News: Tigers, Willis Agree on Extension
By Mike Nichols - Dec 20, 2007 5:04 pm

According to multiple reports, the Tigers and recently-acquired LHP Dontrelle Willis have agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract extension, which will lock up the 25-year-old pitcher through 2010.

…good, at least we won’t have to read about rumors involving him and the Mets for another three years…

Say, that Dombrowski is really a mover and a shaker.
    Must be nice….

  2. Nate W. says:

at that deal I would have loved to have traded for him, thats a steal for a decent #3 starter or a poor #2 starter.
Too bad it would have cost too much in prospects.

  3. Gaspar says:

Man, he’s been going downhill in the NL and moves to the AL and gets an extension? It’s a good deal if he can regain his old form, but that’s a big if.

  4. Lightweis says:

Back to Blanton for a minute, here are his splits:

    Home 7-5 2.69 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, .227 BAA
    Away 7-5 5.11 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .304 BAA

I was on board getting him for the package mentioned previously until I saw this.

Yes we do not want any distractions from our endless speculation this winter about Johan Santana.

What is Detroit’s payroll for 2008?

    • Nate W. says:

first off, Michael Ilitch bought the Tigers for $82M in 1992.

in 2007 thier payroll was 95 mil

now they’re at ~120 mil with Cabrera due for (10 mil plus) arbitration, so I would guess they’ll end up around 135 mil.

Its a little odd to think of the Tigers as a big market team when they had payrolls under 50 mil 3 times in the last 7 years.

I’m guessing it’ll be Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Dodgers and Mets as the top 5.

why would detroit not wait to see how willis performed in the AL before giving him an extension? stupidity…

    • DrownTown says:

To answer your rhetorical question with the utmost brevity: because if he pitches well, they would’ve had to pay him a lot more

      • gowrightgo says:

Or because with a deal like this already in place…he may be more marketable now to teams interesting in dealing for him. He is certainly better than Silva and Lohse who are both now going to be more expensive than Willis.

Mark my words…Dontrelle is Yankee before the end of this offseason

This is a piece from a yahoo article today……

Schneider is considered one of baseball’s best defensive catchers and was given a lot of credit this season for holding together a ragtag Nationals rotation.

“I think I’m pretty good with handling pitchers and trying to protect them,” Schneider said. “Defense for a catcher, I think sometimes people don’t know how important that is.”

Schneider has already spoken with Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson and met Wednesday with general manager Omar Minaya.

“They have a good mix here of experience and promising young guys. I’m going to get tape of all the starters so I can get something on paper, especially on guys we’ll facing in our division.”

Schneider saw at least one big upside to the trade, even though New York failed to make the postseason after blowing a seven-game lead with 17 games remaining.

“We did some winning (in Washington) but this is a different caliber of winning over here. It’s a chance to go to the playoffs every year,” Schneider said. “I have never been to the playoffs and I’m excited to have a chance to do it.”

    And there’s a practical reason:

“At least I won’t have to worry about trying to throw out (Jose) Reyes,” he said. “Really it’s two or three guys. David (Wright) had a lot of success in situations running in the right counts last year, and then there’s (Carlos) Beltran

He is growing on me already. I like that he is looking at tape right now of our guys and what they do and of the competition. He seems like he takes the game calling end of this very seriously. If he can make Mike Pelfrey into a decent #5 starter…..he will be worth 5 Lasting Milledges

      Sounds good to me.

    • jamie says:

ok…beginning to maybe be ok about this trade, possibly.

    • FBones24 says:

I’m starting to like this guy….. Sounds like the kind of guy this team needs.

While Brian is looking at tape, getting to know the Mets’ pitching staff, Paulie is looking at the retainer agreement he is working on with his lawyer.

    • kendychavez says:

check mets.com, his wife is smokin hot.

so chicks dig the long ball, old starting pitchers, middle relievers and now we find chicks dig defensive-minded catchers that can’t hit at all.

between you guys and i, i think they might just dig pro-ball player money.

I just want to make one point, then I’ll leave. What is everyone’s obsession with batting average? It’s a pretty overrated stat unless you’re the type of hitter who consistently it putting up .300+ seasons, then it tells you something. Our catcher, whoever it is, is our #8 hitter, we want him to clear the pitchers spot, want to take walk, that sort of thing. Schneider does that. What catchers out there are actually offensive forces beyond Victor Martinez, Joe Mauer, Russel Martin, and an aging Jorge Posada? Even Brian McCann, who albeit is a good hitter, didn’t post a higher OBP than Schneider last year. That’s 5 guys who are good hitters who are catchers. They’re rare. Frankly, having a guy who can get on base at .100 points higher than his batting avg., I think, is a lot better than a guy who *might* hit .285 and get on base at the same clip (and ground into numerous double plays). I think a lot of you will be pleasantly surprised with the way Schneider (and not to mention Church) work out for us. That is all.

These SP contracts make me wonder how much guys like Ollie and Maine are going to command if we ever let them get out in the open market

    • darkstar73 says:

I see us locking up Maine before that happens, if he has a few good months to start off, Omar will do it, he’s shown he’s not afraid to with Wright and Reyes. As for Ollie, that might be more difficult, but I just checked on Cot’s baseball contracts webpage, and apparently his agent is some guy who works for Boras, but either way, if Boras is involved, its hard to tell what will happen. I”d like to extend him though.

  11. kinjo1982 says:

I bet Wills would be good at Shea. A good Pitchers Park.

But he will get shelled in the AL.

I am talking a 7 era and a demotion to the bullpen.

    mark my words.

  15. 3 year lock up? Yeah, I’m just a bit jealous. At least he won’t have those numbers at Shea. He killed us at home. Didn’t he hit homeruns and grand slams there too? Geez.

Hope he has a better year in the AL.

I realize now why I keep coming back to this site. We’ve been conditioned ever since the days of Steve Phillips, Dan Duquette and Al Harazin to expect our consolation prize for the holidays. Hey, we’re not building a winner but here’s your off season hope; (fill in Vince Coleman, Mo Vaughn, George Foster, etc.)

Anyhow, I’m okay with no gift. More than that, I don’t want a consolation prize.

Just build a franchise and stop capitulating to the tabloids!
