According to the Boston Herald, it remains a ‘near certainty’ that the Twins will eventually trade Johan Santana before opening day, most likely to the Yankees or the Red Sox, ‘with the Mets a distant third right now.’
However, in Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes that Twins GM Bill Smith may not be bluffing when he hints at keeping Santana through opening day, adding, “Some officials
from opposing clubs agree with me. Others, not so much.”
Nevertheless, according to the Daily News, ‘There was a sense among rival executives that the Mets had made themselves viable.’
During his appearance on WFAN late yesterday, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said, ‘The Mets do seem confident in their efforts to trade for Santana,’ adding, ‘If you ask them if they have a shot, they say they have a shot, or at least a decent shot. So, maybe they know something we don’t know.’
…as i said last night, the way i see it, the Mets can acquire santana if a) the Twins truly committ to trading him, b) the Mets come to grips with offering a six– or seven-year deal, and c) they offer the Twins a package such as Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey or Fernando Martinez, Mike Pelfrey and Aaron Heilman…

AT this point, if it was meant to be so be it, otherwise I am over it….
I’m so giddy about this again….I’m hangin on Twins Blog sites and they all love Gomez…..the fact he’s faster than Reyes….Also saw them chatting it up about Gotay….
This has to get done ~ The Twins need to ship him the the NL so he doesn’t show up and slap them around again and again….Burgos ?? he have any frikin value anymore…..
The NYM have anough MLB talent to ship off….
IN OMAR I TRUST…….
Just to end this wild speculation and completely control his own destiny, he should let the Twins know that if he is not dealt by the start of spring training, he will not waive his no trade clause.
Of course, he should only make this announcement after not being dealt and showing up for the first day of spring training with the Twins. I would love the Twins to get screwed for being greedy…
I think he had already come out and said that about a week ago
This has been such an ordeal! It is frustrating to hear all the “experts” say that the Mets have no shot etc… and the Mets are saying that they are legitimate players in this thing.
Does it make sense that the Twins would rather take quantity over quality?
Does it make sense that they would want Santana out of their own league?
Does it make sense to pillage our farm system (and a significant member of our Bullpen) to obtain this pitcher?
Did anyone else out there have the same nightmare I did where Santana is in a Met uniform and walks off the ound holding his elbow while wincing in pain?
All I know is that I am a WRECK over this whole damn thing.
Yes, Yes, No and YEs.
For the last point, man, think how far back it would set the team if Santana ended up having TJS before the ASB!
santana is ALOT less of a health risk than pedro who is already listed as our “ace”. so if we dont get santana and that nightmare happens with pedro holding his elbow then what? 3rd place thats what. every pitcher has a health risk, ollie can blow out his arm so can maine. these are risks you take if you want to win. if you dont want to take risks then you dont have to but enjoy being a mediocre club with no real high expectations.
those risks are also why you have to have some young, ML ready (or cose to it!) pitchers either at AAA or in the pne.
That was more my point toward the trade propsoals of sending Pelfrey, Humber and Mulvey for Santana.
As soon as Duque goes down (and he will) or god forbid Pedros blows up (or of course Santatna!), who do you call on?
Yup, Chan Ho, Freddie Gacrcia, Brian Lawrence. etc.,
I don’t think they should start the year with Pelfrey and Humber in the rotation. I also don’t want to hit June with Livan and Lawrence.
pretty hardcore deal for a guy has got to be moved now because during the season he wont waive his no trade clause
I am more concerned at this point that:
1. Omar thinks we have adequate pitching – we don’t.
2. He made no other moves such as strengthening the bullpen
3. Our bench is looking thinner and thinner
4. Our new right fielder has never played a full season.
5. Our new catcher hits .235
6. Our minor leaguer system looks like it is in shambles other than Fmart and Mulvey.
1) Mets pitching is probably as adaquate, if not more so, than most other teasm. They could use 1 more solid SP though
2) It is early. BPs often don’t flesh out until ST. He did make 2 moves though to make it better. Picked up Register, and dumped Mota!
3)Bench looks better than last April. They still need a RH OF/1B (like Nady or Mench) for popo and back up duty.
4) CHurch had ~475 Abs last year, which is pretty much a full season. He just got spotted agianst soe Lefties, and will likely get the same this year (se # 3)
5) He did hit that last year, below his career average. He is, in a better line up, going to hit 8th and should do +/- .250. But, he was grought here for defense. Besides, Castro will get ABs vs. lefties, which is what dragged down Schneiders #s
6) Don’t believe the hype. Other GMs blow smoke to get a better deal, most of the media has no clue so they parrot what the “common knowledge” is, and some of the NY guys seem to have an anti-met agenda. Read the later thread. THere is a lot of talent, just lower down, and sometimes that comes fast. They just don’t happen to have 3-4 can’t miss studs abnging on the door (or maybe they do!)
Great post Stick!
I’ll add one more thing…. last year we played the majority of the season with no Castillo, no Pedro, no Milledge, no Alou, a terrible Delgado, an unproductive LoDuca and a mostly unproductive RF in Shawn Green.
This year….Church is more likely to produce more than Green.
This year…Castillo is here for the whole season (and 3 more after that…ugh)
This year….we have Pedro for likely the entire season
This year….we have Alou…..CHECK THAT..INJURY STILL LIKELY TO COME AND REQUIRE MONTHS OF DL TIME
Schneider is at least better defensively than LoDuca and the plan is to use Castro more frequently than in the past.
We should really be better than last year for a host of reasons….at least offensively and in some spots with the pitching.
And with all that, and the historically poor finish (I think they mostly ran out of gas), and they still won 88 games, 1 off the most in the league, and 1 out of the playoffs.
So yeah, I think it is possible for them to do OK even without a huge trade fro a top SP.
A nice mid level guy like Snell though would be very nice.
Stick you are on the stick. Made me feel a little better, but you forget we won’t have Glavine and they have not replaced him. Also rookies cannot be trusted.
Like gowrightgo said….”Great post, Stick!” Especially point #6!
its funny, you could go back in time exactly one year and cut and paste that comment and it would still make sense (assuming we all felt milledge would start in RF)
If I see another picture of Santana on this blog i will pull all of my remaing hair out. Enough already nothing to see here at this point lets move on. Mets are a long shot.
First A-Rod then this. This is why the Mets are always getting used by Free Agents to squeeze more monry out of their prefered destinations (Vladimir, Mussina, Delgado etc) because the mets are always willing to be the sucker.
I am sick of reading anything about Johan Santana. We actually decided with the rest of the other writers on our site, to “Just Say No” to Santana.
It kills me that the entire Winter Meetings was spent obsessing over basically two pitchers, Johan and Bedard. I mean that is all you read anywhere. Yesterday, Matt posted some impressive stats from the past few days, and I don’t remember what the number of posts were, and the word count, but, would it be safe to say that at least 25% of it was Johan driven?
The most ironic part of all is that he landed with neither the Yankees, Bosox, or Mets. In fact, will he even land anywhere else but Minny? Who Knows? Who cares? I’m just weary of the whole Santana situation.
On another note, one of the things I heard mentioned a couple of times was the Brewers entertaining offers for Sheets. Who knows if it was fact or fiction, but if I am Omar I would certainly take a gander. He oozes with talent, but his injury risk could make him low-priced. Of course, that’s if he is even available at all.
Ahhh… rumors…. you gotta love them, but sometimes they make you want to go ARGHHHHH!
The continued mention of the Mets cannot be ignored because there is a strong sense, at least among executives involved in these talks, that Santana will waive his no-trade clause for only three teams: the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets.
This is from today’s Boston Herald. Mets best hope at this point is if neither the Yankees or Red Sox sweeten their packages. From what I read, neither will. So I think he may just start the season with the Twins and maybe they offer him at the trade deadline, and maybe they won’t. But as long as neither the Red Sox or Yankees are clear leaders in this sweepstakes, the Mets chances are good.
