News: Livan Declines Arbitration
By Regis Courtemanche - Dec 9, 2007 10:13 am

D-Backs RHP Livan Hernandez declined salary arbitration, making his departure from the team all but official.

The D-Backs will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of the 2008 draft if Hernandez signs with another team.

Since the Mets wouldn’t be losing a first rounder to sign him at his point, I wouldn’t mind taking a flier on him. Playing on the same team as his brother might really get the competitive juices flowing.

Neither would I, but for how many years? I can’t think of a reason why he’d accept a contract for less than 3 or 4 years, and there isn’t a reason to think that some team out there isn’t going to offer him 3 or 4. If nothing else he is good for 200 innings.

I’m just not sure I’m interested in him for that long.

Trade Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey & Mulvey/Niese/Humber over to the Twins for Santana. Get him to sign a 7 year, $126 Million contract.

Sign Livan to a 1 year deal.
Sign Mench and Garcia to 2 year deals, $10 Million each.

^^Signing Garcia and Mench for that kind of money will be an amazing investment.

Garcia won’t be an immediate contributor this year, but will probably put up better numbers than Livan, or could be a long man. He can take a rotation spot next year. If we keep Mulvey then we already have a rotation set for 2009 in Santana, Perez(re-sign), Maine, Mulvey and Garcia. Pretty young rotation as well.

As for Mench, he can be a useful righty platoon in right, and if Alou gets injured (more like WHEN Alou gets injured), Mench would be a useful replacement. Also, he can begin the season in left field for 09, or we can sign Dunn, Baldelli or Ibanez. We can even put Dunn at first and keep Mench in left. It leaves us with a really good batting order.

You sure love spending money don’t you.

    • DannyPhantom says:

When is Garcia even going to be available to play. If we wouldn’t be seeing him until the AS break then no thanks.

      • jaxson says:

He might not be a bad investment since Duque most likely will go down about that time.

I think they said that Garcia will be ready around June.

  3. stickguy says:

Please god, Omar better not sign this stiff. He is now one of the worst pitchers in the NL, and pretty much still declining.

FOrget about replacement level, he will be the guy that the replacement level guy replaces!

The Arizona front office must be doing a victory dance that he didn’t call their bluff and they will get a draft pick. You think they wanted him back for another year?

Of all the moves Omar could make this off season to tick me off, this has to be #1. Especially because it probably seals the deal that Pelfrey is gone, and I still think he is primed for a break out year.

If they sign Livan, I guarantee there will be a lively debate on Metsblog by June about wether Omar should cut him and write off the salary!

    • BEACHBOY says:

“32 yr old Pitcher” ?..Where did he get his Birth Certificate ?
From a Times Square street dealer ?

      • jdon says:

A 32 year old pitcher who weighs 500 lbs is like a 40 year old pitcher. Since we are talking about Livan, will that be a hero sandwich pick?

    • sthie700 says:

Would not mind signing Livan to be our #5 if we can grab Santana…he is still good for at least 200 innings and a 4.5-5 ERA…would give whatever SPs we have left, if we acquired Santana, more time to develop in the minors.

      • stickguy says:

I wouldn’t bet the rent money that he will reach 200 innings on the Mets, but I would bet that his ERA will be 5+. His FB makes Glavine look like Nolan Ryan at this point.

        • mdemaio says:

The x-factors in this are his being with Duque and being on the big stage. Hernandez has pitched well in big games (6-3, 3.97 in PS), and pitching with his half brother could push both of them. Shea will and a solid defense should help as well. I think it’s worth taking a flier on him…he also gives the Mets a RH hitter off the bench ;)

        • itsmetsforme says:

when you are with your half brother, do you pitch better?

xfactor my ass. lets let a young cheap pitcher be our mediocre 5th starter.

    • letz_go_metz says:

Gotta agree, Pelfrey may be primed for a breakout year. I think he’ s going to surprise a lot of people, just a question of when.

  4. sylvan says:

The only way I’d agree to bring in Livan is if he signs a contract that says he is only on the roster and only gets paid while Orlando is on the DL.

  5. supermannino says:

Let’s get him as our #5. It will buy time for our young guys.

    Whoah, we’re halfway there…

    Whoah-oh, we’re LIVAN on a prayer…

  6. coldentoshea76 says:

The problem is that we really can’t make any rotation moves until we know for sure what’s going on with Santana, Bedard, etc.- we have no idea what our rotation needs are. The odds are still very good, though, that we’ll need another starter from somewhere. People keep talking as if we have four rotation spots already set in Pedro, El Duque, Maine, and Ollie and so we’re only debating about whether the fifth starter should be a Pelfrey/Mulvey-type or a free agent, but that’s just not the case. Pedro and El Duque will only combine for about a single rotation spot’s worth of starts and innings (and that’s if they both stay on the healthy end of their realistic projections), and Pelfrey, Mulvey, and Humber all pitched in the 150 inning range last year so wouldn’t be able to handle a full starters workload even if given the ball at the start of the season. As things stand right now, we don’t have enough starters to avoid the desperation Lawrence/Lima types we’ve grown to hate so much in the past, so anyone better than that is an improvement as things stand right now. Of course, if we add a top of the rotation starter and lose a number of our young arms, that all changes one way or the other…

  7. firemetmanagement says:

I’d only sign Livan Hernandez if the Mets also get a big pitcher (first)…then I’d sign Livan to be an innings eater. I would not sign Livan alone, however- that would be a PR nightmare. Don’t do it.

  8. adropofvenom says:

I’ve gotten the feeling that the Mets interest in him was overblown. Minaya said something that pretty much hinted at it when he said that “To me, it’s about quality. It’s not so much getting a guy. We will not be afraid to give our young kids a chance to pitch instead of going out there and paying a lot of money for a guy who gives a lot of innings – but they’re not quality innings. There’s a lot of demand for those guys. I’ve gotten a lot of hits on our young guys.”

  9. recoton1 says:

On the plus side, I don’t think we will get Livan. On the minus side, I definitely think we will be getting Bartolo Colon. If you hadn’t noticed, Omar like to use his old GM notes from when he was with the Expos. You can bet your bottom dollar that Fatso Colon ends up in the orange and blue this offseason. Barring a colossal move, this season will rank up there with the Titanic as one of the biggest disasters in modern history. ICEBERG.. DEAD AHEAD.

  10. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I think Omar will panic if he doesnt get Santana soon. He will feel like if he doesnt sign a FA pitcher he wants and waits for Santana to no avail he will be left empty handed. That being said I agree that he signs either Livan or Colon. That would be fine if either was our #5 starter but not our #3 or #4 “innings eater” which is being thrown out as a need for us. We may need a “innings eater” but it must be an ace/stud type of eater. A guarantee stopper every fifth day and his name is Santana. I’m sorry but anyone less then Santana on this team is a failure for Omar in my eyes. We have alot of quantity to offer Minny. We can give them 5 or 6 very good prospects instead of the 2 or 3 other teams are offering. Plus Santana with his no-trade wants to be in the NL on the Mets which weighs in our favor. And we have the cash to sign him if Freddy will allow it. No brainer for me and Omar needs to earn his money now and convince Bill Smith to pull the trigger.

  11. metsfan1 says:

STAY AWAY. I don’t have a problem “taking a flier” on Garcia because he has been dominant in the past, but Livan? Come on. At best he is a #5. Why would we want this guy for more than 1 year. We need to get younger.

  13. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Thats fine. I would give them Perez, Heilman, and 2 lower level prospects as long as he signs long term with us. I hate to give up Perez but he doesnt come close to Santana. And in your scenario we keep Gomez, F-Mart, Pelfrey, and Humber. Fine by me. Maybe we throw them Joe Smith and Church.
