News: Ticket Prices and Ticket Plans

by Matthew Cerrone on December 15th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

…first off, several readers have e-mailed me to say that the Mets are sending notifications to previous ticket-plan holders announcing an ‘exclusive opportunity’ to purchase seven-packs for next season starting December 18 through the end of the month…so, check your e-mail, i guess…

…second, according to the same e-mails, it appears that ticket prices for next season have been raised as high as 20 percent for some seating levels…

…wow…so, let me get this straight, the team disappoints us, and themselves, they essentially take a step backwards and finish second last season, all while doing nothing – so far – to significantly upgrade the product or experience…yet they have the guts to significantly raise ticket prices…

…on the hand, they’ll probably still sell out, if for no other reason than this is the last season in Shea Stadium…so, what do i know…

By the way, to see recent photos from the construction site of Citi Field, check out Ralf’s pictures at Mets Refugees.

Buzz: Mets and Yankees interested in Prior

by Matthew Cerrone on December 15th, 2007 at 11:41 am

According to the Star-Ledger, citing the player’s agent, the Yankees and Mets have both shown interest in free-agent RHP Mark Prior.

Prior has not pitched in a big-league game since August 2006.

He is 42–29 in 106 starts for his career, with a 3.51 ERA.

…i assume there will be a large number of teams who will try to be creative about bringing him in to their camp…i’m glad to see the Mets are at least interested, though it will be hard to justify giving him a guaranteed roster spot

Buzz: Yankees have talked to Twins

by Matthew Cerrone on December 15th, 2007 at 9:37 am

According to the Star-Ledger, the Daily News, and the Star-Tribune, Hank Steinbrenner told reporters yesterday that he and the Twins recently had ‘a couple of brief calls’ regarding LHP Johan Santana.

Steinbrenner, as quoted in multiple reports…

“It’s up to Minnesota what they want to do and I assume they’re still thinking about trading him. As far as what I’m going to do, I don’t know…The door’s not closed. I’m still thinking about it.”

…this is expected…it doesn’t worry me, though…from what i can gather, santana is not very excited about playing for the Yankees, preferring the Mets and Red Sox far more…plus, Yankees GM Brian Cashman has appeared very reluctant to overpay in young talent to pull off such a trade…additionally, two weeks ago in the Daily News, Bill Madden wrote that the Yankees were concerned about paying such a hefty price tag for one pitcher, as are most teams quite frankly…

…lastly, i have heard from a few people who are closely observing these talks that a) the Twins prefer to trade santana to a team in the National League, and b) the Red Sox are only interested to the extent that the Yankees are involved…frankly, i have a hard time believing this, and remain very, very skeptical, since i’d have to think that if the Twins want to move him they’ll move him to whomever pays the price, regardless of league

News: Padres acquire Jim Edmonds

by Matthew Cerrone on December 15th, 2007 at 9:27 am

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have acquired OF Jim Edmonds from the Cardinals in exchange for minor-league 3B David Freese.

…if you recall, the Padres had been linked by rumor to a variety of teams in an effort to acquire an outfielder, most notably Pirates OF Xavier Nady and Jason Bayhowever, as the Padres announced a day or so ago, those talks either broke down or were never as intense as portrayed in the media…either way, it’s obvious that the price for guys like bay or nady had been too high, so the Padres to turn to edmonds, which is just another example of a) how difficult it may be to make a blockbuster trade in this market, and b) how valuable prospects and young talent are
