Yanks about to sign Hawkins for one year. That guy is the ultimate anigma. Great stuff, implodes in big games. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Mets bullpen. Always need a Benitez like arm out there.

Chacon would work well in that Oliver-Sele role, no?

I remember how good Chacon was when he came up with Colorado - and he actually was really good in his frist half-season with hte Yankees. I am not surprised by his pitching effectively last year.

interesting. id definitely look into him as a bullpen option then. granted its a risk but it could pay off. if he was going to require compensation id say no thanks esp considering hes coming from the braves.

The pen guys coming off the market are all kind of questionable anyway. Oh, and real expensive. Don't really want another Schoe contract anyway.

They did dump Mota, so that is progress.

There is now quite a large group to sort through. I am guessing the Omar is going with the Tower's approach. Throw everyone against the wall, and see what sticks.

Unless Heilman gets traded, they seem to have 4 spots filled.

Wagner, Heilman, Feliciano, Schoe.

Assuming they go with 7 again (I like 6 with an extra bat, but not my call!), they need 3 more.

So, they are probably stockpiling arms, and waiting for more to fall through the cracks.

Register
Smith
Sosa
Muniz
Collazo
Sanchez ?
Padilla ?
and probably 10 more guys I can't think of.

Plus, assuming they don't trade them all away, some extra starters from the Duque, Pelfrey, Humber pool.

I don't see what is on the FA market that is much better than what they already have to pick from (and if it is, do you want to go 4 years on it?). And any trades are going to be expensive.

So, IMO, they are probably doing the rigth thing stockpiling arms, and waiting until ST to sort them all out. I would expect that Omar will keep his ear to the ground in case soemthing better falls out of a tree.

We haven't done anything to address the pen yet.. meanwhile the options keep coming off the market.. Hawkins, Gagne, etc..

Not saying we should of signed any of them.. but it doesn't seem like we have a players in mind that we want..

And lord knows the bull pen needs some love...

I had liked Dotel then, but I wouldn't give him more then 2 years now, and preferrably 1 year with an option. He just can't stay healthy. Signing him is a risky move, but I understand why they'd rather do that then give 3-4 years to any reliever who isn't much better (If at all).

I would assume the Mets interest in Chacon is more of a relief role. Which I guess rules him out as an option.

Dotel was 7-2 as a starter for the Mets in '99 before they chucked him in the bullpen. I liked him although he is not a "great" pitcher. Matt, please don't start another Santana thread! My browser chokes when there are a grillion comments! Just kidding. WTH is going on!!!
