major leagues the entire season or be offered back to the Rockies for a small fee.
The Mets did not make a second selection in the Major League Phase of the Draft.
Following the Mets, the Phillies selected RHP Lincoln Holdzkom, who had been left unprotected by the Red Sox.
…Update…10:40 am…
The Mets took RHP Garry Bakker during the Triple-A Phase.
Baker had been left unprotected by the White Sox.
In 31 appearances in High-A last season, the 24–year-old Bakker had a 3.67 ERA, while striking out 64 batters, but walking 45, through 83 innings.
…most interesting about this guy is that he has an extra R and an extra K in his name…

I guess its an ok move. WHo knows..Id rather add than subtract with the rule V
Heres the solution:
Sign Colon for the first half of the season, then when he gets hurt , put in Freddy Garcia.
Freddy Colon
Bartolo Garcia
Both throwing to Bramon Schnastro (no where near as cool as Torreastro sounded).
How about Romian Castrider?
Briam Schneidro
Dam I was hoping to get back Jesus Flores from the Nationals, guess that’s not happening.
Will they be pitching behind Lilos Hernanva or Carvan Sildez?
Cilvas Silnandez?
I mean Clivas Silnandez…mix it up a bit
I sure hope we get:
Johik Santadard or Don Harlliss
Phike Humfrey or Mil Pelber?
Wasn’t Santana a Rule V player? Maybe not. Abreu was.
Why waste the effort. How is a AA pitcher gonna make this dynasty in the making staff? Waste of valuable time Mets should be spending building a major league pitching staff. Just another head scratcher.
Has to remain on the 40 man roster or has to remain on the active 25 man roster….which is it?
I seem to remember that Flores had to be up with the big club in Was which is why they likely thought he would not be taken…since he was an A ball player and not really ready to help. He did end up being pretty decent in a limited role but I can see the logic in assuming no one would dip that low to get a young kid on the 25 man roster.
Hence…what is it. 25 man or simply the 40 man?
Both. Otherwise we have to offer him back to his original team.
Yea I’m pretty sure the player has to be on teh big league club all year, unless they are hurt.
So what, the Mets shouldnt’ participate in this draft?
It’s not like they’re sacrificing anything. It’s a no-lose situation. Worse case is he sucks and we give him back.
Yeah, Santana was a rule V pickup. Out of the Marlins system if I remember correctly.
Man, if that’s true and they kept all the young pitchers they had around the turn of the century, they would have had Santana, Beckett, Burnett, Willis, Penny. Pavano in long relief. Not feasible, and I’m sure I’m forgetting somoene, but I’m just thinking.
Burnett was drafted by us… Willis came from the cubs
They had Clement not Willis (they dealt Clement to the Cubs for Willis)
Yeah, I didn’t necessarily mean drafted by the Marlins. I just meant if they played it that way, they could have ended up with all of them.
A pointless exercise on my part.
nah its cool, this all helps pass the time at work! and really isn’t that what this ALL about
lol mos def
Abreu was, and I do believe that Johan was as well…both were taken out of the Astros’ system…Abreu actually went to Tampa Bay via the expansion draft, and then was lost to the Phillies via rule v
From Baseballreference:
November 18, 1997: Traded by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to the Philadelphia Phillies for Kevin Stocker.
Stocker for Abreu, way to go TB!!
Actually, Abreu was selected by Tampa, and traded to the Phillies(for the immortal Kevin Stocker).
http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/abreubo01.shtml
Johan is an even better story. The story goes, the Twins had the first Rule V selection, the Marlins second. The Twins were interested in Johan, but the Marlins were desperate for Jared Camp. So the Twins took Camp first, the Marlins took Santana, and the Twins sent Camp to the Marlins for Santana plus cash.
whoops…strike one for me
Yes he was, the Marlins got him from the Astros (or maybe it was the other way around) and then immdiately traded him to the Twins.
Dan Uggla was a rule V player, too.
Abreu was expansion draft pick by the Devil Rays who turned around and traded him to the Phillthies for Kevin Stocker because they wanted a solid veteran presence at shortstop…
because only one guy works for the mets, and he took valuable time from his day to do this? This is a huge organization we’re talking about here.
1999 Major League Phase of Rule V Draft: 1st Pick – RHP Johan Santana to Minnesota Twins from Houston Astros
according to Baseball America this guy has “the best slider in the Rockies system” whatever that’s worth.
Can he teach it to Pelfrey?
* Rockies have no pitchers who throw sliders
So you are saying this is like being the tallest midget?
Does anyone remember the last Rule V player the Mets selected that the Mets stuck with all year? I think Kelly Stinnet was a rule V in the early ’90’s and Doug Simonds was before that.
BTW – i like the picture. Nice to make fun of the kids name.
Eric Valent, I think.
stud
stud-cycle…surprised omar isn’t trying to bring him back. he did that in a game at montreal.
Yeah, and Valent wasn’t even required to stay on the roster all year becasue he was in the minor-league phase, I believe.
Now if we could only coax Dave Cash out of retirement and bat him eigth when Register pitches.
Scout’s View: Steven Register
By Will Kimmey
June 1, 2004
Steven Register, rhp, Auburn
Register has recorded 25 saves in three years to rank just four behind Finley Woodard in Auburn history. He might have a hard time getting out of second place though, because coach Steve Renfroe moved one of college baseball’s most reliable closers into the rotation with three weeks remaining in the regular season. Renfroe sensed the 6-foot-1, 162-pound junior righthander was wearing down a bit and wouldn’t be able to make multiple appearances out of the bullpen during a series. Register, who was 6-0, 3.78 with 49 strikeouts and 14 walks in 50 innings, struck out seven Georgia batters and allowed three runs in six innings in his second start. An area scout offered his opinion on Register.
“He’s a strike-thrower; he has good command. He’s got an average fastball with above-average life that sinks and bores. He can be up to 93 (mph), but he doesn’t get a good hip turn or get balanced over the rubber and in turn, he’s never quite consistent with his release point and sometimes loses the life on his fastball.
“He’s got an average to plus slider with a short break and some tilt. At times, it’s an out pitch. His changeup is not an average pitch. He’s got to use it more to get better, but he doesn’t have to at the college level.
“He’s got a very quick arm, but I’d be surprised if he’s a pound over 170. He’s not real durable physically. I haven’t seen him go out on back-to-back nights and have the same stuff.
“On the field, he’s a very tougher competitor. He goes after hitters and you see a side of him you don’t see off the field.
“Long term, I see him as a quality middle reliever, on the right club he could be a set up man. Some people like him in the second or third, but he’s probably a fourth-rounder for me.”
interesting, thanks for the post
Anyone else out there think that the Twins seriously misplayed their hand if they really wanted to trade Santana?
1) They trade their insurance starter in Garza requiring them to add likely 2 pitchers instead of one (this includes Liriano coming back) becasue they are losing Carlos Silva either way.
Hence…if they trade Santana, they will lose him, Silva and Garza out of their rotation while adding whatever they get back in a deal for Santana plus they get Liriano back
2) They say they are looking for 2 pitchers to come back in any deal plus they lost Torri Hunter and replaced him with who…Young from the Rays?
3) They were banking on the haul from the Johan trade but by trading away their insurance in Garza and only getting an up and coming outfielder….they have hampered any short term goals they might have had.
bottom line…it would have been smarter for them to hold onto Garza at least until they got a deal for Santana out of the way and they got what they wanted…a ready ML pitcher and another good young arm that was close plus maybe a top prospect outfielder.
then dealing Garza would have been gravy and smart not stupid like it currently appears to be
But that’s still a decent haul for Garza.
It is…Just bad timing since they will need starters and if Santana goes (to the mets as an example) the other two in the rotation could be Heilman and Humber. Yikes
That’s OK. No one in that division can hit. . . .
Oops.
I keep reading that the Twins have tons of young pitching, close to mlb-ready; what they don’t have are position players/offense. If that’s indeed the case, one pitcher + two pos players seems reasonable.
hmmm…
if he pans out… I may have to change my name to ggbakked
Matt,
Since Register was drafted in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft, he must stay on the 25-man roster all year NOT the 40-man or he has to be offered back to the Rockies.
Well, by default, all members of the 25 man roster are on the 40 man roster, but yeah.
Does that mean that if you get a guy in the minor league phase of the rule 5 you only have to keep em on the 40 man not the 25 man?
No, the guy they got in the AAA phase has to stay on the AAA 25 man roster or Mets 25 man roster. It works like that down through each phase of the Rule 5 Draft. And yes, there actually is a 25 man roster for AAA, AA and probably A and Rookie ball too.
if thats the case i guess this guy is replacing sele since that scouting report said that he isnt the type that can go out there back to back days.
the scouting report is from 2004… so things can change
Register spent the first three years in the minors as a starter, never getting past 155 IP. Last year he was in 61 games as a reliever, so yeah I would thing that back to back stuff still holds true.
Well, at least they can use a “chuh-CHING!” sound effect whenever someone is “rung up” . . . Ugh.
Very tough to evaluate this move — seems like the Mets are just stockpiling bullpen arms. If they don’t like him in ST, they can just offer him back to the Rocks.
very nice
THis Bakker guy was in A ball last year as a 24 yr old. But since he was picked in the AAA phase of the draft is he req’d to go to AAA or we lose him?
Im sooo confused on this stuff
Yup.
Garry Bakker has always had problems even in college throwing strikes. The Jacket is going to need about 20 minutes to fix him. Register can pitch, but is hittable and probably needs to develop some way to disguise his pitches a little better.
There are usually some trades of Rule V players that usually follow in the days to come. Maybe there is still a chance for us to get Lahey (I love those Princeton guys, but I’m biased or Capellan (just needs a good work and put them in the back end of the bullpen. Let them develop like Johan Santana did.
I think the NY Post and Daily News are involved in these deals. Man, you must be licking your chops if you’re a headline writer…
“Cash!”
“Register Rings ‘Em Up”
“Moneyball”
Don’t know why they have different phases of the rule v draft, but anyone picked I has to remain on the major league team all year (unless they are nice enough to get hurt and go to the DL!). Otherwise, they have to be offered back to the original team, and put on their 40 man.
I think some teams try to wait until the very end of ST and the 40 man is set and try to sneak them to the minors, hoping that the other team doesn’t want to cut someone to make room for the rule V guy.
Who knows, if they can tweak his mechanics a bit, maybe he can be a live arm out of the pen? How hard could it be to replace Sele?
because the phase the player is picked in, ML, AAA, AA dictates the 25 man roster, ML or AAA or AA, the player is required to be on for the whole season.
Of course if you pick a player in, say the AA phase, the organization can keep that player on either the AA, AAA or ML 25 man roster and not be forced to return the draft pick to the original team.
then why did the nats have to keep floras on their ML roster all year?
b/c he was selected in the ML phase of the draft, not the AAA or AA phase (idk if there is A phase, though I am sure there is).
This has to be a sign that our bullpen is in some trouble this coming season. Register hasn’t even reached AAA and Omar thinks he has the potential to be in our bullpen all year?
I’m hoping I’m wrong and that Omar thinks this kid is that good rather than our bullpen is going to be that bad this year.
And while we’re here, here’s something to think about: I think Omar’s infatuation with reliever is what is hurting us now and probably in the future. We can’t get a top starter because we don’t have any quality arms (non-relievers) to give up. Is it any wonder why that is when Omar has gone after reliever every chance he gets? Case in point, over the last two drafts, we has 7 picks in the top 100 picks (5 in 06, 2 in 07). Out of those, 4 are relievers. When’s the last time a reliever was a top prospect that everyone wanted in a trade?
It’s part of Omar’s *win now* philosophy. College relievers tend to progress faster than other prospects. (Cf Joe Smith vs. Humber or Pelfrey.) And some believe that Kunz will be up this year at some point (last year’s top pick).
Guys picked in the major league portion of the Rule V draft have to stay on the major league team all year, regardless of what minor league level they were picked from. Hence Jesus Flores was kept on the Nats all year, even though he came from AA, not AAA. Otherwise, you have to offer them back for a minimal fee.
However, players picked in the AAA or AA part of the Rule V draft do NOT have to be kept on the major league roster. I believe they do have to be kept on the 40 man roster. Henry Owens, for example, was a minor league Rule V pick for us, and we kept him at AA for the following year (but on our 40 man roster).
Btw, Bakker was picked in the AA Rule V draft, not the AAA Rule V draft.
mlb.com’s draft tracker thingy says it was the AAA Rule V.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/winter_meetings/y2007/index.jsp?mc=rule5
Reminds of our last Rule V pick from SF two years ago. He didn’t make the club, didn’t come close, but when we tried to give him back to SF, they didn’t want him. Think his name was Mitch Wylie.
Did the Mets lose anyone in the Rule 5 draft?
I would have picked Holdzkom.
Didn’t select eleventy billion relievers in last years amateur draft?
term life insurance traffic…
Hello,…
