Buzz: Red Sox still Favorites for Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 28, 2007 12:02 pm

In today’s New York Post, Joel Sherman writes that the Red Sox remain the ‘strong favorite’ to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins.

According to Sherman, a) the Yankees are still unwilling to trade Phil Hughes and are reluctant to give Santana a six-year contract extension, while b) the Mets lag because Minnesota still wants to get back one or two players who can instantly contribute at the major-league level.

Therefore, Sherman concludes…

“For the Mets to land Santana, they would probably need these stars to align: a) The Twins feel they must deal their ace before spring training and, thus, take the best package available some time in the next six weeks; b) The Mets assemble a package that severely depletes their system, the Twins decide to accept volume as the key to the deal and neither the Red Sox nor the Yankees alter their offers.”

…again, as i have been saying, it’s all about hughes…if the Yankees will trade him, they’ll be able to acquire santana…now, whether they’ll pay him remains to be seen…on the other hand, if the Red Sox stay pat in their offer, the Mets are going to need to over do it, such as Carlos Gomez, maybe Fernando Martinez, and a variety of pitchers, which could include Aaron Heilman…this is why the Mets keep telling people they are ‘monitoring the situation,’ because there is nothing they can really do right now, short of including Jose Reyes, which is not an option…otherwise, Omar Minaya has no choice but to wait and see how the Yankees intend to behave…once that is decided, or the Twins get antsy, whichever happens first, it’s going to come down to whether the Twins want less players, who are more immediate (from Boston), or a lot of players (from the Mets) with high upsides who need more time to develop

are you sleeping or wishing we signed zito?

      • darkstar73 says:

if that’s what your wishing, that is a very sad statement…Zito? really? ugh…worst contract EVER.

        • dannyb says:

haha…i didn’t want zito, even for milledge at the deadline in ‘06. i could just see those “z” placards (not sure that should be plural in this case) hanging up at shea for his strikeouts.

PLEASE no more JOHAN Posts. When he is wearing our uniform post then!

    • dk70 says:

If the Yankees hold all of the cards right now, then it is going to stretch on for weeks. King Hank the Moron loves his power trips: “It is my decision only.” Jerk Off……

Don’t you get tired of cutting and pasting this? You forgot your most insightful points that the Mets will get Santana if 1) the Twins want him out of the AL, 2) Yanks won’t give up whoever, 3) Red Sox aren’t willing to give up whoever, 4) the Pope intervenes, 5) Red Sox sell their farm system to the Mets…

On a much less significant note, who cares about Clemens at this point? If the guy is so determined to convince everyone he is clean, go on Letterman and have them strap a lie detector on him.

    • anditsouttahere says:

If I were him I’d do Oprah instead.

      • Achilles400 says:

Good call. Or Barbara Walters so he can cry.

        • extrawhitemeat says:

Everyone knows Maury Povich is the kind of lie detector tets.. and he get some paternity tests while hes there too..

Gotta be some crack whore somewhere who will swear Clemmens is the father of her child?

      • dannyb says:

        Do Oprah? No thanks.

        • dannyb says:

Well, maybe in ‘94, not so much in ‘95. Maybe ‘96, but eh, not ‘98. Maybe again in ‘99, but no shot in ‘00. I think i would have done it before Thanksgiving ‘01, but not in ‘02. Possibly, if I was drunk in ‘04, but certainly not in ‘05. Maybe today. But only if it was in the middle of Gamecocks stadium.

  4. Charlie says:

The whole thing makes me sick to the point of not wanting Santana anymore.

What happens if the Mets unload the whole farm system, sign him to a 7 year, $150m contract and the guy blows out his arm?

It’s akin to trading a million draft picks and drafting and signing Eli Manning. A franchise set back for years and years.

    • Achilles400 says:

If you have issues with Eli, you should read that book written about Ernie Accorsi, GM, where the guy follows him around during his last year. There is a copy of his scouting report on Eli which basically says his problem in college was because of the bad team around him and how he would be better than Peyton. When you read it, it totally sounds like he was trying to convince himself. It does not reflect the real Eli (horrible and scared) at all.

      • Charlie says:

        Ouch.

        • dannyb says:

The guy has made the playoffs three straight years. Know how many teams in the NFL have done that?

I agree, he isn’t his brother, nor should you expect him to be. He isn’t a great quarterback. He isn’t even a really good quarterback. He is average. But you know what? It could take them 10 years to find a QB as good as he is. Look at all the teams that have been looking and had complete first round busts in the past 10 years.

Like it or not, he’ll be the QB for the very forseeable future. As well he should be. Was he worth a first round draft pick and a later pick that turned into Merriman and Nate Kaeding? No.

        • Charlie says:

okay, really, read the posts above. it’s all about what the giants PAID for this mediocre QB, who’s team makes the playoffs DESPITE his horrific play down the stretch.

      • points guy says:

Ernie Accorsi wanted to go out with a bang

  5. points guy says:

So I hear the Sox are the front runners for Johan.

    • gottabelieve07 says:

Actually, the Mets are still in the mix. You see, they can get him if A) the Twins trade him to the Mets, B) The Mets trade for Santana., C) The Twins don’t trade him to anyone but the Mets and D) No one else trades for Santana.

  6. Jaded1983 says:

This troubles me because we REALLY need a stable pitcher to add to the rotation. Santana would obviously be a great addition, but i fear the Mets will wait on him too long and ultimately lose the chance to get him and miss our opportunity to aquire Blanton as well.

  7. Jim says:

One more Santana post and I am changing my vote in the tournament!

  8. Jim says:

Wait let me get this straight, The TWINS are thinking of trading Santana? Crap, when did they decide that?

    • points guy says:

You’re a little late Jim, at 12:23:28 the Twinks changed their mind.

wait, wait. breaking news. The Twinks changed their mind again..

      rinse and repeat

Take a look at that write-up. I found it pretty interesting. It’s a comparison between Carlos Silva and Josh Towers. For all the people knocking down Josh Towers, he might very be a better pitcher than Silva, who was considered the best starting pitcher among the free agent market this offseason. Towers also obviously does not come at the commitment or price that Silva was given by any means.

  10. Why do the Red Sox feel the need to give up top prospects (that helped them win the World Series) and spend over $120 million on a pitcher, when they already have a number one ace and a pretty solid rotation including Dice-K, and young talent when you include Lester/Clay. I don’t get it. You’re already the best team in the game. I get the Yanks need Santana, I get WE need Santana more than anyone, but the Sox? I just don’t get it.

  11. metsfan227 says:

Can Minnesota really be so stupid as to actually trade Santana to a team they would have to face to get to the WS?

Are they just trying to help Boston/Yankees out?

  12. Using that logic the red sox would have gone:

We already have a clean-up hitter (Martinez) why do we need Ortiz?

    • Vinnie says:

      Ramirez?

        • extrawhitemeat says:

When they claimed Ortiz off waivers, they had NO idea he would be as good as he is…

So that analogy doesn’t make an ounce of sense..

I actually think Tina has a point.. but when you can get the best pitcher on the planet.. and their final offer isn’t really that mind blowing (which is why it’s not a done deal) and keep him away from the Yanks.. I would think that’s why they do it.

Ellsbury a nice player and all.. and his value will NEVER be higher.. but what is he really.. a defensive center fielder who can hit with limited power.

        • Not the same thing. Manny and Papi are a perfect fit for the Red Sox and a key to their success. It’s not like the Red Sox have a pleated rotation. They have youth, they have the veterans (and one more person that says Curt Schilling is done really has to take look back at the 07 playoffs - excluding the ALCS game2. I’m no Schilling fan, but he’s still good/solid 2-3 starter), and they have their big number one ace who will go out there and win that one game for you. So I really don’t think it makes a lot of sense to sell their farm for Johan when you can win without him.

        • Saying that santana wouldn’t help the red sox doesn’t make alot of sense.

With detroit’ strade the Red sox aren’t clearly the best team anymore. Santana could make them unbeatable

        • Sure, it would help - it would help any team; but it’s not worth it - giving up prospects AND spending that amount of money when they’re already proven winners. Trust me, Detroit is going to be amazing with adding the Marlin men - but Boston is still the favorite in AL.

  13. thxss extrawhitemeat. and if i’m the twins, i demand ellsbury and lester. NOT ellsbury/coco crisp as rumored.

Joel Sherman is usually full of crap. In this case, he’s just repeating everything we’ve known for the last month and a half.

  15. m00kie says:

well at least that thread was about 60/40 in the ratio of funny posts to don’t-post-about-santana posts….

I’d much rather read sarcasm than whining.

Please, if you don’t like the santana posts, don’t read them. They will not stop until the trade is made. If that’s a problem, go outside, read a book, or do something besides hitting refresh

whining about whining about whining about whining about whining

Oh Yeah! I almost want to go back to work ;)

  16. Kalihan42 says:

As much as i want to see Santana in a Mets uniform I am starting to think it is not worth all of our prospects AND a ridiculously long 6-7 year deal.

I remember one pitcher who was considered a stud like Santana. He got a big [payday contract and ended up on the Dodgers and the Yankees. He was paid out big dollars and ended up either hurt or underperforming for most of his contract.

I am not saying this is comparable to Santana, but I do hesitate at this point . If it is just the money and years maybe, just the prospects, maybe but both…I just don’t want to end up regreting this…
