Buzz: Benson Looked Good

…from what i can gather, free-agent RHP Kris Benson threw roughly 60 pitches or so in front of representatives from over a dozen teams yesterday, while looking strong, healthy and ready for 2008…

According to a report from Sunday in the Boston Globe, the Rockies, Phillies, Royals, Yankees, and Dodgers were among the teams expected to be in attendance.

Benson had rotator-cuff surgery after the 2006 season, and missed all of 2007.

In 39 starts for the Mets, during 2004 and 2005, the 33–year-old Benson was 14–12 with a 4.23 ERA.

…when you search Google Images for photos of ‘Kris Benson,’ 12 of the initial 20 photos are of his wife, which is hilarious and most likely why you will not hear him connected by rumor to the Mets during this off-season…

Ironically he is the type of pitcher the Mets could use, but there are others like him we can overpay for the upside without the checkered history (Colon, Prior, and Garcia, then maybe Clement, Lieber and R.Lopez on the next lower level).

I hope they use some of the $20-25mil they have from last year (current payroll $100mil?) and get one from each level (I prefer Colon for innings, but would take Prior too for the potential, as well as Lopez), then trade for another starter with their farm, whether it be everyone for Johan, or two guys for a Snell.

ridethesnake December 18, 2007 at 8:08 am: I didn’t mean Colon and Prior — rather I’d take Prior instead for the higher ceiling… so one of them (with Lopez if you don’t make a trade).

We’re a large-market team and should be able to take a 2 year risk on a guy with great stuff with an injury risk rather than on a 2 – 4 year deal for a fat, has-been like Livan or Colon. Or a soft-hearted guy like Benson

I’d rather pay Prior to be the next Carl Pavano than watch one of the 2 fatties listed above trot out to the mound to get shellacked every 5 games.

I wouldn’t have a problem with him.

Let the Met’s throw some money at guys with upside, instead of the Livans that you know will suck.

Prior would be a great flyer.

Hey, they jacked up ticket prices, so it would be hard to say they can’t afford it!

That’s so funny! I hadn’t finished reading this post when it occurred to me that I no longer remembered what Kris Benson looked like. In my mind he looked so much like John Maine that Maine’s face came to mind when I thought of Benson, so I Google imaged him and sure enough, ANNA.

She was so hot when she was younger, but for some reason her forehead seems to have taken over her body as the dominant feature. Sorry to say that, but someone has to break it to the twins. Size matters I guess and that forehead is mammoth.
