According to a post on Monday from Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports, free-agent LHP Kyle Lohse is considering offers from the Mets and Phillies, ‘both of which could go to four years.’
However, according to Todd Zolecki at his blog for the
Philadelphia Daily News, there is nothing to the above report from Yahoo!.
Meanwhile, in a report for Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes that the Mets ‘do not seem particularly interested’ in free-agent starting pitchers Livan Hernandez, Carlos Silva or Lohse, ‘unless their prices drop.’
In 34 starts for the Reds and Phillies last season, the 29–year-old Lohse was 9–12 with a 4.63 ERA, while striking out 122 batters through 192 innings.

scraping the bottom of the barrel.
It’s definitely not the answer.
It’s a made up rumor by the ever-reputable Yahoo! Sports. Debunked by all NY and Philly reporters (tho Phily DN picked up the Yahoo report)
I am fine with signing Kyle Lohse.. as long as he takes the league minimum. I’ve seen Lohse play a few times and may have the worst stuff i’ve ever seen. And if we are looking for a guy to throw less that 200 innings and have a high 4’s ERA then we might as well get pelfrey up there and save the money. But even with Pelfrey, i am not confident at all with this rotation or even the offense for that matter. This is not a team that can compete in the playoffs. Thank god the Braves and Phillies havent made an big moves otherwise wed be a third place team. All i gotta say is that if Omar signs Lohse then we might as well forfeit 30 games this season. I pray that Omar has soemthing in the mix. if its not Santana then at least be prior or colon or even Livan. just anyone but Lohse!
I can’t believe Johan Santana gets 124 comments and the buzz surrounding the immortal Kyle Lohse has only generated 30 comments and counting….
b/c when you make a negative comment here, you get blasted by the more “knowledgeable” and the most “die-hard” fans.
Not only is it not the answer, but the salaries these guys are trying to get are absurd. So, they don’t get these guys or any other high salary guys, why are our ticket prices increasing??
We “do not seem particularly interested” with any pitchers…..
they must all want their own private jet and billboard…
“unless their prices drop.”
The Mets are too damn cheap if they think Livan Hernandez is too much.
Crikey - the Mets are d*mned if they do and d*mned if the don’t with some of you.
It’s not that the Mets are “too cheap” to go after Livan, it’s that they don’t think he’s worth what he’s asking for - which if it’s anything more that 2 years/$8M they’re absolutely right.
That’s right. Livan, Lohse, Silva … at those prices/years … does not solve anything. It just causes more of a long term problem.
I mean, look, the Mets don’t have what it takes go get an ace. Clearly they don’t. They are not getting one. They are better off just putting Humber and Pelfrey or Mulvey in the rotation then signing one of these turds to a long term contract.
I just wish they didn’t lead on the fans for the entire off season. They consistently told us that they were going to “get an ace”, “improve the starting pitching”. Maybe they tried … but at this point, stop treating us like we’re stupid and just say “we can’t get what we want so we’re going to go with what we have”. Just tell us that.
They won’t do that though, because they want to sell tickets.
Yeah, what he said….lol
While I get the frustration and feel it too….why would they announce the failure to secure top level pitching?
First, Spring Training is not for another 2 months and the season does not begin for another 4. They may yet make a deal even if the prospects right now do not look good for that happening.
They had no choice but to admit that the season showed mgt that both the rotation and the pen had weakness in it. They also admitted the catching position was a problem defensively last year and they were totally dissatisifed with Green in RF last year an the production they were getting.
As I see it….they have addressed much of what was needed.
In the pen, they jettisoned the weakest link in Mota and are expecting back a healthy Sanchez. Plus they signed Matt Wise who appears to be a solid pickup and they plucked that kid Register who may or may not make the club but is addition by subtraction at the moment with Sele gone also.
In the catching area…regardless of the ba of Schneider….we know his OBP is actually better than LoDuca’s for his career which is critical for a #8 batter plus he is worlds better defensively and likely better at calling a game.
In RF, we got better by removing Green and placing in Church who at minimum will be around league average and have 30 more RBI than we got from Green. It sucks we were not willing to go to war with Milledge but maybe the mets know something we fans dont about the kid. You better hope so because that trade does not sit all that well with me.
Now in the rotation, they lost Glavines innings but improved the production with the expectation that Pedro will be good and win 15 games. I see that as likely.
Where we did not get better is at the bottom of the rotation. Pelfrey and Humber are serious ???. and no one else is coming. Hence, we have issues that we likely can not address this year.
Probably not a ton better as a whole from last years team but we are incrementally better I think
You’re right, they don’t have to announce anything … because they are in the business of making money. That was my whole point.
All your points are valid. I don’t fool myself into thinking they’d actually say “we failed”. I’m just cynical. That’s all.
I’m just tired of spin that I can personally see through. That’s where my personal frustration comes from. I’ll still root for the team because I’m a fan …. whether I’ll spend money on tickets anymore … that’s another question.
Might as well bring Shawn Estes and Jeff D’Amico back. I hear Pedro Astacio is available too.
Jeff D’Amico had a nice curveball. D’Amico . . . Humber’s future? hmmm
I hope not.
Kyle Losche’s best year was back in 2002 when he went 13-8 with a 4.23 era. I dont think this is the move the Mets were planning on making when they announced the increase in ticket prices.
This is what its come down to….Kyle Lohse! Face it, no trades are going to get doneeveryone DOES NOT LIKE our so called ” prospects ” The free agency market is crap and this is what it’s come down to…
What about getting one of the Colons or Bensons even to replace Maine and use the low-cost Maine in a deal for Johan.
Maine has to be as valuable as Lester and Hughes to the Twins, no? With Gomez and Humber it could get done, Pelfrey a slam dunk. You keep one of Humber/pelfrey, you keep F-Mart and Mulvey, etc… and your rotation is Pedro, Johan, OP, FA, Pelfrey
Actually on a different thread….one of the posters said and I paraphrase….
“given the reality that our prospects stink, it would have been nice to bump the payroll and pay for AROD to play ss and then turn around and trade Reyes plus a little for Santana. We would have lost reyes but gained a dominant bat in the lineup and the best pitcher in the game all while keeping and having the chance to improve the prospects we have at the higher levels”
Come to think of it……that person was entirely right. AROD is all about the $$ and those set of moves while being completely bold would also have made the team the runaway favorites for the NL pennant and likely a team that could win the WS from Boston.
It would have been gutsy and expensive but it would have been a huge improvement on the team.
Now without having any real good shortstop move to make, we can not include Reyes in any deal for pitching and trading the entire farm for Santana still is no guarantee that they accept the deal
It’s going to be Livan Hernandez here….just get use to it. WTF!!!!
Oddly, a few years ago, the Mets let Traschel walk. Yet, it seems the Mets reserved to signing a comparible, if not inferior type of pitcher. Might as well let the kids pitch and reinforce other areas.
I think that need to be the plan at this point. Let the young guys pitch and see what happens. Boy, wouldn’t Brian Bannister be looking good in a Mets uniform right about now. Terrible trade.
Actually he would look kinda pudgy with mediocre stuff.
I agree, let pelfrey and humber grow….pelfrey has great stuff and hes going to be a very good pitcher one day…
Humber is a poor man’s Bobby Jones…He is not going to be anything, have you seen his stuff???? Please……
Yeah…we’ve seen the hammer curve that was called the “best curve in the minor leagues” and his mid-90’s fastball. What about it?
you’re kidding right??? Because if you are serious, I’m pulling the trigger on the Pepsi t-shirt launch gun now….
Its true…although I’m for letting the kids pitch, there’s nothing overtly impressive about them. Then again, look at Bannister now.
I would take Bobby Jones in the rotation right now.
It wasn’t that odd considering how he let the team down during the postseason and he was on the downside of his career.
True, yet he may still be a better option going forward. Last year, he would’ve been a decent stopgap. Surely better than Brian Lawrence, Aaron Sele, Chan Ho Park etc. Just my opinion.
Maybe, but I think he had too much baggage associated with him.
I mean this year, Glavine would be a far better stopgap than Livan, SIlva, Lohse, etc, but given his last performance, a lot of Mets fans would have been up in arms if he returned. Same with Kenny Rogers after ‘99.
Besides, Trachsel is unsigned right now for a reason.
I agree with the baggage. Although he won 15 games, his postseason failure did him in. Same goes for Glavine. But in both instances, the baggage was specific to their postseason performances.
I’m sure many people were sour on Glavine last year, being that it was publically known that his signing with the Mets was not his first choice.
Still in either year or instance, Loshe, Silva, Hernandez are Trachsel-Zambrano-esqe. Why sign consider signing them to lucrative long term deals??
BTW, I thought Trachsel signed with the Rockies…
Trachsel also had an ERA over 5 in his final year with the Mets. So those 15 wins were due more to the offensive support he got rather than his pitching ability. I’m not sure if he would have received the same run support from the 2007 team (in fact I doubt that he would have).
I would definitely not want the Mets to sign Loshe or Silva to anything more than a 2 year deal at most. I’d rather they take a flyer on Freddy Garcia, and/or Colon or Prior and see what happens. You have to figure that once El Duque goes on the DL in June, that will be about the time Garcia or Prior might be ready to step up.
Accordign to the MLB website, Trachsel has a dash next to his name where the team should be. So I’m assuming he’s still unsigned.
God please make it stop!!!!
This is the equivalent of trhowing cr*p at the wall to see what sticks. Unfortunately, this will leave a 4 year mark. I really don’t need this with my hangover.
So basically, we aren’t making any trades and we aren’t buying any of the free agents because they are too expensive. My season ticket seats better be lined with gold and have a g0dd@mn cushion on em because it is getting harder and harder to justify giving this miserable organization a penny. I can’t wait to see how much the concessions are going up to fleece the fans who actually want to eat or drink something at Shea’s last season.
matt wise= 5th starter
David West and Kevin Tappani….woops, I mean Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber….Please shoot me.
When Maine came to the Mets, he wasn’t projected as a starter, but rather a decent middle man. Yet, given the opportunity, he grown into a nice #3-4 starter. Why bother signing anyone from this free agent crop? The majority of the available pitchers are either mediocre at best or on the decline. Let the kids pitch, see what they have. They can’t be that much worse than Loshe, SIlva, etc.
Geez, both of them remind me of Victor Zambrano.
i still dont get why wilpon would be ok with giving 10-11 mill a year to a silva or lohse when he can give 20 or so to santana who is 10X the pitcher these guys are. its like if your going to buy a car and dont want to spend 100K on a benz and then you go to a kia dealer and offer the guy 50 grand for a sonata.
Has there been any article that said the major stumbling block on Santana was his projected contract?
Everything I’ve heard says it’s the Mets prospects (and who they’re are and aren’t willing to trade) that’s stopping the deal.
It’s Wilpon’s history. He’ll use our lack of quality prospects as an excuse that we couldn’t land Santana, while the main reason was that he didn’t want to pay the 150mil.
A story will leak by the Twins saying, “We were never offered anyone beyond Gomez, Pelfrey and Mulvey.”
just like every report on Arod in 00-01 was that he wanted billboards, offices, merchandise tents, and private jets, in reality wilpon was just too cheap. the only people who really know are wilpon and omar and why would omar leak it? unless he wants to get fired
+3 (for arod’s old number)
thanks for the examples.
btw Hit The Weights Zeile,
20-25 mil minus 10-11 mil = 9-15mil in Wilpon’s pocket.
youre right, its just so frustrating. i think my personal wish list right now is to trade for daniel cabrera and melvin mora as a salary dump. mora can be a RH util guy that can spell, church, castillo, wright or reyes. although going along with our posts, taking mora as a salary dump is probably out of the question since he wouldnt technically be a starter although with all the injury prone guys or LHers we have he’d prob end up playing 5 out of 7 days a week.
Tapani had a nice career…a couple of 16 win seasons and 19 wins in 1998. David West was a loser. Of that trade to the Twins, only Aguilera and Tapani amounted to anything. Viola on the other had was useful to the Mets.
Can someone tell me the last time the Mets “developed a number one or a number two pitcher in this town????
LOL…Perhaps Kazmir…and we know what happened there.
someone please shoot me with that dump pepsi t-shirt launch gun…
hahaha
+4
any truth to the rumor that The Tuna is being hired by Aurthur Blank to clean up the mess that is the Falcons?
When he’s done; can he come to the Mets?
That’s all the talk down here in Atlanta. He’s supposed to accept a job as VP today.
he knows how to fix things….except the Jets
The genius behind Parcells is in Foxboro
the cheater?

they all steal signs.
his video taping the coaches didn’t affect the games much, but his mens rea leaves a lot to be desired in the integrity department.
Belichek is still the greatest football mind.
Since we’re on a football note, and it kind of relates to baseball…..do you see the Pats season deserving of an “asterisk” if they go undefeated?
yea bellicheck was a great football mind when he was in cleveland. hes a good coach dont get me wrong but give him any QB other than brady or manning and lets see where he is.
Let me ask the more knowledgable posters;
When Santana signs with the Red Sox, HE HAS to sign an extension with them?
How do they know that?
What is tampering?
What if he gets traded to the Sox and then opts to seek Free Agency next year?
A scenario that would delight the Mets and their fans…
I’m assuming since the trade is contingent on a contract extention, there’s no tampering. Hence, I believe its one of the conditions of the trade.
Loshe = Lose
7 Yr, WL% .460
W = 63
L = 74
and he’s asking for 44 million? Imagine he was actually a good pitcher.
Somewhat unrelated, but who is our long guy out of the pen? Is Sosa going to fill that roll? You know, for the days where Ollie walks 7 batters in 2 innings and has to get yanked.
Blah Blah Blah , I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, every day ..wake up , go to work, do a ton of work, read Metsblog, feel dissappointed, worry about whats for dinner, cry myself to sleep because Omar cant get a decent arm in the rotation…sleep….lol
You know what’s going to happen, don’t you? We’re going to sign Lohse for 4 years, 40 mil and he’s going to suck. The Phillies will sign Kris Benson for 1 year, 2 mil and he’ll win 17 games.
I guess Sosa is the long guy now, although it could end up being Pelf/Humber (not likely) or the Register guy if he makes it.
Lohse? pass. Even Silva is better, and he stinks too.
They do need another SP now, so with the options bandied about, Colon on a 1 year deal + incentives (and maybe an optin) might be a solid move.
Prior too is almost a no brainer. Invest the money and hope you get lucky (just like Lotto!)
IMO, starting last years rotation but subbing Pedro for glavine isn’t that bad.
Pedro was money in Septermber, and if he holds together, gives us more than Glavine (and you have your ace).
Maine and Perez, if they follow normal career progression (based on their ages and past success) are good bets to be better. At least they are still on the upside of their careers.
Duque? WHo knows, but assume he is about the same, but how long will he last?
And Pelfrey, based on what he did in September, is likely to be better, maybe vastly, than to start last year.
So, at least while Pedro and Duque stay on the field, the rotation is fine. If they get another starter, letting Pelfrey go to AAA to work on his secondary stuff and control, maybe even better.
Pelf then is the first man called up. Humber #2. And any reclamation project (prior? Garcia?) is there to hopefully step in mid season.
Much better fall backs than Chan ho, Lawrence, etc.
Mid year rotation: Pedro, Maine, Perez, Prior, (Pelfrey/Duque/Colon/etc.)
Not as bad as some people would like to believe, and better than the Phils and Braves probably too.
Benson, Colon, one of those guys for 1 year just to hold down the fort.
And prior as the reclamation project.
its so sad we’re offering 4 years to lohshe. i shouldnt laugh but oh my god.
I doubt the story is true….just some yahoo garbage, by the way thanks 4 the add Tina. :O)
aww no problem! i just left you a comment thanking you too hehe =)
If we’re going to take a monetary and years risk on a #4/5 scrub, why are we going with this bozo instead of Silva who would at least be somewhat reliable?
Maybe this will work in our favor for once. Just hold out and end up with the one left out with no market, like Sosa was last year. With Jennings, Colon, Prior, Loshe, Silva, etc. someone will have to be left out. They all have risk. Might as well gamble that one will be left.
I really have to laugh when the media says that Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson are a better package…
Lester has good potential, although there are still questions about health & stamina
Crisp is really no better than Endy Chavez a good 4th CF
Lowrie, as scouts have said is a defensive liability with “hard hands” (sounds a bit like Gotay)
Masterson is a AA potential….
So it sounds more like that Bosox media is doing a better job “playing up” their potential than our media is in “trashing our prospects…
Lester would start in our rotation next year and would prob. be the #4.
As would Heilman if switched back to a SP…
Not for us he would not. At least not right now. He is seen as a commodity in the BP. I personally think we should use him as a trading chip and pump up his versatility. There is no doubt in my mind he will not resign with us so might as well get something while the value is high.
From hotfoot.com: John Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the Mariners are close to a four-year, $44 million deal with free agent Carlos Silva. Hickey believes the Mariners are likely to introduce their newest acquisition as early as tomorrow.
Great, Silva and Lohse are off the market.. leaving us with Livan, Colon, and whatever other spare part is laying around the recycle bin. I wish they would just end it this offseason already and just hand us the bronze medal. They should rename this team “the Bridesmaids”.
Lohse is still a RHP not a LHP… which is great next to his photo of him throwing righty… sorry Matt, it’s been bothering me
