You mean you can get a good “defenisve minded” catcher without trading away a future all star?

(Yes I am still bitter)

Vinnie December 27, 2007 at 11:33 am

Who Olivo? He is not a defensive minded catcher and they guy swings at every first pitch. No plate discipline at all. I would rather have Estrada than Olivo.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:34 am

He doesn’t swing at every pitch, he swings at every Jose.

bada bam!

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 11:40 am

And Jose throws every Sandy in front of him.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:46 am

lol

+2

i’ve never seen Reyes side step behind Alomar so quickly.

And you can tell Alomar’s thinking, “I better protect my guy or else I’m outta here.”

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Except when he is singing Reggaeton and people are throwing tomatos at him.

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:49 am

He threw out over 30% of baserunners last year.. 4th highest in the NL…

I know the blocked ball arguement and what not.. can’t find stats on that… but 4th best against runners against him seems defensive minded to me.

Vinnie December 27, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Not saying your numbers are incorrect but i heard Schneider through out 31.4 and he was 4th best..

Vinnie December 27, 2007 at 12:16 pm
extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 1:30 pm

As per ESPN Olivio was 4th best:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3169748

Again stats are stats.. the point is Scheinder and Olivio are pretty similar.. one cost nothing.. one cost a great young talent.

That is the only point I made..

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:33 am

+3, if you add “potential”

and i’m still bitter as well.

mrose December 27, 2007 at 11:38 am

right…cause Olivo would have been a wonderful fit with us, after he bashed us both verbally and physically after that mini brawl the last weekend…

If I recall he said something about hating the Mets..the last thing we need is our team to not get along…

and yea…defensive minded?? eh…maybe…a little..but damn his offense is horrendous..yeah he can hit a bit..but come on ..he just swings

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:40 am

I am not saying the Mets should of signed Miguel Olivo.. just saying avg catchers who play good defense are not worth a (potential) all star player like the mets gave up for Milledge

And seriously people..Schnider is a black hole at the plate… if you think any differently you are fooling youself..

mrose December 27, 2007 at 11:49 am

i’m not happy with the milledge trade..but at the same time…milledge was still a PROSPECT…and i’m holding judgement until we see what he becomes…

and no i’m not considering Schneider to be great at the plate..but as shown..he can at least get on base..take wallks…etc…

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:51 am

Great.. take a walk batting 8th.. that’s gonna be a HUGE help…

The mets pitching staff should be setting all kinds of RBI records this year..

mrose December 27, 2007 at 11:55 am

you don’t understand the idea of clearing the pitchers spot do you???

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Ha.. great.. let’s trade more young talent so we can “clear the pitchers spot” about 35% of the time

That otta fix thix team!

Nate W. December 27, 2007 at 11:31 am

…and there was much rejoicing

…from the starting pitchers of the AL Central who now have 3 quick AB’s every night to help keep the pitch count down.

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:36 am

What do you think the Schnide is? If they re-named him automatic out no one would know the difference.

mrose December 27, 2007 at 11:40 am

Schneider : 235/326/336
Olivo: 237/262/405

And Schneider likely won’t hate the other players..

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:44 am

Are those number supposed to prove that Olivo is worse hitter then Shcneider? You’re kidding right? cause is obp is .64 higher for one year?

Give me a break.. this wasn’t my original arguement.. but if you gave me the choice of Schneider and Church or Olivo and Milledge on my roster.. I choose Olivo and Milledge every time.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:44 am

wow 326? that’s almost as good as the NL MVP

extrawhitemeat December 27, 2007 at 11:57 am

Church and Scheinder are in their 30s.. they are not getting any better.. what you see is what you get..

And trading away Milledge at apparently his lowest value.. for those two.. is horrendous.

Milledge doesn’t need to do anything else in his career for this trade to be a joke.. at one one time he could of brought us players like Manny Ramirez or Barry Zito.. and now he brings us two spares parts who have already peaked..

I can apprecaite you being optimistic.. and really this has gotten more serious then I thought.. but there is no way we got fair value for Milledge.. the trade is a joke.. a chip on his shoulder is the missing piece for a guy like Milledge.

mrose December 27, 2007 at 11:59 am

I see what your saying and I agree…if milledge is really looked upon that badly by teams, we made a bad trade..but yes, I am an optimistic mets fan…

I’m hoping for the best, but not particularly expecting it…

And dude, this hasn’t gotten more serious than it is…if I gave you that impression than I’m sorry…

i’m bored at work 2 days after xmas…and I’m the type that when I have the time, I enjoy a debate, especially about baseball

At least you don’t act like firemetsmanagement :)

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:19 pm

“…off the Schneid.”

Something tells me we are going to be hearing lots of that this year (lots of miserably prolonged slumps).

Nate W. December 27, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Back to your original arguement. As evidence by Schnieders walk totals alone we can see that he does not swing at every first pitch he sees. I wont even bother looking up the stat, but I am certain he sees plenty more pitcher per AB than Olivo.

btw, the Mets already have a Miguel Olivo, his name is Ramon Castro…

The Dotel Motel December 27, 2007 at 11:32 am

Here’s my reaction to this: “Oh.”

m00kie December 27, 2007 at 11:38 am

lol

carlosgomezisfast December 27, 2007 at 11:37 am

Way to go Omar! Sleeping at the wheel again!

m00kie December 27, 2007 at 11:38 am

???

don’t we already have a couple catchers?

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:43 am

we let estrada go, so we needed another one

mrnecio3 December 27, 2007 at 12:08 pm

Why do we need another one? Are Castro and Schneider not enough?

-10 for not paying attention…

carlosgomezisfast December 27, 2007 at 11:45 am

oh yeah. I take this back then ;-)

FBones24 December 27, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Don’t just regurgitate “asleep at the wheel” Omar comments every time another team makes a trade. Geez.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:39 pm

But I do agree. Carlos Gomez is pretty fast.

carlosgomezisfast December 27, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Geez guys, its called sarcasm. I’ll make sure I’m more clear next time.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 1:01 pm

I was just breakin em. I do that from time to time.

yagottabelieve December 27, 2007 at 12:02 pm

I understand the unrest.

To me, the question is not “Would we be better off with Olivo than Schneider?”… it’s “How were the Mets so inept that they completely misread the market this offseason?”

If you think back to October, word was the catchers we wanted most were (a) Molina, (b) Hernandez and (c) Olivo.

Problem was, according to Mets insiders, the cost was too great. In fact ,sources “knowledgable about the Mets thinking” said those crazy, unreasonable Marlins were demanding Milledge or Gomez. And there was no way – NO WAY – we would mortgage the future without bringing back a much bigger return than a weak hitting catcher. Otherwise, Omar was “very comfortable” going forward with what he already had.

So we signed Torrealba, reneged on the deal, and wound up trading for Schneider…

And then, guess what — the Marlins, who we’d been told were demanding we trade a young stud or two for Olivo, simply released him… making him available for absolutely nothing.

So, to recap, so far this offseason, we have:

(a) Traded Milledge to get a catcher even though a guy we allegedly wanted more was later available for nothing.

(b) Signed Castillo to an insane four year deal (I’m a big Castillo fan and I’m sorry , 2 years with an option, tops) when again, a guy we supposedly wanted more (Eckstein) would have been available for much less.

Is this Monday morning QB-ing? Yup. Is it unfair? Maybe. But Omar got some great press for offeasons in the past. He deserves some accountability this time.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:06 pm

+5, good analysis

I usually don’t read these long-a55 posts, but this one is pretty good. Is in hindsight/unfair? Of course. That’s why we’re always right. Either way, Omar and crew was way off on judging the market this off season.

CaseStreet December 27, 2007 at 12:45 pm

Right, Olivo was later available. After many teams signed other catchers. Did you want the mets to wait and see if he would be released?

Again, Eckstein was later available. And signing isn’t bad, we lock up our 2B for a few years. He plays great D and is a decent #2 hitter behind Reyes and in front of Wright. 2B isn’t a position you get much hitting from unless you’ve got an Utley or Uggla type. Eckstein didn’t want to play 2b, defense not as good as Castillo, wanted more money and years.

So what’s the bid deal?

CaseStreet December 27, 2007 at 12:49 pm

I meant, “And the Castillo signing isn’t bad, etc….”

droseatwork December 27, 2007 at 11:39 am

We’re kicking ass over on busted coverage.

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 11:40 am

Eh, at least he’s out of the division. No more of those late inning homers we give out to scrubs like Olivio.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:47 am

or late inning beatdowns on reyes.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 11:42 am

Fire Isiah.

Santa Agee December 27, 2007 at 11:43 am

Who should the knicks starting 5 be?

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:48 am

any five from the courts of rucker park, decrease ticket prices, pick up #1 draft picks for the next 10 years.

Jim December 27, 2007 at 11:53 am

I heard that the Knicks were looking to trade for Santana also.

jonas22 December 27, 2007 at 9:38 pm

thats crazy enough that it just might work

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 11:59 am

Nate, Crawford, Q-Rich, Lee, Balkman

Go undersized but guys that want to play. The lineup still sucks, but Isiah put it together. Only has himself to blame.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Q-Rich has no place on a basketball court. He is so bad and worthless if his shot is off.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:07 pm

I just think he should start so he doesnt get into a fist fight with Isiah. Although, that would be pretty funny, so I can live with benching him.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Isiah’s dangerous. He said it himself. It’s a matter of life or death. hahahahaha That guy’s such a clown.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:17 pm

But Marbury has so much $hit on him. You wouldn’t believe what Marbury has on him. I can’t wait for the book / movie / mini-series.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:24 pm

Did you hear that L-Millz to the max is going to narrate the “5hit” on Isiah? True story.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:29 pm

That is awesome! Can’t wait for that to come out. Hey, being that Starbury is hanging out with LMillz now, do you think he’ll add “Bend Ya Kneez” to his already infamous reportoir of “Get in the truck”?

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 11:49 am

fire isiahhh firee isiahhh sell the knickss

Jim December 27, 2007 at 11:47 am

How long before pitchers and catchers report? Can’t come soon enough so we have real things totalk about.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:48 am

7 weeks ago, didn’t you hear?

Jim December 27, 2007 at 11:51 am

Sorry, I missed that. I was to busy making my Johan welcome to Shea sign.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:55 am

remember to staple dollars on to it.

Jim December 27, 2007 at 11:58 am

Damn, I hope I can lift it when I’m done!

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:10 pm

If not, you can just see our clubhouse attendant.

Santa Agee December 27, 2007 at 11:50 am

PG Jamal Crawford can score
SG Wilson Chandler
SF Zach Randolph can score
PF Davis Lee can rebound
C Randolph Morris

Could they be any worse?

points guy December 27, 2007 at 11:56 am

How about Schneider at C? I hear he’s good defensively.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:00 pm

hahaah

CaptainWright December 27, 2007 at 12:09 pm

Only one with any semblance on the Knicks that shows any gumption of wanting to help the team is DAVID LEE. He is the only keeper on this absolute disgraceful team.

These thugs got their ludicrous contracts and now they are all out to lunch. 1/2 a$$ing it to the max.

That is why you just don’t give every athlete a multimillion dollar deal.

Look at Curry – he is the disgusting epitome of getting hte money and not earning even 1/2 of a cent of it. Loser.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:10 pm

“Look at Curry – he is the disgusting epitome of getting hte money and not earning even 1/2 of a cent of it. Loser.”

Ummm, that’s about 99% of the league.

Yes, David Lee is the man. What about Balkman? He’s a hustler no?

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 12:21 pm

curry and randolph’s diet – see food.

i heard that on wfan its not really funny, but whatever.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:27 pm

It reminds me of Uma Thurman’s Fox Force Five joke in Pulp Fiction.

For bonus points, does anyone remember it? I do…

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Three tomatoes are walking down the street- a poppa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato. Baby tomato starts lagging behind. Poppa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and smooshes him

and says . . . someone finish it!!

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 12:35 pm

ohh catch up?
i watch too many movies

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 12:42 pm

he is really out there.
im watching the holiday now. i really like it. haha

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:44 pm

The only thing better than his movies would be to see Cow-Bell-Man hanging from the foul pole by his tighty whities.

MacD81 December 27, 2007 at 12:50 pm

A father tomato and a son tomato are walking down the steet. The son tomato is lagging behind so the father tomato turns around, stomps on him and says “ketchup!”

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Great job!!!! But you finished in 3rd place.

Bing, what do we have for the third place winner?

Nothing. Sorry.

What was Omar thinking letting Jesus Flores get away? Fire him.

tinathemetsgrl December 27, 2007 at 12:21 pm

We can’t win 90+ games, much less a division title without him.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:27 pm

You’re so right Tina. The guy is a stud! He is the 2nd coming of Alberto Castillo.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Can’t beat Castillo’s ’stache.

dannyb December 27, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Yea that was pretty sweet. That poor guy was exiled to Kansas City where he was beaten and tortured to the tune of 3 seasons of hapless, losing, miserable baseball.

MetsMachine December 27, 2007 at 12:02 pm

You people still crying about the “Milledge trade” are really getting on my nerves.

It wasn’t a trade. It wasn’t supposed to be fair. It was just Omar unloading a player who didn’t fit the Mets G Rated persona.

Thats what the Mets do. They trade away players, albeit quality talent, don’t fit the happy kiddy Mets program.

One day, the brass will learn thats not what win championships. I am hoping hard that Lastings absolutely destroys the Mets this year. Then maybe Omar can take himself down a peg or two.

points guy December 27, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Yep, that Kevin Mitchell was a bad influence on Darryl and Doc.

MetsMachine December 27, 2007 at 12:13 pm

Long time ago my friend….long time ago.

If Omar was running the 1986 club now, based on the Mets new standards….they’d be left with 3 bench players and Ron Darling starting every game.

Simply put….just win. I don’t care what the players do off the field or how they work with the community.

WINNING…..CURES….ALL.

anyone who is arguing for Olivo as our catcher has totally lost it, I mean, are you kidding? Really? You want this guy on our team? I”m speechless. Mets fans will go to any limit to bash their GM, 2nd guess the organization, and in the process make a fool of themselves. Incredible. Miguel Olivo? Really?
