Buzz: Mets inquired about Marte
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 9, 2007 12:47 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, the Mets are interested in acquiring Pirates LHP Damaso Marte, ‘but not at the current price.’

In his last 140 relief appearances for the Pirates, spanning two seasons, Marte, 32, has a 3.13 ERA while left-handed batters hit .154 against him.

…from what i can gather out of Pittsburgh, the price for marte could be along the lines of OF Fernando Martinezthe buzz from Nashville had been that the Yankees, Braves and others inquired about marte, as well, but also backed off

Last week, Rosenthal reported that the Mets have made an effort to trade for Rockies LHP Brian Fuentes.

Left-handed batters hit .186 against Fuentes in 2006, and .204 against him last season.

…so, i guess the Mets feel they should trade for a relief pitcher who can get out left-handed hitters

By the way, last season, left-handed batters hit just .204 against
Scott Schoeneweis, while righties hit .316.

Fernando Martinez??? Someone please stop the obviously rampant use of crack amongs MLB GMs.

    • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

hey this is the pirates they can’t afford crack – maybe ripple

    • whoamar says:

If they trade F-Mart fro ANYONE I am gone from this debacle. Also, it sound as if whoamar’s hands are ties by FreddyTampon during the draft, as if it is a unbreakable system that has produced many world championship caliber players for their sotied franchise..

. If this is the case how can we as fans be upset with whoamar? Maybe we owe him a half-hearted apologetic answer that he offers to fans when they dont win after outspending every NL team..

  2. JohnMilner says:

I’m getting a real kick out of these GMs trying to hold up the large market teams. And why not? The worst that can happen is that the teams say “no”.

  3. Vinnie says:

    ummm………………. no.. How about Carp?

  4. sylvan says:

Of course they’re going to start off discussions with an outrageous price. That’s why you haggle them down. Omar should offer them Jose A. Reyes for him.

Demonstrates why Wilie’s use of the bullpen was a big, big part of the problem. Even the lowly Mota seemed to do better in his 1st inning of work, then get shelled in the 2nd inning. Nevertheless, he almost always got sent out there for a 2nd inning….

    • MudvilleNine says:

Well, at that point in the year, could you blame him. The bullpen was imploding. If someone was actually getting guys out, why not put them out there for a second inning? Problem was that they were so tired, they couldnt go out there for a second inning.

  6. PittsburghMet says:

I’m with the crack comment. This sounds like Huntington is trying to do his best Littlefield imitation.

  7. firemetmanagement says:

Just like I keep telling you people-

    Freddie Coupons!

They could have drafted Jered Weaver instead of Humber a few years ago- but cheapo Freddie Coupons didn’t want to spend the money.

    • JavaJoe says:

      One trick pony …huh?

    • gomets6091 says:

umm….Humber was one of the top 5 prospects in that draft. And guess what, the Padres, Tigers, Devil Rays, Brewers, Indians, Reds, Orioles, Rockies, Rangers, and Pirates all ALSO could have drafted Jered Weaver, but didn’t. Can you please come up with “clever” nicknames about their cheapness too?

  8. BSMITTYFDNY says:

He has a point however. Imagine having Weaver right now instead of Humber? My God. We would have the ace we need already. The Mets management does need to stop kissing the ass of MLB and start drafting properly. Who cares what Selig thinks.

    • gomets6091 says:

imagine if we had drafted Albert Pujols before the Cardinals had snagged him with a 13th round pick? Imagine if we had drafted Russell Martin before the Dodgers took him in the 17 round? Imagine if we had drafted Matt Holliday before the Rockies took him in the 7th round? And imagine if we had drafted Jake Peavy, Roy Oswalt, and Brandon Webb before the Padres, Astros, and D-Backs had taken them in the 15th, 23rd, and 8th rounds, respectively. We’d have 90% of the National League all-star team! We’d probably win 125 games!

Folks, the draft is a CRAPSHOOT. There was almost nobody outside of the Weaver family who thought the Mets made a bad move by drafting Humber instead of Weaver. There were a lot of questions about how good Weaver actually was, and combined with his signability concerns it made sense for teams to pass on him. And we’ve lucked out in drafts too: Milledge fell to us for character concerns, and Pelfrey fell to us for signability concerns.

Finally, a point to illustrate how hard to predict the draft is: In 2001, everyone HAMMERED the Twins for not taking Mark Prior, the best college pitcher since Tom Seaver and a virtual lock for Cooperstown, because of signability concerns and instead going with a local high school catcher. 7 years later, would anyone rather have Mark Prior than Joe Mauer?

      • lawgotham says:

Stand up and take a bow. You speak the truth. More than any other sport baseballs’s draft is most unpredicatable. Much harder than football and basketball and even hockey.

me at M.A (mets anonymous) hi im rusty and i am unfortunately a mets fan sorry guy’s its my first time on the boards

  10. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

If we get Santana at the price of Heilman, Gomez, Pelfrey, and another player, we can either

    A) Sign Hernandez or Colon to a 1 or 2 year deal, move Duque to the bullpen.
    B) Trade lesser chips for a reliever, keep Duque in the rotation, also sign Freddy Garcia to relieve and spot start for Duque and be in the rotation, so we don’t basically have an empty spot there late in the season, and also Garcia can be the 5 starter in 2009.

I would like to get a guy like Fuentes or Marte. I would hate to trade for a third lefty specialist.

If we don’t deal for Santana, we can sign Kuroda, in which case:

    A) We start Duque 5, keeping our bullpen and wait for minor leaguers to develop, and let them take over later in the year. Joe Smith, Phil Humber or Eddie Kunz take extra bullpen spot.
    B) Immediately put Duque in the bullpen, start Pelfrey 5th, keep Joe Smith and Eddie Kunz in minors.

    • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

god I hope matt wasn’t pullin our proverbial legs yesterday tilmetsdouspart but idm sorry id have to keep the dookie in the sr ill take my chances on register and munioz as the new guys in the pen and remember smith is a year (more?) seasoned than last i think he will be our bradford for years to come

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Well should Heilman & Pelfrey be traded, I’d rather sign a stopgap for the 5 hole like Colon or Livan and have the bullpen consist of Duque, Sosa, Show, Feliciano, Smith, Sanchez and Wagner.

        • davethenjmetsfan says:

Why are the Mets not signing a Gagne or LaTroy Hawkins for the ‘pen? All of a sudden other teams are signing away good relievers and unless the Mets make a trade, bottom feeders will be left!

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Hawkins is the most inconsistant reliever ever. He really isn’t that good, and I don’t know what you’d expect of him.

Gagne is constantly injured. Not to mention that he was terrible in Boston.

  11. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Let the Mets trade One of Gomez or Martinez, Heilman, Pelfrey, and one of Humber or Gotay or Niese and get back Santana or Bedard.

Then sign Freddy Garcia & Kevin Mench to small two year deals. When Garcia comes back mid season, let him take some innings off of Duque’s starts. Let them split time. Taguchi is old, but he makes contact. Mench isn’t bad at the plate. Either one can platoon with Church in right. Mench or Taguchi can take over for Alou when he gets injured.

Try to reel in Octavio Dotel to a 1 or 2 year deal. Avoid trading for Fuentes or Marte.

I’d even try to get Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu and stick them in a bench role or AAA. They’re a lot like Gotay, and could be great for when Luis Castillo gets injured.

Sign Scott Podsednik, Brad Wilkerson and So Taguchi to minor league contracts, especially if Mench goes to another team. Wilkerson and Podsednik still have potential. Both can have good years at any time. And considering that many teams think very lowly of Wilkerson and Podsednik, they could come VERY cheap.

    • Kalihan42 says:

Wilkerson and Podsednik are not going to take anything less than a major league contract. Castillo and Cantu are not going to take a bench role.

While were at it why don’t we trade for A-rod to be our bat boy….

Come to think of it, it would be worth every penny of his contract to watch him run out to collect the bats.

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Well who the hell wants Podsednik or Wilkerson at this point?

We are entering an age in baseball where you either take big names, prospects, or guys you already have and put them on your team. At this point, not even the worst of teams are going to give Wilkerson or Podsednik MLB deals. Not even the Padres.

PS. Cantu was already in the bench role with Cincinnatti. And the way Castillo played, he won’t get a starting role anywhere.

  12. Kalihan42 says:

Why would the mets be looking for a lefty? They have 3 in the pen already? Unless they are packaging someone away to work out a deal for a an ace…. I can hope…

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

They have two lefty specialists, but only one guy that has proven to get both lefties and righties out: Aaron Heilman, who is probably going to be a chip in a deal for an ace.

They are looking for guys who get lefties and righties out. A setup man, not a lefty specialist.

  13. LMAO. F-Mart? Please. Maybe we can just wait until Marte’s a free agent. I would LOVE him in our pen though. =(

  14. The Glider says:

The only reason I can think of is because they plan on using one of the lefties in one of their upcoming trades. Otherwise, it doesn’t seem to make sense.

  15. sylvan says:

I wonder how many teams have ever carried four lefties in their bullpen before?

A likely factor for Omar is that Mota and Heilman are both righties who can neutralize lefties; with one and perhaps both of them gone, we’ll have a greater need for a LOOGY type of pitcher. El Duque, Duaner Sanchez, Jorge Sosa, and Joe Smith are all weak against lefties.

But unlike Show, who has always been awful against righties and should be used exlusively as a LOOGY, Marte could be a legit setup man.

I wonder if Omar’s thinking is that another lefty for general middle relief duties will give Willie more flexibility to use Show in the LOOGY role.

  16. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

please don’t metion guiermo (i can’t beleive i ate the whole thing) mota i’m already about to hurl
