According to Newsday, Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner
recently told reporters that his team is no longer interested in free-agent RHP Mark Prior.
In a report yesterday from FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wrote that the Astros and Rangers have been the most ‘aggressive’ in trying to sign Prior, whose goal is to sign a one-year deal, ‘then re-enter the free-agent market in a stronger position next off-season.’
According to Rosenthal, Prior is not expected to pitch in the majors before mid-May.
Nevertheless, the Mets, Cardinals and Padres, including several others, are interested in Prior, writes Rosenthal.

Do this. Blow him away.
Do this. Blow him.
Get Prior. He may be another Maine/Perez.
Or not. One year, who cares?
Just don’t hand me some 4-year Livan crap.
Whats the point if he cant pitch until after the allstar break?
Think Mulder.
Okay, so seven wins after the ASB.
Somehow I think one of our starters will falter in the first half.
Mid-May is hardly “after the all-star break.” The Mets should definitely make this move. Sure, he’s injury-prone, but if he really only wants one year, how could they not do this?? All these other FAs are looking for 3, 4 year deals and they’re definitely not worth it. Prior can pitch quite well (when healthy of course) and the Mets are in dire need of a pitcher. If they make this deal, they give up NO prospects, they get a ONE year deal, and they get a solid #3 or 4 SP. And if he gets injured again (which sadly, is likely) so be it! The team eats the money on his contract and they work something else out. Sitting by idly waiting for Johan Santana to simply fall into their laps is not a good managerial tactic. They must do something in the meantime.
I love Hank. He’s such a moron.
Who thinks that GMs and player agents are gonna get sick of Hankee and his big mouth. It seems he thinks he can independently affect every player’s negotiations. He is such a clown because you get the sense he is trying to strong arm people into decisions by not allowing the Yanks to get “used” in negotiations (as we’ve seen happen to the Mets many times–Hampton, Mussina, Biggio, etc) and yet you know any player that has any appeal to the Yankees will end up getting a ridiculous offer from them and he will spin it like he got a bargain or they somehow came out on top (see ARod, Mariano and their obscene contrracts). Where did Cashman get transfered to?
Hank is the Owner equivelant of Scott Boras. Eventually teams are going to sour on him and avoid trading with the Yankees. There are teams today that stay away from drafting Boras clients althogether.
*cough* pelfrey *cough*
Comments like this one are actually helpful to other GM’s. The players agent cant hype up the Yankees as a suitor and the player will end up taking a little less.
Most of everything else he says will likely annoy other GM’s, or players and agents, or at least Mets and Red Sox fans…
I think that the Mets have to not think like a small market team going for scraps when talking about a guy like PRIOR. This is the type of guy a big market team gets and “warehouses” until they are ready to go. He may be done, but what if he isn’t? Spend the money on a one year deal or a deal with a club option depending on when he returns to the bigs. The Mets have the money to experiment on a guy who could bust or be an ace.
I’d say he’s worth a shot for some insurance. If we get lucky and send away a potential fifth starter he could step in. Or he could let Pelfrey season a bit in the minors for a while if everyone stays healthy. Give him a shot.
Scoop this guy up. Omars needs to see this as a risk free signing. If it pans out, we get quality innings from an outstanding pitcher, if not, we cut him, or send him to the minors, and after this year cut ties. It’s simple.
They don’t need Prior, they are going to get Santana…
They are the almighty Yankees…
I figure the mets need 2 solid SPs to step in by mid season (say July 1 +/-).
They wil be filling in for the inevitable Duque injury/vacation, and either Pedro needing a break, ot the 5th starter not getting it done. But hoepfully not both.
Prior, if he is back and pitching well by June, would be perfect, and protentially an upgrade.
Pelfrey, if he isn’t already the #5 to start the season (I think he should be), or traded, can be working on getting his pitches working in AAA, and be the other call up.
If Pelfrey is in AAA, it means that they got another SP for the rotation. Could be Santana, Heilman, a 2/3 guy (Snell), reclamation project (colon, Capuana). Anybody to take a spot.
IMO, if they add a 5th guy that has something left, and can have Prior and Pelfrey (+ Humber) in the minors getting ready, they will be in good shape.
The rotation will be strong, and the back ups way better than in the past.
Just because he said it doesn’t mean its his decision. If Cashman and his scouting/evaluating team decide that Prior isn’t worth it (for whatever reason), obviously the Steinbrenner’s are going to be made aware. Just because Hank released the Yankees opinion on Prior doesn’t mean it was him to decide whether or not to get him.
Hey Mets, for a 20% increase, you have to do a hell of a lot better than this.
Get Prior, get Santana and let’s go!
As a Met fan, I’d LOVE Prior under my tree…the only thing is, I’d like some sort of team option, even if it means slightly overpaying for year one…my thought is that the team siging Prior should not simply get him for a partial season so he can try to raise his value and immediately leave. I’m thinking Yank**s/Leiber type deal….except Prior wouldn’t be paid to sit an ENTIRE year, and has better upside..
I don’t see this as “The Move” to take away all my ‘07 pain. However, if all it means is the Mets throw some of that 20% ticket increase money Prior’s way, while not further diminishing a future trade/signing, Go Get Him.
Are we going to sign both Garcia and Prior for when El Duque and Pedro go to the DL midway through the year? Because we could do that. Is Johan Santana available…I’ve heard good things.
He would be an excellent move to help make up for the lack of 35 starts out of Pedro and Duque.
60-66 starts from Maine and Perez, with 75 from Pedro, Duque and Prior would be nice (and reasonable)
That still leaves ~25 starts to get from Pelfrey or others though, which really was the issue last season. Hopefully when Prior is ready to go Pelfrey wont be 0-7 again.
Go get him. Obviously our young guys need more seasoning in the minors. If we can pull off a trade for Blanton or maybe even Burnett and add Prior once Duque and/or Martinez goes down again we should be in good shape. Prior is a past ACE that got hurt and we NEED an ace. Just imagine he comes back to haunt the Cubbies. Wouldn’t you guys want it to be in a Mets uniform?
