Read: Top-Prospect Kevin Mulvey
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 27, 2007 12:54 pm

In the Star-Ledger, Don Burke writes an in-depth profile of Mets RHP Kevin Mulvey, who has been mentioned in trade rumors on several occasions during this off-season.

Willie Randolph, on Mulvey, as quoted by Burke…

“I like his poise.  I don’t think he was intimidated at all. Spring training is such a small window, but I like the fact that he showed a real poise and presence. And his stuff was crisp and decent…He has all the tools. I’m excited about him and from what I hear in the organization, a lot of our guys are saying good things about him too.”

Mulvey is ranked as the team’s second-best pitching prospect, behind Deolis Guerra, and ahead of Phil Humber, by Baseball America, who writes…

“Mulvey throws four pitches for strikes and keeps everything down.  His fastball, which sits at 87-91 mph and touches 94, features good sink and run…His competitiveness makes his whole greater than the sum of his parts…He’ll open 2008 in Triple-A, but Mulvey could get a look in the rotation by midseason. He projects as a No. 3 or 4 starter.”

as i mentioned during the Winter Meetings, the Twins and A’s seemed to really like mulvey, which, to me, says a lot, since those two organizations are known for having such strong scouting departments

In 26 starts for Double-A Binghamton last season, Mulvey was 11–10 with a 3.32 ERA, while striking out 110 batters and walking 43 through 152 innings.

I was at that Mets/Padres game where Piazza went deep twice. Before the game Mulvey was on the field getting his picture taken with Omar and others. I remember wondering who the heck he was, but the name stuck in my mind. Its kind of cool to see a pitching prospect that others are high on.

  2. genius says:

    YAY…..another 3 or 4 or maybe a 5 starter….YAYYYYY

would be nice to develop a 1 starter once in a blue moon. you know, somebody like kazmir

    • points guy says:

      +3

    • Nate W. says:

      or like Guerra?

      Here’s to hoping…

    • storklovr says:

kazmir has shoulder issues and he refused to adjust his style…mike prior-ville is just around the corner for him…but yes it was a really STUPID trade…

instead of hitting up the athletix for a major leaguer…why not grab up their aaa pitching staff.

      Colby Lewis
      Dallas Braden
      Erasmo Ramirez
      Rudy Lugo
      Ryan Meaux

give them gomez and heilman. most pitchers only survive the first 3 years of pitching in the majors. then they get figured out or pooped out…santana has his best years behind him….Minaya was lucky not to have gotten zito…great numbers he put up for them giants….lets hope he is lucky again and lets santana go to the yankees

  3. Giaco says:

    nice numbers – 11–10 with a 3.32 ERA

    maybe low run support..

our luck, we trade him and keep pelfrey and mulvey goes out and wins 17 per year

i’d much rather keep the young guns for the 5th spot than Livan, Lohse, etc

    • gowrightgo says:

Agree on all accounts. whatever decision on trades is made, the guy we keep is likely to flounder while the guy we trade is likely to be the next Brian Bannister

    • gmoney45 says:

He played for binghamton. I live there and go to games….that team was terrible. He really was a bright spot. He keeps the ball down for the most part and is very competitive. He may not have superstar stuff, but many many many pitchers without superstar stuff can be good if they battle. The names Maddux and Glavine come to mind?

  4. nagel100 says:

he pitched very well in his 2 games at AAA.

    Did Bannister have better numbers?

    keep him.

    • extrawhitemeat says:

I think Bannister is the perfect comparison for this guy in terms of ceiling…

Jim Callis on his BA chats isn’t very high on Mulvey… or really any of our guys.

  5. Nate W. says:

Its is a little funny how much Mulvey seems to be integral in getting Blanton. Why not let Mulvey develop into Blanton in two years?

    • points guy says:

could happen. more likely that it won’t happen than it will. we can also lose a bunch of games in the process.

sadly a pitcher who wins 1-4 games over .500 is a huge commodity these days in baseball.

      • dannyb says:

        (see Carlos Silva)

      • Nate W. says:

Which is why it makes all the more sense not to trade two of them for one. Especially when that one isnt very proven himself in Blanton.

Who knows which one of Pelfrey, Humber, and Mulvey (and Heilman) could be a solid #3 starter for a few years.

Trade the wrong two in the same trade and you are setting the organization back a few years. Its not James Dolan / Isiah Thomas bad, but its still pretty bad.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Oh, please. Blanton-like success for any one of our “Generation L” is a top end, Christmas present-type scenario for the Mets. Blanton is a young, legit number 2. Pel, Mul, and Hum are three rolls of the dice. One of them with Gomez for Blanton is not a bad deal. That is what pitchers cost, as points guy points out.

  6. dannyb says:

It’s amazing how many “stud” pitchers you see fall flat on their face until one comes up that can be a true ace.

I hate to beat a dead horse to death, but if we still had Kazmir, we would be odds on favorites to be in the World Series right now….well, in October but you know what I mean.

    • Agree about Kazmir

What do you think about going after Matt Cain. San Fran is so desperate for hitting we can trade Delgado (pay his contract), Gomez, Humber and Molvey and maybe throw in Gotay. It is alot but we would keep Fernando Martinez who is the met’s only A prospect

      • dannyb says:

I’ll tell you what. I would have done that trade 5-7 years ago when we could have gotten J.T. Snow back or just brought up Jorge Toca (what a bust) to fill Delgado’s shoes. But now, who plays first base? Matt Carp? I’m not ready for that yet.

        • I’m sure there are some mediocre 1st basemen available by trade. Delgado is our 6 hitter.
But Matt Cain is an ace, with as much potential as Bedard, and less injury prone.

        • dannyb says:

He sure didn’t have an ace-type season last year.

        • He did have an ERA in the mid 3.00’s and he was playing for a team who’s three hitter was ray duramn

        • dannyb says:

Hahaha…that’s pretty funny. I still remember going to a Yankees / Royals game. KC’s cleanup hitter was Bip Roberts.

I remember Cain had an off year though, didn’t he? Record was bad?

    • Bench5urvivor says:

I too would LOVE to still have Kazmir, but to say if we still had him we would be odds on favorites is a mis-step. Tragic though it was, that trade shaped the team we have today. I doubt highly that half of the moves Omar has made over his tenure would have been made with Kazmir still on the roster, not to mention the fact that Duquette could possibly still be GM if not for that HORRIBLE reach and overpayment of a “trade”

    • DerekBellsMustachio says:

if we still had kazmir, we would not have Oli Perez, we would not have John Maine. We would have a LOT of question marks. Hard to argue the Kazmir trade was probably the biggest blunder of all time, but still who knows where we would be had we held on to himi. I like where we’re at right now. The future is bright

  7. TheLiability says:

I think Blanton as a 1-4 win pitcher above .500 in the AL translates into a 5-7 over. He would be a nice, young aquisitions to add to a promising team with a promising future.

For everyone who hates so much it is unfortunate cause you forget how hopeless we were not too long ago and you are now acting like Yankee fans demanding a team full of All Stars overnight.

    • Not to mention that he is going from a lathargic offense in oakland to one of the best in baseball. He should win 19 games.

      • TheLiability says:

I have had Blanton on my fantasy teams for a few years now, so I have pad close attentiont to his starts.

        -he eats up innings
        -starter for three years
-has become a pitcher and not a thrower,
        -goes deep in games
        - limits his walks

I personally think he would slot ahead of both Maine and OP…

He was a touted prospect like a Pelfrey, yet Blanton devleped. Who knows with Pelfrey or any of the other prospects. But reading about Mulveys attitude, he jumps up in my book because at this level talkent can be so similar,d rive is the only things that makes or breaks these athletes.

  8. Mister Koo says:

Assuming no pitching deals are made, if Mulvey pitches lights out in spring training (like Bannister did in 2006), does he get the 5th starter job, or would that go to Pelfrey no matter how badly he bombs in spring training?

  9. wrighton05 says:

The A’s like all Met prospects until thy are offered to them in a trade.

  10. Just because some hack says he is projected to be a 3 or 4 starter doesn;t mean we have to believe him. Saying “3 or 4″ is a safe bet. I have been following Mulvey since we first signed him. This kids can pitch. Let the kids play! Catch the Rising Stars!

  11. Scorp6 says:

I have zero interest in anything Willie Randolph has to say about any prospect in our organization. He has no intention of giving any young player a chance to succeed at the major league level (see Lastings Milledge). I find it ironic that Randolph of all people with no managerial experience, who is supposedly “learning” on the job, is not willing to help develope or at least maintain the younger players in the system. There is a reason why our farm system is not on par with other teams. Omar loves signing his old, and I mean old literally cronies, even on the AAA level. Then he hires an incompetent manager who refuses and/or is incapable of learning himself. How is Willie the Gut supposed to teach and nuture anyone if he can not get over his “I’m all about winning” BS? I do not consider one NL East title winning. I do not consider being completely outmanaged in the NLCS winning. I do not consider the disaster of 2007 winning. Willie Randolph needs a stiff reality check, actually he needs a unemployment check!

    • dannyb says:

Wow…so you think Willie deserves an extension?

One NL East title after 17 years without one. How about that? How about 3 straight winning seasons? How about the rings he wears on his fingers? Knock him all you want, they guy has more championships alone than our franchise has in their history.

He is the right guy for the job. You’re never going to agree with every move a manager makes. That doesn’t make either of you right or wrong. There is more than one way to play baseball – winning baseball. Be more concerned about the end results.

      • Nate W. says:

Be less concerned about the end result and more concerned with the way he goes about it. The way he goes about it lends one to see that the end result is in spite of Willie, not because if him to a large extent.

        • dannyb says:

Question….is this team in a better position now than it was when he became manager and Omar became GM?

        • Nate W. says:

yes dannyb, but not because of the manager, rather is spite of the manager.

Omar has done a wonderful job of improving the personal in the short term and has created a team that is far and away better than the one that was here when he arrived.

Question, would this team still be in a better position now than it was when Omar took over, if he had kept Art Howe?

        • Mister Koo says:

Yes. But how much was that due to Willie? Here’s what happened in his first year:

Jose Reyes finally was injury free and was able to play a full season.

David Wright played his first full season and did great.

Pedro Martinez pitched a full season and won 15 games with a 2.82 ERA.

Cliff Floyd had a career year.

The Mets were tied for the wild card lead on September 1st and proceeded to lose 16 of their next 19.

        • dannyb says:

They were a very young team at that point. David Wright was still batting 7th/8th.

People that blast Willie constantly on here just baffle me. I understand we don’t want to be happy with mediocrity. I must say though, it’s a helluva lot better than unwatchable. Under Art Howe, this team was unwatchable.

        • Mister Koo says:

I’ll give you that. Willie is much better than Art Howe. However, it didn’t help Howe’s cause that his starting lineup on a lot of days included Jason Phillips, Joe McEwing, Eric Valent, and Danny Garcia. If Willie had that lineup, he’d be unwatchable too.

    • MetsFansAreWhiners says:

      Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!

  12. neoncleon says:

If 2008 is a “rebuilding” year (i.e. we don’t decimate the farm and see what our kids really have) and we “merely” fight it out for the NL East championship….I could live with that.

    • Nate W. says:

      I’m with you to a certain extent…

Could you live with trading off Oliver Perez to build up the farm as he is in the last years of his deal? I could, its unlikely the Mets can sign him before he becomes a free agent, and at that point I would rather have Santana and Sabathia than OP. Of course they need to be able to fill his spot in the rotation and remain competitive, but I would just as well move forward on that situation than play out the string with OP and get nothing for him.

      • TBlz says:

why shouldn’t we be able to sign OP to a long-tem deal this year? he has it better in ny than he’s going to have it anywhere else…

        • Mister Koo says:

I agree. His intensity on the mound and antics are just made for this town. He’d be a fool to go anywhere else, and considering how much Omar loves him, I doubt he’d let him go.

Then again, his agent is Scott Boras, so anythings possible I guess.

  13. dannyb says:

Question…is this team in a better position than it was when he took over?

  14. SuperGrover says:

More hype on our prospects………..but nobody in the trading market wants him.

  15. hotrodkanehl says:

I agree that people seem to be undervaluing Blanton. He’s a 27 y.o. starter with low walks, good strikeout numbers and seems to be developing into a strong mid-rotation starter. i.e., Another Maine or Perez. Having three starters at that level is a lot better than our pitiful production from last year’s floating mix of #5 starters, and provides stability when El Duque goes down for a month or two along the way. Blanton has already proven he can do what seems like the potential upside top Pelfrey or Humber.
If we go into the season with Pedro and El Duque one throw away from the DL and Pelfrey in the $5 spot, we’ve got no backups and a to of 5 or 6 inning starts. That’s a recipe for another complete bullpen collapse in August and September.

  16. neoncleon says:

I think/hope OP is on the verge of putting it all together (again…ala 2004). Even if he falls short of that, and only spits the bit/freaks out every four starts….that’s alot of nastygood innings. We would be foolish not to resign him.

Yeah, if he doesn’t improve or regresses this year, we have missed out on trading him before Free Agency….but if he continues to improve, AND Boras doesn’t try to totally rape us (its always rape with Boras…I am just hoping for some lube)….ah, crap. As Willam Goldman said in Adventures in the Skin Trade (regarding Hollywood being able to predict a hit movie) NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING.

    Pitchers/Catchers can’t come soon enough

  17. 1DoggLJ says:

OK thanks for the breakdown on Mulvey, now lets trade his ass.

  18. MetFanInVegas says:

“It’s believed the Mets offered Gomez, two of their three best young pitchers (Mike Pelfrey, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey) and another prospect for Santana earlier this month. But according to one source who has spoken with the Mets, the Twins want the Mets “to rip up their whole farm system” for Santana.”

  19. MetFanInVegas says:

Another source said he believes the Twins countered by asking for all three pitchers, along with Gomez and much-ballyhooed outfield prospect Fernando Martinez. The Twins originally asked for Jose Reyes. But one baseball man with knowledge of those talks says that possibility was dismissed “a long time ago.”
