Buzz: The Mets and the Pitcher’s Market
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 31, 2007 11:27 am

MLB Offices are closed through January 2…my sense is that the off-season may pick up steam again during the middle of this month, since pitchers and catchers will be only four weeks away from reporting at that point…

…from what i can gather, the Mets remain oddly confident regarding their talks with the Twins about Johan Santana…the thing is, not much has changed on that front…which, frankly, i view as a good thing…

…at any rate, the buzz around shea continues to suggest that the Mets have interest in Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon…frankly, i sense they’ll end up signing one of the two starting pitchers to a one-year deal, because it only makes sense from a risk-reward stand point…colon, by the way, is getting a lot of good reviews while pitching in the Dominican Winter League

Colon, who has been battling shoulder and elbow problems since 2006, has a career record of 146-95 and a 4.10 ERA in 306 starts.

the buzz during the Winter Meetings had been that the Mets were the front runners for garcia, but were holding back until they knew how best to proceed in the trade market…

Garcia, 32, is rehabbing from shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff and should be ready to pitch by midseason.

During his nine-year career, he is 117-76 and has a 4.07 ERA – though he was just 1–5 last season for the Phillies.

…i also sense that the Mets continue to have strong interest in Octavio Dotel, but that may depend more on the future of Aaron Heilman than anything else…additionally, i feel any reported interest in Kyle Lohse and Livan Hernandez may be severely overblown, unless one of the two pitchers is willing to accept much less of a commitment than they’re demanding…

…lastly, there is not much of a buzz in Oakland connecting the Mets to Joe Blantonhonestly, it seems like the mini-market for pitchers, such as colon, garcia, blanton, etc, are all more or less waiting on Johan Santana

We are all waiting on Johan Santana. Johan Santana is ruining my life.

  2. PepsiPowerPatrol says:

A Santana trade and a flyer on Garcia would be nice….

  3. mlbkings says:

Now if Garcia were to sign, would he be ready opening day?

    • PepsiPowerPatrol says:

      no, mid-season.

    • Meddler says:

Exactly why I’d prefer Colon. He already has a relationship with Omar, if he’d take a slightly more expensive one year deal (obviously Garcia would still be significantly cheaper since he’d be prorated), I’d jump on it. He’ll be ready opening day. He’s already pitching in the winter league.

  4. jerseymetsfan says:

sign dotel, colon and garcia we have nothing to lose and can much needed depth, even if we end up for trading for you know who.

    Hello all,
I’m on vacation from bashing The Wilpons, Minaya and Randolph. God knows I needed a break from the team that keeps on giving, ulcers that is.
I did however want to take a minute to thank Matt Cerrone for his efforts on this great site. While I might not agree with everyone’s opinion, I do realize we all enjoy the debate on how to make our team the ultimate powerhouse. It has been one of my passions since I was a kid.
Best wishes for a Happy and Healthly New Year all!
    Lets Go Mets!

    The Year 2007;
On a scale of “not good” to “good”

    NY Mets = not good

    Metsblog = good

Thanks for the dedicated work keeping the site current and information up to date.

    Here’s a T-Shirt for Matt and his whole staff….Bang!

    • dannyb says:

      PepsiPowerPatrol,
      That was some funny $hite.

I have a question for you. I’m sure all the Metsbloggers out there are curious as well. Do you always aim for hot chicks in low cut tank tops and try to make them jump?

I would more inclined to sign Colon to Garcia, I see Colon’s upside being a lot greater than Garcia’s. Colon used to be a top notch pitcher until he got hurt due to physical condition and Garcia has always been a decent pitcher with arm problems due to mechanics. I would always take the upside, considering Garcia wont return until mid season also.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I agree. to me colon is the better option since he can pitch from the get go and has that potential to be a good starting pitcher that can go deep into games.

    • points guy says:

Garcia always had arm problems b/c he dropped the “People’s Elbow” from a slightly inclined angle.

      • mikey_FF says:

Yo points guy, you should get some t-shirts made. Blue shirts with an orange “+10″ on the front. Then get the Pepsi Power Patrol to launch them for you.

      • dannyb says:

        “The People’s Elbow”

Booker T? From Harlem Heat. Perhaps the greatest tag team name ever. Sounds like a porn.

        • squad says:

The People’s Elbow was the Rock’s move.

        • dannyb says:

Ah…I’m living in the days of NWO Hollywood and Wolfpack. I was a WWF fan back in the day, but not in the days of the Rock or Stone Cold. Think they are garbage compared to Flair, Hollywood Hogan, Nash, Hall (when he had his “drinking problem), Conan, and Giant.

        • m00kie says:

don’t forget superfly snuka, the Junkyard Dog, Hacksaw Jim Duggan (HOOOO!!!) and hillbilly jim! Not to mention the great villains back then, Nikolai Volkov, The Iron Sheik, and the Million Dollar Man!

I actually sat ringside at a tag team match between Hulk Hogan and Hillbilly Jim vs. Volkov and the Iron Sheikh…
Volkov sang the USSR national anthem while we booed, and then Hogan came out to the best intro song ever:

I am a real American, fight for the rights of every man LOL

        • gottabelieve07 says:

Don’t forget Ricky The Dragon Steamboat, Hercules, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, Rowdy Roddy Piper, George the Animal Steel, Koko B Ware, The Pan Am Connection and other long since forgotten minor wrestling heros.

Other favorite vminor illaims included Adrian Adonis, Ravishing Rick Rude and anybody managed by Ted Dibiasi in the mid to late 80s!

  8. dannyb says:

    Almost forgot….

    Fire Isiah!!! Fire Isiah!!!!

    • WVMetsFan says:

Screw the Nets….you wanna talk BASKETBALL go to that blog/website…..wanna talk Mets and Baseball then stay here!

      Go METS!!!!!

  9. You should start supporting the NJNets

    • dannyb says:

Hmm, who should I cheer for? A coach that doesn’t deserve to have a job (even in TV) or a player who doesn’t want to be on the team that he is on, fakes migranes, and beats his soon to be ex? Tough call.

I choose the Knicks because a chant of “Fire Isiah!” is much better than “Beat your wife, Jason, beat your wife”. Especially, because as an Islanders fan, I heard that from the Rangers about Potvin.

      • I see you conveniantly left out all the stuff Isiah is doing to female employees.

Once the nets move to Brooklyn knick fans will convert because just look at the travesty they call a team playing at the garden

        • dannyb says:

It doesn’t matter what he’s doing to female employees though. He didn’t get fired for it? Who cares?

Maybe he needs to find an ethnic or religious group to persecute? Think that’ll get the job done? We all know Marbury is here to stay though, because as we well know he “has so much $hit on Isiah and Dolan”.

    • WVMetsFan says:

And I will say it again……….

Screw the Nets….you wanna talk BASKETBALL go to that blog/website…..wanna talk Mets and Baseball then stay here!

      Go METS!!!!!

  10. I would try and put together a trade to San Fran. Put together a pacage similar to what we are offering for santana and try and get cain. They have no hitters so throw in Delgado, and then sign a mediocre 1st baeman.

Or try and get lowry for a lower price

    • dannyb says:

Problem is Cain isn’t nearly as good as Santana. Not to be nitpicky either, but we kinda need a lefty starter. I’d shoot for Lowry over Cain. Need someone to neutralize the Phillies lefty bats.

Maybe they could also give Reyes some practice taking his leads against lefties. How many times was he picked off by a lefty this year? Had to be at least 7.

      • Meddler says:

No thanks on pitchers with K/BB of 1.00, and Cain just isn’t realistic. The only trade rumor he’s been involved in thus far has been Alex Rios, and the Mets just don’t have anyone who stacks up.

  11. seth1280 says:

    This was on Rotoworld.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Scott Kazmir “doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to sign a long-term deal.”

The newspaper goes on to suggest that “there’s already talk that Scott Kazmir’s days as a Ray are numbered,” which seems more than a bit hyperbolic given that he’s arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason and thus under Tampa Bay’s control for three more years.

    Now comes the Kazmir rumors….

We can all do a renditon of Welcome Back.

  12. JavaJoe says:

Well that’s a welcomed break from the Santana rumors. Bring back Kazmir.

Let it go, man…let it go.

If it wasn’t for that trade we would not have Omar. No Maine, no Perez.

Really who knows how Kazmir would have handled being thrown into the boiling pot.

    • dannyb says:

When is it a smart baseball decision to trade a LHP that throws in the mid-upper 90’s?

At worst, he had potential to be a dominant closer (Billy Wagner of the past?).

    • Saltzy23 says:

Ummm…..yea. Glad we traded Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi as well. Who knows how Ryan would have fared in NYC…

  13. thats why met fans should be glad to have Omar. He didn’t trade Reyes or Wright and it sounds like he won’t trade Fernando Martinez who sounds like a great hitter

  14. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

i have no enthusiasm for the coming season. this team will be awful and boring…go ahead hypers.. start the rah rah rah chant

  15. Go Bro says:

Glad to see that someone out there still thinks that without Omar we wouldn’t have two young 15 win pitchers still on the team. So now if he can get Johan and keep FMart it would be a wonderful start to 2008.
    In Omar we trust!!!
