Quote: Still a Chance Yankees get Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 20, 2007 9:18 am

Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner, talking about Twins LHP Johan Santana, as quoted by Newsday

“There’s still an outside chance that we get him.  We’ll see…I think myself and Brian are going back and forth.  I think we’re comfortable staying where we are, and I certainly think we’d be comfortable getting Santana, too…The decision is my decision.”

…every time i read a public statement from hank, i swear i hear Brian Cashman rolling his eyes…seriously, this has to drive cashman crazy

By the way, after talking with ‘several people,’ La Velle E. Neal III at his blog for the Star-Tribune writes that nothing is close regarding a trade of Santana.

In fact, he explains, ‘One person told me that nothing has happened since the end of the winter meetings.’

…as i wrote yesterday, i have talked to some people who believe that the Mets and Twins have not talked in weeks, while others believe they have…my sense is that things are quiet, though this may have more to do with family issues involving team officials and agents than it does with a break-down in talks…

Boy, this is going to go on all winter huh?

Any chance the Tigers will flip Dontrelle?

  2. napes22 says:

Honestly, what’s the point of Cashman even being there if Hank is going to do what he wants anyway.

    One question:

How does La Velle E. Neal III know whether anything is close or not, or whether conversations are taking place? Has he bugged the phones in Minnesota’s front office, or are his assumptions and speculations to be taken as fact?

I’m so tired of these reporters who make news out of the fact that there phone hasn’t rung.

is it possible that perhaps a 3-way trade could be worked out between the Mets, Boston and Minny? Something with Boston pairing up some of the lesser prospects they discussed with the Twins and the more elite prospects we’ve got, to bring Santana to NY….Not exactly sure what Boston would want out of it–they are stacked..

Not that I have heard anything along these lines, but I was just recalling how a few years ago the Yanks helped facilitate a trade between Montreal and Chicago, with Bartolo Colon going to the White Sox…The Yankers only did it to keep Boston from getting Colon

This is getting rediculous. How do the Yankees continue to get away with this crap? I mean we so far they said the refuse to sign Arod if he opts out and then he does, where did Arod sign? Now they take themselves out of the Santana race but all of a sudden all I read is how there the favorite and eventually they will get him. I honestly hope that Minny accepts a deal with the Yankees and Santana vetoes it. That would be such a slap in the face to the organization and it would be so sweet to see.

I want Santana more then anyone and I am willing to give up the farm but could this happen sooner then later? I mean it’s been such a stressful situation and at the end as a Met fan I am just waiting to be disappointed and to hear he went to the Yankees and Santana signed a 6 year contract…..

Get it done Omar, Come on!!!!!!!!

This keeps happening because the Yankee’s insist upon TRYING to strongarm players into signing by putting a “deadline” on their offer. I don’t know who’s idea it is, Steinbrenner or Cashman, but it doesn’t work. Why try to start a new relationship with a player by placing a deadline on the offer. Talk about ticking someone off on the first impression. I am so sick and tired of hearing “how it’s an honor to put on the pinstips.” Does anyone else get the feeling that anyone that says this is told they must say it??? I really think that anyone that works with them feels constantly threatened by the massive PR machine that they are. The Yankee’s are all about money, bottom line. Players go there because the get the biggest payday and get a ton of PR, not to play for this “wonderful organization.”

  6. RichardK says:

He aint going to the Mets, not gonna happen, either he stays where he is or Boston, Yankees blow the Twins away and overpay.

We dont have what it takes, even though he isnt worth that much thanks to Zito every damn pitcher in baseball with an ERA under 3 thinks he’s worth his weight in gold.

  7. Protes says:

These Santana rumors have become like your girlfriend telling you she’s late. I don’t want to know anymore until it’s true.

  8. BiggieSmalls says:

it amazing how the press gives hany a complete pass on the whole steroids question.. i wasnt there? what kind of answer is that?

And how does MLB and Selig the used car salesman continue to let this buffoon comment about other teams players without ramifications?

  9. cyclone says:

Hank knows how to keep the Yankees on the back page. That’s about all he’s good for.

As for Omar, who I like and based solely on this offseason so far, I am still trying to figure out what he’s good for…it’s December 20 and still no major move, and at least one hole in the rotation that has yet to be addressed.

    “The decision is my decision…”

This guy is a bigger scumbag than his father.

  11. stickguy says:

I was wondering the same thing about Hankie running afoul of tampering rules.

If you start making statelment about signing him as a FA, stuff like that, it is blatant that you are trying to manipulate the market.

Other than that, he is just a big blowhard dope.

    • BiggieSmalls says:

MLB tampering rules prohibit club officials from publicly talking about players under contract with other clubs..

he specifically mentioning Santana by name many many times..

  12. DMMP says:

You would think that the mets would have the upper hand because even though their prospects might be like .1 lower than what the yankees or boston can offer, there is the whole factor of getting santana out of your league, and thats quite important I would say… I’d say that gives the mets the upper hand but what do I know?

  13. Ken Dynamo says:

the yankees can definitely offer a nice package for him, but since they, or any team, will basically only trade contingent on a long term contract, i just dont see the yankees shelling out a 120m/6year contract. i know they super rich and all, but with the luxury and a-rod and all the other bloated payroll problems, i just think there has to be a limit.

of course, to block the red sox AND the mets, i guess anything is possible.

  14. WhiteMediaj says:

Don’t blame The Yankees about Arod being back to the Yankees . Did you remember what Hank has to say about “Arod doesn’t understand how to be a Yankees and appreciate wearing a Yankee Uniform” Blame Scott Boras who decided Arod to Opt-out on his contract. It was Arod who set-up meeting with Hank in Tampa and decided to return to the Yankees.

The Yankees needs an Ace like Santana to compete with Boston Redsox. Mets already have Pedro while The Yankees have overrated Wang. He’s not an Ace..

  15. WhiteMediaj says:

The Yankees will have 60+ million coming off books next year payroll , so Yankees can afford to sign Johan. The Yankees will have New Yankees stadium in 2009.. The Yankees will not have to pay luxury tax and revenue sharing next year.

  16. WhiteMediaj says:

Yankees haters and Redsox fans making a big deal How Hank’s flip-flopper and his personality being an a**hole about overruling Cashman not let do his job as Gm? Hank is son of George and He’s speaks what on his mind. Why do Yankees haters and Redsox Fans care when Hank speaks to the media?Worry about your team not the Yankees. Do you remember that Sob Larry Lucchinno refer The Yankees as an “Evil Empire”? Did I forgot something ? Is Larry Lucchinno is the owner of the Redsox? Stfu Larry. The Sob Lucchinno’s only President of Boston Redsox not the owner. Why does He talks too much ? I hope He chokes while eating a sandwich….

  17. WhiteMediaj says:

I don’t think the suggestions of tampering were so much built around the mentioning of Santana’s name in and of itself, as much as the seemingly explicit overtures through the press that seemed directed towards Santana.

The problem is not making known that you would like to acquire a good player, the problem is trying to, for instance, encourage that player to excersize his no trade clause to any other team by promising him more money than anyone else would pay or whatever.

  18. WhiteMediaj says:

Redsox are New Evil Empire Jr.

  19. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I’d have to believe that nothing is close.

Nobody takes GM Bill Smith seirously saying that he’d go the season.

The Mets, Red Sox, and Yankees all aren’t meeting the requirements, and, frankly, never will. With the Haren deal, prices may change, or they may not, but the Twins certainly don’t want nothing out of him and see him go to the free agency.

If my name was Omar Minaya, I’d be waiting until the Twins are satisfied with the Red Sox’s offer and offer Gomez, Heilman, Guerra/Pelfrey, Mulvey & Humber and let the Twins jump for joy and accept the deal.

  20. icedrake523 says:

So basically, there’s nothing to report. Unless the Yankees change their mind on including Hughes AND Kennedy, nothing is going to happen. Twins aren’t going to accept a deal just because it’s on the table.
