eMailbag: Where will the Mets Draft in June
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 19, 2007 1:35 pm

Pete from Long Island sent in an e-mail asking…

“Do the Mets get a draft pick for losing Paul Lo Duca? Also, as of now, where will the Mets be drafting?”

…as of now, thanks to compensatory picks from the Braves and Tom Glavine, the Mets will have the 18th, 22nd, and 33rd picks during the first and supplemental-first rounds of next june’s draft

The Mets do not get a draft pick for losing Lo Duca.

…by the way, i anticipate a lull in content over the next few weeks, so, if you have a question, feel free to send it in using my e-mail address or the Contact MetsBlog.com box featured in this site’s sidebar…i will try to post as many questions and answers as i can…lastly, if i cannot answer the question, i will do my best to find someone who can

This is an important thing to remember when discussing trading our prospects for a Number 1 starter…

We will likely be getting a few players and have to pay above the slot for them… Worked for the Yankees and Red Sox…

    • bhill410 says:

the 33rd pick is the first overall of the supplimental round, does this mean that glavine is the highest rated free agent out there using that wierd power formula? I would have thought that a number of people would have been rated better. Either way 3 draft picks in the top 33 combined with an insane amount of international signings actually gives me hope that this franchise is using some of its finacial might for a change. I mean for christ sake we are the second most valuable franchise in baseball.

I always have a hard time coming down from the winter meetings. During those few days, I got used to refreshing Metsblog every 2 or 3 minutes expecting to see a new post or to read the new comments added.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to stop. I still refresh the site every 10 minutes or so expecting something new.

    Perhaps I just want a starting pitcher…

  3. supermannino says:

This site has ruined “office productivity.”

  4. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

does anyone know of any sites where you can do research on up coming drafts. is it too early for the preseason all american team for the ncaa?

  5. hahaha oh my god can we draft good players please?

  6. MetFanInVegas says:

according to Jon Heyman he says the Yankees will get Santana by Hank Steinbrenner overuling Cashman again, who doesn’t want to give up Hughes and wants to save the money, and the Yanks will get him with a package including Hughes, Cabrera, Jeff Marquez, and another pitching prospect..he did note not to count the Red Sox or Mets out of it while the Red Sox are waiting for a team to bend n give them wat they want

    • wnymetsfan says:

Hank should talk to his dad about how much say he should have in player related actions. George never did win with the Yanks until he learned to keep his nose out of the business of the guy who is paid to make the player decisions. They tend to know more than you do. Cashman is being smart he knows that Hughes is pretty good and in a year or two could be a nice one two with Wang but Hank is impatient and wants to go for it all. Problem is that Santana does not put them past the Red Sox as they still would have just as much offense but more pitching.

    • Achilles400 says:

So, according to Heyman, the Yankees will get Santana, unless the Red Sox or Mets get him. Now THAT’S investigative reproting!

  7. supermannino says:

I think our team is good enough to make it to the World Series this year. We just need better poise. More consistency. And a lot of luck in avoiding injuries. I would love to see Pelfrey develop into a reliable 4/5 guy. If that were to happen, we’d be looking fine right now. I guess that’s why I’m not hitting the panic button.

All that being said, Santana would be really nice; but I am going to accept reality here. We just don’t have the prospects to make this happen. The Sox and Spanks do.

    • wnymetsfan says:

I also would love Santana but remember guys we were one game from the WS in 2006 with a staff of El Duque, Maine, Trachs, Glavine and Perez pre-NLCS game 7/anybody breathing. In 2007 we were a game from the playoffs with Duque, Glavine, improving Maine, improving Perez and any combination of retread/Pelfrey until September when Pedro returned. Right now we have Maine, Perez, Duque and Pedro. A solid 4 starters and need to either sign a FA for the 5th spot or go with the guy who wins it from Humber/Pelfrey in ST. Duque has had injury issues but the guy is battler and will give us everything he has and than some. Pedro looked good in September. He is not his oldself but remember the last 5 years or he was still above average and that was with god knows what going on in his right shoulder. All mended I have confidence he can be a reliable starter. The keys without Santana are Maine and Perez. Two guys who won 15 games and a little help from the pen and offense could have been 17 to 20 game winners with sub 4 era which usually would get you talked about as a 1 or 2. Especially Perez because when on he can be flat out nasty.

      • supermannino says:

Positive. Let’s keep it positive! I just feel like we’re all going to get really depressed with this Johan-or-death approach. Is it completely unrealistic to believe that Pelfrey and Humber are going to improve? That being said, I do think the Mets should sure up their chances by signing a 5th starter (ie, Lohse, Silva, Hernandez). I just want to know that there is SOMEONE available if and when someone goes down. I don’t want to have to resort to a Vargas, Lawrence, or Humber in September (that NEVER should have happened…he shouldn’t have been placed in that situation, and his performance isn’t indicative of what kind of pitcher he’s going to be). The truth is that we got lucky with Sosa for awhile last year (and maybe why we didn’t pursue other starting pitching with such urgency), but we need to have that one extra guy in our stable…

        • stickguy says:

I’m positive. Yeah, Johan would benice, but I’m with wny up above. The rotation is much better shape then people seem to think, and better than what we started last year with.

I posted on the Lohse thread that Pedro is better than Glavine, maine and Perez hit the wall, but that isn’t too uncommon for their age/service, and are primed (and the right age) to be better this year.

Duque is still Duque, and Pelfrey in Sept. was way better than the April version.

Key is having better back ups for injury replacement (Pedro and Duque you need to be prepared!).

If they get a decent #5 (even Silva, not Lohse) Pelf can start at AAA with Humber. Then he comes up 1st when someone goes down.

Sign a rehab guy (prior preferably) to step in mid year if needed, and best case, he pushes duque or pelf to the pen if they are healthy and productive.

Even Colon on a 1 year deal.

I don’t mind Duque and Pelfrey to start, but would feel better with Duque/new guy, with Pelfrey as #6 starter.

Just please, no park/lawrence/lima time this year!

Pedro (if sept. carries over), Maine, Perez are a very strong top 3, Duque (is the foot surgery worked!) is above average for a #4. And that top 4 is competitive with almost every team in the NL.

If the new guy or Pelfrey has a solid year as #5, they are good to go.

Prior pitching like 2003 with his new shoulder would put them over the top.

        • supermannino says:

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Why is this so hard for everyone else to understand?

        • zen says:

it’s hard to understand b/c people watched the team during the last two months of last season. i was positive all year only to see the pitching fall apart at the end.

signing a bunch of risks is not smart coming off of last year’s collapse. colon, prior, lohse are far from being a sure thing or even a likely thing.

the bullpen is better just for getting rid of sele and mota, but it hasn’t been improved much beyond that.

bottomline: the mets have not added a good (not expecting great) starter or reliever to this team and likely won’t. the line-up is good, but not better than the phils or braves.

the mets are one of 10 nl teams with an equal shot at winning the nl. not bad, but far from the feeling during the 2006 season.

      • dcmetsfan says:

He is not his oldself but remember the last 5 years or he was still above average

I’d go further and say he’s been even better than merely above average. Even with arm troubles he’s still put together seasons that would be in the top ten in baseball. I mean, the guy lost about 5 miles an hour on his fastball when he came back last year and he was still striking out over a batter per inning. If Pedro gives us 200 innings next year – a 50/50 propisition I admit – there’s your ace.

I’d love to get Santana, but I’m with you guys. The pitching should be fine next year, but I would feel better if we managed to land Santana.

  8. supermannino says:

I also think that our lineup has IMPROVED!

    1B Delgado…he can’t be worse…
2B Castillo all year. Consistency in the two hole.
3B Wright…maybe he shows more consistency than he did last spring. He’s not going to get worse.
SS Reyes…if he paces himself, he could have less steals but more impact.
RF Church vs Green. I’m taking Church. Gimme 40 doubles. That would be nice.
    CF Beltran will be Beltran.
LF Alou. OK…he might go down again, but I like our backup outfielders. We can’t have mass carnage in the outfield like we did last year.
C Schneider vs LoDuca. First of all, you have to love the leftie/rightie platoon potential. Second of all, off the juice, Paulie just hit a bunch of dribblers. I’ll take a push at offense if it means an increase in defense.

The bench should be more stable if Easley stays healthy, we have Anderson all year, Chavez is healthy…you get the idea. We’re better than last year.

You’re going to have to convince me that the Mets aren’t going to be fine.

We’ve already made a couple of moves to sure up our bullpen.

So…let’s not forget that the Mets are still the Alpha Male in the NL. Last year was an aberration! Stay positive!

    • tfc3rid says:

Disagree that we are the ‘alpha male’ in the NL… Arizona, who won the West last year and has Brandon Webb recently added Dan Haren, who we had wanted because the was a real number 1… That would make two number 1 starters on the D’Backs… I kind of think that makes them a favorite to win the NL… In addition, they made the postseason last year, what did we do?

      • supermannino says:

We didn’t do anything great last year or this offseason. It’s what we’re going to do this season that matters. I agree that the D’Backs have a formidable tandem, but that’s not everything.

        • recoton1 says:

The Mets, last year, had an exceptional April and May. After that, they were a sub- .500 team that couldn’t win when they needed to most. The reason is that they were reliant on old, broken down parts. This team is the same team that could not win down the stretch. Why do you think that they are contenders? Our rotation is a C+ at best, and that is assuming a healthy Pedro and El Duque. Maine was great at the start and then faded fast. Save for the day before THE END. I do not trust this rotation as constructed for the season. As for the hitting, 4/9 of our line-up is Schnieder/Church/Pitcher/Delgado. Reyes, while a valuable piece of the puzzle, disappeared last season. That leaves Castillo (who can’t run), Beltran, Alou, and Wright to produce on this team. Beltran, as good of a glove as he is, is a .270 batter with 30HR potential. Wright is also a great 30/30 guy, but we are facings Utley/Howard/Rollins. I would say, as constructed that our line-up is a B. This doesn’t sound like a team “built to win it all now”. In fact, it looks like a team that is happy to contend and come up short.. again. Well, at least they didn’t raise our ticket prices while they “rebuild”.. oh wait.

        • metfanoutwest says:

Now that D’backs have Haren, and if Bedard, Blanton both come to NL, we will need Santana just to contend. Keeping status quo while other NL teams become stronger is not the way to go into 2008. (btw, with all those good pitchers leaving AL, offense stats will soar!)

  9. Kalihan42 says:

Lull in content? I sure hope it is not any more of a lull then its been. I have heard the same back and forth regurgitated Santana rumor for the past 3 weeks….I hope SOMETHING happens in the next couple of weeks. Then we won’t all be taling about the Wise signing like it is the move of the year

    • stickguy says:

It’s called the off season for a reason you know!

      • Kalihan42 says:

Funny thing is, I am on this blog during the off season only for the most part…during the regular season I just watch the games. I usually start checking in again around the trade deadline.

  10. supermannino says:

Are there Winter Ball box scores that we can scrutinize? That would give us something to do…

  11. gomets2008 says:

Everyone go and vote in the link on the post above this one for sports blog of the year….Metsblog is getting woooped on …I know we deserve some kind of award for the pain and suffering, besides some of us so funny in here…we should be writers for a Mets fan sitcom…ohh and whatever that site it, just made it into my new faves….wow….super hott broads and booze and sports….so loong Mets blog…lol ..jk jk

  12. Peter says:
