In his recent Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark writes that Mets OF Fernando Martinez has more upside than Red Sox OF
Jacoby Ellsbury, according to an ‘AL front-office man,’ and so the Mets can certainly put together a package that would be ‘attractive to the Twins.’
…i have lost the links, but i had checked in with a few Twins blogs to see their side of this discussion, and i recall reading how most of them were quite fond of the Mets prospects – it didn’t read as though they preferred any one package to another, be it from the Mets, Yankees or Red Sox…
Stark quotes another AL Executive, who still believes Santana will eventually end up on the Yankees, as saying…
“The Twins are doing the right thing, waiting for the right deal. But the Red Sox don’t need to panic. They don’t need him. There’s no reason for them to get anxious. But the Yankees actually do need him. They’re just trying to convince themselves they don’t.”
…stark alludes to it, but the sense i get is that it’s not so much that the Yankees refuse to include both hughes and Ian Kennedy in the same deal, it’s that the Yankees refuse to trade hughes…period…

Ugh…
Hey, Johan santana is available?
Why didn’t anyone tell me about this before? I’m surprised it hasn’t leaked out!
“Jayson Stark writes that Mets OF Fernando Martinez has more upside than Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury.”
Can he also confirm that Mike Pelfrey throws right-handed?

And i have a big pen1s

Oh, the big difference between martinez and Ellisbury is time. Eliisbury could realistically be pencilled in to start for the team in 2008, but martinez has to be considered at least 2 years away from regular duty. 2009 might be a stretch.
They like our prospects. No one likes them. Heyman likes them. Heyman hates everyone but Reyes. No one likes them. The prospects are good. The prospects are nothing. Reyes or bust. Our prospects are attractive. Omar is asleep. Omar is alive! Reyes or bust. The Mets have no prospects the Twins want. Gomez and Elssbury are comparable. Martinez and Ellsbury are comparable. The Mets have no prospects. The Twins like our prospects.
Am I caught up?
rinse and repeat
No quite, Martinez has more upside than Ellisbury. Done!
Great post, and entirely accurate!
Beane loves Milledge. Beane’s love for Milledge is overblown. Mets don’t have what it takes to get Bedard. Mets are close on Bedard. Mets not close on Bedard. Mets interested in Livan. Mets not interested in Livan.
Add, the FAN is not reporting that the Mets have acquired a certain big pitcher from the Twins.
Again, they are NOT reporting that.
Reports here on Metsblog have been very helpful. They have been inaccurate. They refer to analyst’s prognoses. They are spot-on. They only report rumors. Substantiated only. Unconfirmed.
I think I finally lost interest in this board.
That last “WFAN rumor” post was the last straw.
the mets may or may not be unnterested in the possibility of not getting santana, but are uninterested in the impossibility of getting Bedard no time soon or in the future.
lol
and according to stark, gomez is suddenly a HOT prospect
points guy should have given you +10 on this one!
Yeah, I was wondering where Mr. Points was on this one??
I gotta be honest, I didn’t feel anything with that one. sorry to disappoint fellas.
Points guy is relevant. Points guy is funny. Points guy is irrelevant. Points guy is unfunny. Points guy is old. Points guy split his pants.
Caught up and left everyone in your dust! Great post!
First of all, if you ask me, the package that the Sox are offering really isnt that good. Ellsbury hasnt done anything yet to be considered so highly. Secondly if i was the Twins and going to trade with Yanks, it would be for Joba and Hughes. I dont know anymore, i want this Santana ordeal over with alrady so we can move on – i owuld love him on the Mets but cmonnnnnnnn already do something
Agreed and I’ve been saying this from the beginning. The Red Sox and Yankees refuse to include more than one big name in any deal. These offers are not that much better than what the Mets are willing to offer. Go read any Twins blog and all of the fans seem to favor a deal with the Mets. The Twins fans are much higher on our guys than we are.
thats bc the new york media wrecks these guys and its really not fair…im not saying theyre great but theyre definitely better than theyre given credit for…id take anyone of these guys over coco crisp i mean come on…and while melky is a decent player…thats all he really is to me…the only guy ive heard being offered who i think is legitimately better than they prospects we have is hughes…and thats assuming that ellsbury and bucholz are not being offered
It all feeds into the Yanks media frenzy. Yankee fans never heard of some of the Mets prospects and they brush them off and say, “oh our guy in a-ball is better than him” or “who is that guy?”.
Yanks fans and the media assume that Melky, Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy are great players already. Give me a break. Melky is a lighter hitting version of Milledge (with a better attitude), Joba is nasty, Hughes has proven nothing other than he’s injury prone, and Kennedy is good, but rate him higher than Pelfrey? I’ve seen both throw. Pelfrey is better.
melky blows. in a twins lineup he might hit .260
So many things contradicting themselves.
It’s so fun to listen to and read, but I’m getting tired of it.
I just want freakin’ Johan Santana.
All I’m gonna say is, the Twins can take
1 of Gomez/Martinez
3 prospect pitchers not including Mr. Deolis Guerra
and Aaron Heilman
If it costs any more, I’m out, if it costs less, great.
I’m at the point where I would say lets just make the offer :
Gomez,Fmart,Humber,Mulvey,Vineyard and Gotay….we can always sign an outfielder besides we would still have Pelf and Guerra….I know its a lot , but its Johan….if we offered that and they did not say yes immediately, end of discussions….plan D (for doughnuts) Blanton,Wells,Colon,Livan.
Oh hum.
No matter if he’s with us or another team, I really can’t wait to see F-Mart actually play. lol.
Same here – ive been saying it for a lil bit now. Everyone likes this kid and we’ve heard so much about him that i would definitely like to see him play. I liked Gomez when he first came up to, just didnt think his bat is ready for the big leagues. I love his defense though and that speed is incredible. I really wish we had pitching prospects along the lines of those guys too
Sid Fynch – 115 MPH fast ball and a snow boot
get 3 more of him and maybe you have a shot at Johan.
Well I heard from a reliable sources girl freinds, dentist that he was going to the Marlins in return the TWINS get the entire Marlins team, 3 – Hot dog vendors, a peanut vendor and the Mining rights to the ground under the now useless Orange Bowl.
Matt PLEASE stop this insanity. Oh by the way the twins also get the excluvive rights to the Marlins name. Johan will just wear a blank white T- shirt. This is getting rediculous!
Yankees will regret trading Hughes. I’ve seen him pitch a few times in the minor and showed great, great potential. If the Twins land Hughes, it will pay off for them in the long run.
I’ve seen Hughes pitch. Not impressed. Solid 3.
Solid 3? How about his no hitter that he through until he pulled his hammy? Or how about the 4 scoreless innings he pitched in relief of Roger in the ALDS this year keeping the Yanks alive for one more game? I’d say him and Joba at the top of a rotation is pretty nice. I’d love to have both or either of them.
Time will tell. He can be a #2, maybe. I said 3 to be safe. So let me amend that.
My predictions so far:
Milledge will stink, Carl Everett-lite.
Hughes #2.75 pitcher at best.
come on, bob moose once pitched a no hitter. hughes pitched half of one. geez, dennis ribant went deep into a game once. hughes is one of those guys who needs pinpoint control. he was throwing 91 at years end with less than 100 innings under his belt. If he picks up his velocity and maintains it, maybe he will be a star. santana already is, and a young one to boot
You know, Hughes has been compared to Roger Clemens with the movement and speed of his pitches. Then again, Clemens is a dopefiend [steroids in this case] so who really knows until he is well into his career. Didn’t Humber almost have a no hitter in the minors? Granted that is the minors but people are saying he may be a reliever at best. Only time can truly tell.
If you ask me, i think Hughes’ repertoire reminds me alot of Prior when he first came up(before getting hurt). this kid is going to be legit and i dont think i would trade him.
I don’t think Hughes has the fastball that Prior had, but I really like Hughes. Think he will be very good. Tough to tell with a young pitcher though. They could hit a wall or just come up with arm problems.
I saw Hughes pitch also and he makes this face like he is about to take a dump every time he winds up.. it is priceless.. the Twins will make billions just from the endorsements from Charmin.
Yankees would be stupid to trade Hughes and/or Kennedy (I don’t know if the Twins are demanding both or just one). These two should probably be in the Yanks rotation next year with Pettitee, Mussina, and Wang. Maybe they can add another good starter but they really don’t need Johan as much as we do.
Hopefully, Pettitte will have to serve a suspension for shoving needles into his a$s.
If so, could he sue MLB for discrimination based on sexual orientation?
Too bad sodomy isn’t illegal in NY…
+2
for each time petite claims to have used hgh
Clemens apparently likes to collect artifacts from his playing days. He has a chunk of Piazza’s bat hanging above his mantle. He has a little bottle of ‘roids and a bottle of hgh.
Rog, if you’re out there, you better use it before the expiration date.
If I am trading the best pitcher is naseball to the Yankees in my very own AL, they better pay for it. I may face them down the line in a playoff and live to regret it. Since when is a pitcher of this quality not worth two prospects?
How about this for a theory?
The Twins are probably awaiting FDA approval on human cloning so they can clone Santana before trading him, thus ending up with Santana, F-Mart, Humber, Pelfrey, Gomez, Heilman, Guerra, and Mulvey all on the same team. Boy, if that happens, the Mets will really look like fools, when they could have just cloned Matt Wise or something.
Thought of the day: What if Reyes was a catcher?
he’d only play 125 games and have a shorter career?
Yea but consider this. He could eventually eclipse Biggio’s record of All Stars and Gold Gloves at 4 positions. Biggio was never a Shortstop.
A few other things. Reyes is so fast, he could probably frame pitches really well. You could also sell so many tickets based on the fact that you’ll be able to see him run (er, walk) to first base to back up the play on an infield grounder. Would be marketing genius!!!
or you can just trade the farm for Santana!
I would trade anyone in the farm system, withholding one of the Gomez/Fmart combo. We will eventually need one of them to step into an outfield spot, so send the one the Twinkies like the most to Minn with Pelfrey, Mulvey, Humber, Heilman and Joe Smith. I think that should be enough for the Twins because getting Heilman and Smith would free them up to trade Joe Nathan for possibly another OF prospect or SP. 6 prospects for a frontline ace is the going rate and those guys whould get enough respect to get the Deal done. I mean Twins get a ton of cheap contracts and good prospects, Mets pony up the dough and get the Ace that they need to be a real threat.
Heilman isn’t a prospect. He is a proven, veteran major leaguer. And those are worth more than prospects that haven’t proven they can produce in the majors.
And, with pitching being harder to find than a Wii, the Mets are supposed to trade 5 of them to Minn for 1 back?
+4 for Heilmann
The Yankees needs an Ace to compete with Redsox Ace Josh Beckett and matchup with them… The Mets already have Pedro . The Yankees doesn’t even have an Ace. Did you guys watch Wang’s perfomance last year in playoffs against Cleveland?
The Yankees payroll will be coming off books 80+ million next year so Yankees can afford Johan….
I think the Yanks may as well get him and make their payroll $270Mil. Heck, why don’t we go back to the days where there were 4 teams in the league?
The Yankees and Red Sox aren’t even competing with Tampa, Baltimore, Toronto (who AL East fans try to spin off as a contender). They are competing with each other and Detroit (recently). Mets have payroll too, but it’s more in line with the every other top spending team. Bottom line is the Yanks and the Sox are ruining the game. You wonder why people don’t go to games in Kansas City anymore? Would you go see those players year after year when they either suck or are good and will be traded?
1 caveat though, Pedro is no longer a #1. I love him, but that’s asking too much from him. He’s a solid #2 if healthy, but he’s no ace anymore.
Pedro an ace? Not anymore my friend…
Does anyone know who reprted that WFAN announced the Mets got Santana???
i dont know but whoever it is totally lied!
ive been listening for a little while now and they’re talking nothing but old time football.
i had to turn on stephen a’s show…
trust me if they mentioned anything about santana-clause i would be screaming.
I think they would bring back the Stars on Stars show hosted by Stephon Marbury. I think an interesting interview would be with Anuch and/or the intern. I would pay top dollar to see that. I’m sure advertising space would be at a premium.
+3
I smell pay-per-view.
hahaha oh my god i actually saw that show once on comcast sports net.
Starbury is love.
I think at the end of each show, there should be a bonus round, where he picks out a lucky young lady from the crowd and asks:
“Are you gonna get in the truck?”
If she has a placard under her seat, she has no choice. If there is no card, she has an option to either go in the truck or go to a Knicks game. Torture no matter how you cut it. I should be a producer.
Gonna have to disagree, the show’s going to end with Marbury ranting:
“You have to watch me,”
“I’ve got so much (stuff) on you and you know it. You think you can (get) me. But I’ll (get) you first. You have no idea what I know.”
LOL! You guys are hilarious.
Bring back Starbury’s show!
reported.
Sorry!
BTW I know this has nothing to do with the subject but people being down on Matt Wise and continuosly bringing up the one game where he pitched close to 13 straight balls against the Mets need to cut it like an embilical cord.. A guy cant be judged on one bad outting, especially a relief pitcher. If thats the case, Glavine should always be remembered for his last outting in Met pinstripes..
I like that you said Met pinstripes. Down with the snow white jerseys. They are fugly.
where’s toomanyuniforms?
You’re nuts. Pinstripes are lame.
,,,
Come on Twins take a chance on f-mart in a package!
The jerseys could be worse.. Anyone remember the Mid 80’s Road Met jerseys? Who’s the genius who came up with that idea…
anyone remember our loveable Mercury Mets?
Not sure why Matt isn’t reporting this:
from hotfootblog.com:
John Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the Mariners are close to a four-year, $44 million deal with free agent Carlos Silva. Hickey believes the Mariners are likely to introduce their newest acquisition as early as tomorrow.
Great.. so another possible piece falls off the market. They should just rename this team “The Bridesmaids”. I can’t wait to watch this miserable organization win the Bronze Medal next year. The 2009 Mets slogan: “Come see slightly above average baseball while spending a small fortune at our new stadium.” or “The 2009 Mets.. just you wait until 2011″
I’m done.
Why because we did not sign Silva? Stop the presses: recolon1 thinks that the Mets are doomed for third place because the immortal Carlos Silva has signed with Seattle. Why don’t you go watch a truly miserable organization in the Bronx if you feel that way.
dayam
talk about a verbal beatdown. leave him be.
I am sick of the whining. We all feel the same angst. If all Mets fans beat down ourselves what would the NY media be good for?
reporting false rumors, of course
Of course.. I missed the whole WFAN rumor… damn work.. I only saw the correction post.
You see.. “vinnie”, in the real world here.. when pieces that appear the be your entire offseason strategy “Lohse, Silva, Haren, etc..” fall off the table, every other piece remaining becomes more valuable. So, Omar now has even greater pressure to overpay for one of the remaining pieces to help justify the 20% ticket price increase. Ahh.. what do you care. I’m sure that you don’t ever leave NJ to watch the Mets at shea anyway.
Toolbag, I live in SI and BK. So going to my usual 10-20 games a year is not a problem.
Omar has said time and time again that moves don’t NECESSARILY have to be made in the off-season. They can be made during the year. I happen to agree with him. Overpaying for Lohse, Silva or who ever else is not always the answer.
OH NO! The Mets’ didn’t get Carlos Silva! What a sad day for the fans of the New York Metropolitans.
A lot of people are saying a lot of things. Santanan will NOT be a Yankee!!!!!!
I don’t know if anyone put the link down, so here it is.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3161000
wow
first 4 paragraphs sounds like Omar to me.
Santana will not be Met until Mets include Jose Reyes in a deal…. Sorry guys
Thanks for the info Ron Gardenhire.. very clever handle Ron.. I would never have guessed that was you.
I hope Mets just sign Freddy Garcia, Livan Hernandez, and Mike Prior…. Spend the money next year…
Freddy Garcia won’t help us to mid season. I would rather sign Lohse than Livan if that tells you anything. and I have no idea who Mike Prior is… Maybe he is worth taking a look at.. Mark Prior might not be a bad idea but it is rumored by our very dependable reporters that he prefers SD.
