In Newsday, Ken Davidoff explains why the Mets must stop being ‘good citizens’ in the draft and no longer use the ‘slotting system,’ which provides a recommended guideline from the commisoner’s office on when to select a player – and how much he should be paid – so to help limit signing bonuses across the board.
…i have heard and read similar comments to davidoff’s by people at Baseball America when criticizing the Mets drafting style, as well as from fans, be it blogs, in this site’s comments section, or in my e-mail’s inbox…
Fortunately, according to Davidoff, it sounds as though Omar Minaya wants to change his ‘drafting methodology,’ adding that the Mets have not ‘paid over slot’ since drafting Mike Pelfrey in 2005, and ‘they haven’t utilized their considerable financial might to take some risks in the later rounds, either.’
Tagged Omar Minaya |According to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, the Mets are interested in acquiring Pirates LHP Damaso Marte, ‘but not at the current price.’
In his last 140 relief appearances for the Pirates, spanning two seasons, Marte, 32, has a 3.13 ERA while left-handed batters hit .154 against him.
…from what i can gather out of Pittsburgh, the price for marte could be along the lines of OF Fernando Martinez…the buzz from Nashville had been that the Yankees, Braves and others inquired about marte, as well, but also backed off…
Last week, Rosenthal reported that the Mets have made an effort to trade for Rockies LHP Brian Fuentes.
Left-handed batters hit .186 against Fuentes in 2006, and .204 against him last season.
…so, i guess the Mets feel they should trade for a relief pitcher who can get out left-handed hitters…
By the way, last season, left-handed batters hit just .204 against
Scott Schoeneweis, while righties hit .316.
The Rangers hav signed free-agent OF Milton Bradley to a one-year, $5 million deal, plus incentives, reports MLB.com.
D-Backs RHP Livan Hernandez declined salary arbitration, making his departure from the team all but official.
The D-Backs will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of the 2008 draft if Hernandez signs with another team.

Gagne struggled in Boston, going 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 20 games after being traded from Texas earlier in the year.
