News: Gagne To Join Brewers
By Regis Courtemanche - Dec 9, 2007 10:10 am

Free-agent RHP Eric Gagne has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement on a $10 million, one-year contract with the Brewers.

Gagne struggled in Boston, going 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 20 games after being traded from Texas earlier in the year.

  1. any santana news today??

I have noticed that he will do a duet with anyone that asks.

Oh wait, you didn’t mean Carlos?

  2. Mr. Mets Butler says:

How does a guy with those numbers warrant $10 million? I don’t get it.

His big season was three years ago with the Dodgers and he has stunk since.

  3. coldentoshea76 says:

If this is what it takes to get Gagne, I couldn’t be happier that Omar stayed far away. Granted, he was effective for Texas before being traded last year, but that was over 33 innings and being used with kid gloves. He hasn’t had a good season since 2004…he may be good again, but you could also just be flushing 10 mil down the tank here. This is why I’d much rather do what we’re doing this off-season- building the pen through bringing in a number of good arms and seeing who rises to the top in spring training and throughout the season- than do what the Brewers are doing and adding over 16 mil to the payroll next year for Gagne, Torres, and Mota.

  4. jctrac says:

That’s gotta be a typo. If Gagne is worth $10MM, then Santana’s contract extension is going to be about $75MM per year.

  5. sthie700 says:

Until Gagne proves otherwise, he is an average closer…the Gagne of the Dodgers is worth this kinda money, but the current Gagne is not worth anything close to that…horrible signing for the Brewers if the deal is really for $10M.

  6. Slob says:

It’s worth a shot at 1 year. Despite his recent struggles, I’m surprised he didn’t get a multi-year deal.

  7. tres says:

Gagne’s agent just raped the Brewers. 10 mil?? For one season?? For a pitcher with his numbers, I would guess 3 million the most. Maybe an extra million for his name..but that about it.

  8. icedrake523 says:

He and Mota are finally reunited.

  9. adropofvenom says:

From what I was reading, the Brewers intentionally overpaid to get him on a 1 year deal instead of two years. As rotoworld said, if he does good and leaves he brings back 2 draft picks, and if he doesn’t do well then Melvin was right to sign him to just a one year deal. It could be alot worse. Short-term deals rarely come back to bite you in the ass.

  10. metsfan1 says:

This deal seems to be overpaying but I thought the Mets should have considered Gagne for a couple of reasons. He would be back in the NL where he dominated. He would be a setup man, not a closer. And it would allow the Mets to put Heilman in a package for a starter without having to rely strictly on Joe Smith, Strictland, Sanchez or the other cast of character the Mets had last year.

10 mil…wow…good thing we have billy for 11m…gotta give the brewers credit for actually spending some money for once….they have some good young players….too bad gagne is a risky investment even for 1 year….he has lost his confidence in his changeup and his fastball gets spread around the field like it’s BP….rut roh

  12. natew says:

and Torres and Mota will probably end up with more saves than Gagne…

It is nice to see a team like the Brewers spending some money, even if it is poorly spent its better than them putting in in their owners pocket like the Marlins…

  13. PittsburghMet says:

Torres might not even show up. Word out of Pittsburgh is that he is mulling retirement. He and his family actually live there year round and he didn’t want to leave.

Maybe Gagne was the Brewer insurance on this.

Who knows, but $10M is an awful lot.

    we missed out here
mets shouldve have took this guy
him and wagner would be a great 1 2 punch
