Buzz: Mets may be Favorites for Garcia
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 24, 2007 10:18 am

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Rangers are now longer interested in free-agent RHP Freddie Garcia.

Meanwhile, in an older post to SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote that the Mets were among teams who were pursuing Garcia, who will not be able to pitch until June, ‘at the earliest.’

…the buzz during the Winter Meetings had been that the Mets were the front runners for garcia, but were holding back until they know how best to proceed in the trade market

…from what i can gather, the Mets continue to have interest in Bartolo Colon, as well, while monitoring his progress in the Winter Leagues…

Well if we are not getting Santana, I would like to see us sign both Colon and Garcia. Colon for this year and Garcia for this year and beyond. He might not be able to help as at all this year but I believe that he can come back from this injury and help us next year.

I would rather take the risk on Mark Prior who won’t start until June.

    Re: Freddy Garcia

    In a word….WHY?

    • J.R. Dot says:

      1 Word Answer:

      Garcia

    • PC521 says:

Do you guys think Sheets is still an option to be traded at this point?

      • cyclone says:

Sure, but the way the trade market is, the Brewers will probably want Jose Reyes as part of any package for Sheets lol

    • Brennan says:

Garcia is a good number 2 when healthy, he would be a nice addition later this year. Look at his stats.Next year Hernandez will be gone. I would prefer Prior but I have read that he wants to go to San diago. I would not mind taking a non garenteed flier on colon.

OMAR PLZ TRADE CHURCH + SCHNEIDER FOR MILLEDGE K THX

  6. Giaco says:

thr only way I would take Garcia is if he is the Sele/Williams/Lawrence of this year…. role wise… not production wise lol

  7. njMets0987 says:

    why why why

I would rather have Lohse and that’s saying a lot. Maybe if he signs at league minimum it would be OK.

Let’s sign Prior. He’ll be better after rehab than Garcia ever was or will be.

  8. Steve from Upstate says:

How well did Garcia pitch last year before he got hurt? Also, how old is he?

  9. njMets0987 says:

Freddy Garcia is 31 years old. He went 1-5 in 11 starts last year with an ERA of 5.90 in 58 innings.

  10. njMets0987 says:

The Phillies paid $10,000,000 for 1 win. Let’s not make the same mistake with this guy.

  11. genius says:

garcia is a POS. typical mets small market mentality.

    • Brennan says:

The problem is there are no # 1 starters in the free agent market. The teams that have good pichers to trade are asking for youre entire minor league system plus your first born. I think at this point you have to take some risks on guys like prior, colon and Garcia. And give your young guys a shot.

  12. throatneedle says:

Colon, Garcia, Johan Santana, and/or Livan Hernandez….

They would all really enjoy Merengue Night at Shea

  13. jp23 says:

I would take a shot at Garcia. He was hurting last year, plus playing in a hitters friendly ballpark. he will be a nice addition to the team in June. He can not be much worse than Pelfrey or Jason Vargas

  14. tfc3rid says:

I’d rather Colon than Garcia… At least Colon is a Cy Young winner…

  15. mavicario says:

I like Freddy Garcia. I think if we sign him to a 2yr deal it would be a good move. You never know what our rotation is gonna look like in June and to have this guy on the horizon can only be a good thing.

  16. ExileInLA says:

I would take 1 (only 1) of the “mid season recovery project” pitchers.

Right now, we have 2 AAAA starters (Pelfrey & Humber) with little or no trade value. If they show they actually can pitch, then they go back to being potential #3 starters with less than 1 year of service time.

I would give each of them 5 starts to show what they can do. To start the year, the rotation should be Pedro – Perez – Maine Pelfrey – Duque (the #5 only pitches once in the first 3 weeks). After the rotation regularly needs a #5, bring up Humber (and send down anyone from the pen who has proven weak), and send Duque to the pen.

If they can’t pitch to a 4.50 ERA, turn them into a reliever.

If one of them works, then he stays in the rotation and Duque and the “recovery project” battle for #5. If both of them work, then one of them probably has improved his trade value enough to go back to MIN for Santana in July, with a deal of either Pelfrey or Humber + Guerra + Gomez.

And, if neither of them works, then Omar can always empty out the farm system in July for another starter…

  17. Why not Garcia. Doesn’t cost the Mets anything but money.

    • Gland says:

Agreed. There’s no harm there in signing him. That is what teams with money should do, take a chance on someone like that.
