According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have had ‘some discussions’ with
free-agent RHP Octavio Dotel.
…from what i can gather, dotel is seeking a two-year deal, and i believe the Mets continue to have serious interest in signing him…
…it would not surprise me to see the him end up in queens, since the Mets recently non-tendered Juan Padilla…my sense is that the team still feels it may need one more, major-league ready, established, hard-throwing reliever, and dotel, who has played well in new york before, fits that mold…
…as of now, Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Heilman, Steve Register, Duaner Sanchez, Scott Schoeneweis, Jorge Sosa and Billy Wagner are essentially guaranteed spots in the bullpen…of course, register or sosa could certainly be cut, i would think…the thing is, with Joe Smith, Willie Collazo, Carlos Muniz, and hopefully Ambiorix Burgos, among others, acting as possible options, as well, not to mention Orlando Hernandez who could get bumped from the rotation, there is not a whole lot of room out there for a two-year, guaranteed contract…
The Braves acquired Dotel at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for RHP Kyle Davies, only to put Dotel on the 15–day disabled list with a right shoulder strain just 10 days later.
He was was 2–1 with a 3.91 ERA in 24 games for the Royals before being traded and getting injured with the Braves.
Since 2002, pitching exclusively from the bullpen, against roughly 1,400 batters, opponents are batting .200 against Dotel, who has struck out roughly 30 percent of the hitters he has faced.

Burgos had TMJ way too late in 07 Matt.. no way he’s an option for 08.. even when he’s healthy he’s not that good. he’s Jorge Julio part II..
Who the heck is Steve Register??
The bullpen needs some major love.. I think they should by all means upgrade it..
No guaantee at all what we’ll get from Sanchez, he hasn’t pitched in over a year
I like dotel. He’s an upgrade anyway you look at it.
a guy who cannot stay off the DL is looking for a multi year deal. Lay off the loco weed, Mr. D. Try and prove you can go three months without breaking down.
Steve Register was our Rule V selection – meaning he has to stay in the majors or year or he gets sent back to his original team.
True but its a no risk situation. We owe him nothing and he has locked up a spot just as much as Joe Smith has locked up a spot.
Hm.. for a guy who AA batters were hitting .279 against.. I would hope we wouldn’t not sign a proven arm to keep him around…
anybody know what kind of draft pick well get for lo duca?
Dotel can’t stay healthy. I don’t trust him.
Do you trust the show? Or Sosa? or Joe Smith?
The bullen was horrendous last year… the only 3 guys guaranteed spots should be Heilman, Feliciano, and Wagner…
The pen was one of the better in the league the 1st half of the season but then the starters ran away and the pen got over used. I have no idea how good it can be with no Mota and less use>
I also like Sosa, why not let him take the Sele role. Except actually use him, more like what we did with Oliver.
dotel was a POS with the mets the first time (and hopefully last time) around. he is now a much older POS. stay away.
i think dotel is an upgrade. if hes replacing mota hes a + bc if hes healthy hes definitely better and if hes not healthy whoever else pitches is better than mota. but in all seriousness i dont think our bullpen is bad it just got worn out. which is why omar needs to get starters, this nonsense of saying maine and perez are aces is ridiculous not bc theyre not good or dont have potential but they havent shown any sign YET that they can anchor a staff by going deep into games consistently and save arms. thus relying on them to do something theyve never done in their careers is foolish. a guy like silva will help this partially but you still need an ace bc its one thing to go 8 innings and let up 4-5 runs its another thing to let up 0-2 and give your team a real shot at winning and staying rested.
I wouldn’t mind getting Dotel, I think he is an upgrade over a guy like Burgos. But I don’t think it’s necessary. I know a lot of people wanted to shake up the bullpen completely after last year, but all things considered getting rid of Mota and getting a healthy Duaner Sanchez back is a huge boost to the pen. Show isn’t my favorite guy in the world, but he’s good at getting out lefties. Heilman and Wagner are much maligned but realistically are pretty reliable. Feliciano I like, too. So again, I think it wouldn’t hurt to get Dotel, but I also won’t shed any tears to see him sign with someone else.
Matt,
This was not your best work. First, Burgos will miss virtually all of ‘08. Second, to suggest that these 7 guys are virtual locks is flat out wrong. Assuming health for everyone but Sanchez… Wagner, Feliciano, Heilman will be there… The middle of the pen will include Schow, with two of the following: Sosa, Register, Smith, Sanchez, a vet on a minor league deal, someone signed b/w now and March, someone acq’d by trade. The long man could be any of the young starters (Pelf, Humber, Mulvey, etc., El Duque, a vet on a minor league deal (like Oliver, Sele) or Sosa or Register. There are about 300 possible combinations at this point. Our starting lineup is set, as is probably our bench, but the BP is wide open, except for 4 guys.
Pelfrey, Humber, and Mulvey will not be in the pen. There’s not enough work for any one of them to help them get better. All three are better off down at AAA starting if none of them aren’t starting for the big club.
dotel is good IF he stays healthy which is a big if. our bullpen is already ten times better than it was last year by trading away mota. he must’ve lost like 8 games for us by himself.
a frontline pitcher is of major importance here. the bullpen is the easiest part
Hopefully well draft pitchers with our 1st 3 draft picks in the 2008 draft!!!!!!!!!!
