Buzz: Astros make offer to Mark Prior
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 18, 2007 7:33 am

According to ESPN, citing the team’s general manager, the Astros have made an offer to free-agent RHP Mark Prior, who scouts believe can ink an ‘incentive-laced,’ one-year deal.

Yesterday in the Daily News, Anthony McCarron wrote that the Mets and Yankees are among 11 teams who have expressed ‘preliminary interest’ in Prior.

from what i can gather, at least three teams from the NL East have expressed interest in prior, and none of them will likely end up signing him…also, he has at least two offers that will guarantee him two years on a major-league roster, while the rest are most interested in the previously mentioned one-year deal with incentives for a second season…lastly, the overwhelming buzz from baseball suggests that prior will sign sooner than later…personally, i have concerns over whether to guarantee him a spot at all…let alone for two years

Prior has not pitched in a big-league game since August 2006.

He is 42–29 in 106 starts for his career, with a 3.51 ERA.

Oh man, this has to be Omar’s fault. You know that every player wants to play for the Mets and live through the media in NY. I can’t understand why Omar does not just go get him. It must be that he’s not trying.

I already know those are the type of comments we will get over this. Fact is, and I get tired of saying it, not every player wants to come to NY and play for the Mets. Just because another team signs him, does not mean that Omar is not trying. People are actually on here saying that Omar is sleeping this offseason. I would love for them to spend 1 week doing Omar’s job and see if they still feel that way. I am sure Omar like most other GM’s is working his rear off right now to try and please his players, fans and most of all his owners. Give it a rest and let him finish the offseason before we say “fire Omar”. Even if we don’t sign or trade for anyone, how do we even know what the real story was? I trust Omar will make the right decision for this team, that’s his job. My job is to be a fan.

We’re a large-market team and should be able to take a 2 year risk on a guy with great stuff with an injury risk rather than on a 2 - 4 year deal for a fat, has-been like Livan or Colon.

I’d rather pay prior to be the next Carl Pavano than watch one of the 2 fatties listed above trot out to the mound to get shellacked every 5 games.

This is an absolute no brainer to me- make him an offer he can’t refuse. If he doesn’t want to play in New York that is one thing, but if its a matter of an extra year or another few million, just make it happen.

If you look at the pitching market, it is obvious that something has to give. It cannot be decided that almost every single major league pitcher isn’t worth the money. At a certain point, this rotation will need to be filled out. If you are looking for players that are below market value, maybe Prior is our man.

Sign him to a 2 year, $10 million deal. We saved $5 million from Mota. Prior could easily be the bargin of the year, and if he’s not, just drop him. We are the New York Mets, and we need to start acting like a NY team. Luckily, we can afford to make mistakes that other teams cannot.

You cannot charge NY prices while avoiding medium risk-high reward options such as these. Prior needs to be pursued and locked up before the offers start pouring in.

Since it appears so obvious that we do not have the talent in the farm to get Santana or Bedard….why are we not taking advantage of the one resource we do have at our disposal…MONEY.

I think we should be signing the best of what is available and then looking again at trading from a position of strength.

    Example……

    1) Sign Prior to a 2 yr $8M deal guaranteed
    2) Sign Colon to a 1yr $6M deal
    3) Sign Silva to a 4 yr $40M deal
    4) Sign Dotel for 2 yr $10M deal

Brings some life into the offseason and certainly guarantees us more options both in terms of trades and in terms of what we can roll out in April to take the field

    For example…..
By signing Dotel, we are getting a potentially excellent reliever and we are providing the team with the option of moving Heilman to the rotation or in a trade for some much needed help

By signing Silva….we have the ammo necessary to pursue smaller deals and still trade away Pelfrey and Humber plus Gomez for an Ian Snell type or Noah Lowry type

By signing Colon and Prior, we are taking a chance that either or both provide something akin to what they once were.

If they do not make it….not that big a deal…it is only money and neither will sign deals longer than 2 years for money that is overwhelming.

Imagine a healthy productive rotation with Pedro, Colon, OP, Maine and Prior. Could be very good.

If Colon and or Prior turn out to be solid in ST, we can possibly have the insurance to trade for Santana by including an OP or a Maine (not a preference but its possible)

I say sign Dotel, Colon, Prior and Silva.

Provide no (zero) no trade clauses with any and all of them. Perhaps if they make good, they appear valuable on the market.

Its better than sitting on our hands which is getting old.

We can go to war with what we have but it is not likely that we will be very competitive that way.

    • therealsince86 says:

Right because all of those players want to come to the Mets and everyone has a price. So you want to spend 20 million on has been pitchers and then next year we will have to over pay again and then again and again.

      • gowrightgo says:

Yes I do. You see in an offseason like this one, our only advantage is money for the “has been” talents I mentioned above. They are risks…all of them including Silva. Dotel, Colon and Prior are the obvious health risk….Silva is a talent risk and will take more years to get.

But the rewards outweigh the risks.

Also…as to whether or not they would come to NY….please. Dont start telling me that we will not be able to attract teams by paying them. We were after all just 1 game removed from being NL East champs 2 years running.

Did you notice the comments from Schneider and Church about coming to NY? Something like thank god I am finally going to a team with a chance to win.

Paying the money, providing the contract length and being NY with a chance to win are all major attractions.

        Go get er done OMAR

    • RunReyesRun says:

I am all for signing Prior. His value will never be lower than what it is now. As others have said, our strength right now is money, not prospects. Give him a 1 yr deal for 5 million and load it up with performance incentives that could give him another 5 and an automatic option kicker as well provided he hits certain milestones (175 innings, 14 wins or whatever). Adding Prior, Dotel, and Colon (give him a similar deal) gives us flexibility, bullpen depth and the chance to get that elusive #1 on the cheap. Go for it Omar!

      • ridethesnake says:

a one year deal with incentives is what the other 10 teams will also offer prior, and he is from the west coast and would likely prefer warm weather and less media.

Give him 2, or even 3 years. His value is likely to be higher in year 2 and 3 anyway. Also, with no incentives, he can take his sweet ass time in rehab and not rush for money and incentive purposes, which will be good for his long-term value and also may play a part in his decision to come here.

  4. ae37jr says:

“at least three teams from the NL East have expressed interest in prior”

you mean there are more then 3 teams in the NL east? I guess we can narrow it down cause only 3 teams actually sign free agents.

  5. pbelli01 says:

Well lets see what happens. Id be willing to do any of those deals you mentioned, except maybe the Silva deal. But the other three are decent risks….but that doesnt mean that they are available. Good proposals, but as has been mentioned, we are not Omar and do not know what the price on these guys are yet.
I agree with realsince86, we gotta lay off Omar and let him do his thing. He has revitalized this franchise over the past 3 seasons and theres not much to work with this offseason.
We can go to war with what we have, and it will be competitve, but probably not playoffs unless alot of things fall right for our pitching staff (Pedro, Duque healthy, Maine and Perez making another leap from good pitcher to solid #1’s, Pelfrey living up to his potential). But right now this team has 86-88 wins written all over them, which is competitve, but not playoffs.

I hate this censor. Maybe I should spew hatred and idiocy instead of trying to craft long, thought out, and hopefully reasonable posts. maybe that way I get them through!

Either that or find a blog that actaully acepts them.

  7. gowrightgo says:

    Censorship man

  8. Blue_n_Orange says:

El Duque can slide into a long relief role with minimal action to keep him healthy while Prior can start until he gets hurt. Then just slide Eld Duque to cover for Prior while he rehabs.

    Managing the inevitable.

  9. metawan says:

My daughter has better attachments in her arm then Prior. Not in favor of this pipe dream. The Cubs know that he is done so should the rest of baseball.

  10. DannyPhantom says:

Personally, I think you sign him and you shouldn’t even have to think about it all that long. If you can get him for a 3 year contract, that is not really that much different than spending the time and money on a younger pitcher pitcher who you don’t know what you’ll get out of.

We are a contender, we are a big market club, the potential upside is incredible. I say he is more than worth a flyer.

In fact, I’m going to call Omar Minaya right now…
