Buzz: Royals and Bartolo Colon
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 2, 2008 10:08 pm

According to Impacto Deportivo, the Royals may be close to signing free-agent RHP Bartolo Colon.

…thanks to Steve W for the link

…from what i could gather, the Mets had interest in colon, and even checked in on him while he pitched in the Dominican Winter League, but there is no indication their interest went any further than that - even though colon was said to have been performing quite well this winter

assuming this link is accurate - and, frankly, i am always reluctant to totally bank on these google translations - then good for the Royals, because i think colon may be a nice gamble

Colon, who has been battling shoulder and elbow problems since 2006, has a career record of 146-95 and a 4.10 ERA in 306 starts.

…however, if the Royals give him a guaranteed roster spot, i will understand why he did not end up on the Mets - because, frankly, i’m not sure the Mets need to lock in a spot with a guy like colon right now…if he ends up signing a multi-year deal, as MLB.com once suggested he is seeking, not bringing him to queens will make even more sense…

…he is worth inviting to camp, which is certainly his second choice, but i have no interest in getting more bogged down in players who are clearly on the back nine of a career…

…nevertheless, the buzz during the Winter Meetings had been that the Mets were the front runners for free-agent RHP Freddy Garcia, who will not be ready to pitch in a major-league game until mid-summer…

Garcia, 32, is rehabbing from shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff and should be ready to pitch by midseason.

During his nine-year career, he is 117-76 and has a 4.07 ERA – though he was just 1–5 last season for the Phillies.

…as i wrote last week, the i sense i got is that the Mets would end up signing one of these two starting pitchers to a one-year deal, or a similar pitcher like them, because it only makes sense from a risk-reward stand point…of course, that’s assuming they end up in a position in which they need to take that risk…

Thought for sure we were getting him

    • REYESBNASTY says:

We should def swoop in and pick up Colon – what u hear now is that as projects we are looking at Colon or Garcia and Garcia isnt even going to pitch for half the season – If we go w/ what we have Colon would be a nice possibilty for the back end of the rotation. And 1 year commitment is huge.

Royals = the New Evil Empire.

  2. Steal Home Jose! says:

Who do these Royals think they are?

Might be time for Reggie Sanders to come out of retirement.

  3. thestache says:

We were also “close” to Erick Bedard, I’ll believe it when I see it

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I thought we were close to him too, until I found out that an ESPN Reporter was the one who reported it…

    • anditsouttahere says:

yeah but the mets being close and someone else being close is two different things. we dont close deals. other teams do. first, haren was the backup if we didnt get santana, then it was colon, now it’ll be garcia, then santana wont get dealt and we’ll be afraid to commit to garcia and we will end up with no one. get used to this.

      • gbaked says:

haren was the backup? The dude is a stud. He was your backup, but not for a bunch of other teams.

we didnt have the players to get haren.

giving the farm for him would have been a bad move.

dropping out of the santana race that early would have been a bad move.

the a’s got a haul for him, so again, we didnt have the players.

Not many teams have a realistic shot at trade-clause/free agent santana, we shouldn’t pass it up.

  4. extrawhitemeat says:

Guys relax.. opening day is still 13 weeks away, right Matt?

We have plenty of time to not upgrade this team

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Are you actually complaining that we aren’t going after mediocre prospects?

Fact: The sooner the Mets make a deal, the more they get ripped off.

Fiction: When making trades, the sooner the better.

      Prediction:
      Carlos Gomez
      Aaron Heilman
      Kevin Mulvey
      Philip Humber

      for

      Johan Santana

This deal is the one I see getting done. It’s very similar to the Haren deal. Three prospects of high value to the “receiving team,” one mid-level prospects and one lower level prospect. Of course, the A’s also recieved Dana Eveland… But, come on, Dana Eveland?

Based on my own judgement, John Sickel’s judgement, and Bill Smith’s judgement:

      Red Sox offer:
Jed Lowrie B+ (Sickels loves him, Smith is obviously indifferent, I don’t think of him as highly as Sickels.)
      Jon Lester B+
      Justin Masterson B
Coco Crisp C+ (He had a good first 1000 AB)

      What Twins want from Yankees:
Philip Hughes A- (Injury brings him down from A)
Melky Cabrera B (decent speed, great glove, marginal MLB success)
      Jeff Marquez C+
      Mitch Hilligoss C

      D’Backs deal for Haren:
      Brett Anderson B+
Carlos Gonzalez B+ (Top 50 prospect)
      Chris Carter B+
      Aaron Cunningham B-
      Greg Smith C+
      Dana Eveland C-

      My prediction:

Carlos Gomez B+ (Smith freakin’ loves the guy, and his AAA performance was very good.)
Aaron Heilman B+ (could be a B, they have Neshek, Guerrier & Nathan)
      Kevin Mulvey B (MLB ready)
      Philip Humber B-

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Subtract the “one lower level prospect.”

      • extrawhitemeat says:

So basically you subscribe to the Johan or bust idea of this off-season?

No matter how likely or unlikely you think the deal is.. at best it’s probably a 33% something chance… that’s what you’re saying.. Johan or nothing..

If that is the case.. yes I am complaining.. that we continue to ignore every option.. except to chase Johan.

By the time the dust settles on the Johan deal.. there will be no Plan Bs…

      • MealTicket says:

Sounds good to me. It would be painful, but not devastating. Whatever the final outcome, it will be something like this, I think.

The Twins’ fantasy of taking some team to the cleaners for ALL its best prospects is just not going to pan out. Yes, he’s the top pitcher in baseball, but the Twins can only offer him at a reasonable price for one year. It’s not Cabrera and Willis, for instance, both of whom were under contract for two-plus more seasons.

      • 7-train says:

You’re giving Jon Lester and Aaron Heilman the same rating? Seriously?

        • ravi3 says:

At this point Heilman is a proven commodity..Lester has performed in small sample sizes, but still is a bit of a wild card…upside is obviously higher than Heilman, but the downside is worse.

      • Charlie says:

What do you know? Really. Not trying to be a jerk. But, can you honestly say you can access big league talent? Are you a scout? Do you have any credentials that should tell me to take your ratings seriously?

        Lester = Heilman? No.
        Mulvey is MLB ready? No.
Gomez > Crisp? Even though Crisp has a .280 average over six seasons and Gomez has played 58 games?

Is this some kind of joke?

      • gbaked says:

he didnt pull these letter grades out of thin air. We have seen them all over the internet from many “experts” and scouts.

Yes they should be taken with a grain of salt, but still… our prospects are not that good. And Heilman has been one of the better relief pitchers in the game the past couple years.

His loss would be the toughest to take.

        • gbaked says:

opps… our prospects are not that bad (is that a Freudian slip?)

        • ridethesnake says:

extrawhitemeat is the same guy who probably laughed when suggested that our top 4 MVP 3bman would eventally hit .325 with 30 HRs back in early May.

He truly believes if we don’t have any new players now, we will have no new players later.

You can’t reach the internet age children these days with reality.

        • extrawhitemeat says:

Wow.. I actually have had a BA subscription for 3 years and probably read more articles on our farm club then 90% of this board..

I also never made a single coment on the grades above.. even though I find them laughable at best.

My only arugment was the Johan or bust philosophy.. no matter what reality you think you live in that I don’t.. the chances of the Mets getting Johan are around 30% at best..

So.. if the entire off season plan is take that 30% chance.. and that’s it.. and ignore other options like we have.. that is what my post said…

I have followed Wright’s career since he was drafted.. since he turned down an offer at Georige Tech to take Texiera’s place… to his first big season in AA ball..

So do me a favor and take your head out of your a** before you post something about me next time

  5. The Glider says:

This could be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes the best signings are the ones you don’t make.

    • extrawhitemeat says:

in that case.. we’re having the best off season ever!!

      • The Glider says:

Touche! So, who out that mangy group of reclamation projects would you like the Mets to sign? Or would you prefer to bring back Jose Lima?

        • extrawhitemeat says:

I would of welcomed signings elsewhere on the team this offseason, but as far as pitchers go I really thought Omar’s ties to Colon would bring him here..

    • gottabelieve07 says:

I’m not as down on the Mets for the offseason thus far, but I’d be upset if they passed up on Colon (especially with some news that he appears healthy again) and lost out to the Royals. With all due respect to the Royals, they should not be able to outbid the Mets when it comes to signing a FA pitcher.

Colon would give the Mets depth in the rotation, and flexibility to trade some of the younger arms for another starter. Signing him would also remove the stigma of needing Santana, and replace it with the luxury of wanting him.

Conversely, once Colon comes off the market, there’s not much else out there in terms of starting pitching. The ability to add depth will fade. And the shroud of desperation around this team’s pitching staff will grow – the price of Santana may grow with it.

Signing Colon seems like a real minimal risk, high reward move for the Mets. There’s no logical baseball reason to not bring him in.

      • Number41 says:

        BBQ’s better in KC….

      • ravi3 says:

I think that Omar is correct not to guarantee Colon a roster spot or a multi-year deal…Its not a smart move.

        • yagottabelieve says:

I disagree. Not to repeat my full post from below but there is no such thing as a “guaranteed roster spot”. You may have to give him a “guaranteed contract”, meaning you have to pay him even if you release him outright. But if he’s hurt, you can always put him on the DL, and if he stinks, you can always release him and eat the money (see Franco, Julio).

Offer him one year at 8 million. If he pitches 180 innings with an ERA under 4.00, he automatically gets two more years at 25 million. If not, we can let him go if we want to.

What do we have to lose?

        • ravi3 says:

its not a fiscally sound plan. The Wilpons aren’t just going to go and throw around money – we both know that. Plus every dollar spent gets us closer to the luxury tax, especially with rising salaries of Reyes/Wright/Beltran. Plus, they are going to paying out quite a sum in next years offseason replacing guys like Pedro and Delgado.

        • yagottabelieve says:

I hear what you’re saying. But if he proves himself to be the Bartolo Colon of old, then it IS fiscally sound – you’d be getting a Cy Young winner for the cost of Carlos Silva. If he doesn’t, you’ve wasted $8 million (the cost of two seasons of Jose Valentin) on a one-year gamble that, to me, seems very worthwhile.

  6. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Man! I wanted him as our 5th starter. He won the Cy Young only 2 years ago. Would have been great signings especially if we get Santana and didnt need to count on him. Oh well. We better get Santana Omar.

  7. icedrake523 says:

There go our World Series hopes…

  8. Who are the Royals? I thought they were dismantled after 1980. Amos Otis, OH YEAH!

  9. Blue_n_Orange says:

man, are we doing anything this offseason or are we supposed to be satisfied with the castillo signing. oh well, go islanders.

    • ridethesnake says:

Ah, Islanders fans. Now i see where the impatient posts come from.

      • DaveSchneck says:

Unlike Rags fans, who, as we all know, are the most patient fans on earth(insert laugh track here).

      • gomets6091 says:

how can you call Islanders fans impatient? Our goalie got signed to a 74 year contract, and we’re hoping by the end of it he might get us back to the second round of the playoffs! That’s the definition of patience…

  10. BlueTrane says:

    Bravo Royals, Bravo indeed…

I think its great to see the Royals actually improving their team.

  11. MetsFan21 says:

It’s about time the Royals have begun to spend money on their roster after like 10 years of collecting welfare checks from the Yankees and every other team that paid the “luxury tax” throughout all those years… boy the Royals finally did something that didn’t come under the threat of contraction.

Can’t picture Colon signing with the Royals unless it is because of (a) money and (b) the desire to remain in the AL.

    • bobhamelin says:

It’s not 100% confirmed we got Colon. But keep in mind a couple of things. One we DO have the money to spend..but don’t think for an instant its over “luxury tax”. The Yankees and Red Sox are the only teams to pay a luxury tax, and other teams don’t benefit. It’s from revenue sharing, and you are right. Our owner sat around and collected ‘welfare’. But things have changed. We have a new GM and the owner wants to spend his welfare money. Fine by us..it’s about time.

But to bash a small market team? Come on Mets fans. You are better than that. We are KC, what threat are we to you guys? We have been in on every FA it seems, and we miss out on Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter ..Silva and Kuroda. Colon is not exactly CC Sabathia or Erik Bedard…but the guy pitched almost his entire career in the AL Central. He knows the teams. If he wants to come back to the AL Central, we welcome him with open arms. He could only make our team stronger, with a catcher he is familiar with. On the Met’s, he’d be your 5th starter, am I right?

Not saying you HAVE to show the Royals some respect, but its hard to try to regain MLB fans respect when we are trashed at every signing!

      Good luck in 08!

  12. ExileInLA says:

I love those automatic translations — especially Melky Cabrera as “regular gardener Central” in 2008…

but Mets fans should be happy to learn that Reyes isn’t playing:

Omar Minaya does not forgive; He again denied permission to play Jose Reyes

    Omar Minaya Omar Minaya

The torpedero Jose Reyes is eager to play with the Cibao Giants and thus swell the list of stellar grandesligas have been integrated in recent days to the Dominican winter league baseball.

However, the general manager of the New York Mets, the Dominican Omar Minaya, did not share the same enthusiasm and with a simple word ended with the aspirations of Kings.

“No,” said Minaya to ESPNdeportes.com this Sunday, through an e-mail, responding to the question of whether the Mets would give permission for Reyes to play in their country.

“It is regrettable that happen, Jose is really excited about playing and this is a sign of that Sunday practice with the team,” said Eddy Toledo, Giants general manager of the Dominicans.

Toledo, who for 26 years was the representative of the Mets in the Dominican Republic, discovered and signed to Kings in 1999. Two years ago and then went on to work for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Although Toledo is not abundant in this regard, it is widely known that in its relations with Dominican Minaya were quite deteriorated following the departure of the first of the organization from New York.

Reyes played four seasons with the Giants, but did not return to the league quisqueyana after 2005, when it was established as a regular torpedero the Mets.

Reyes, 24 years old, has been selected in the team opener of the National League for the Game Stars of Major League for two years in a row and has been stolen 60 or more bases in the past three seasons.

“Here the important thing is that a great player like Jose Reyes will not be able to play in front of family and friends, as has dreamed since he became a star,” said Toledo.

While the Giants failed to integrate Reyes, their regional rivals, Aguilas Cibaenas, got permission to use the torpedero Miguel Tejada and Inserted in their rotation abridora law Bartolo Colon.

Las Estrellas Orientales lost to intermedista Robinson Canó, as decided by the New York Yankees, but added law Daniel Cabrera, who fired six blank entries and won in his debut on Saturday.

And the Licey Tigers, who are on its payroll to players of the caliber of gardeners Jose Guillen and Jose Bautista, intermedista Ron Belliard and pitchers Ramon Ortiz, Damaso Marte and Jorge Sosa are trained to torpedo Hanley Ramirez and Cristian Guzman and inicialista Carlos Pena.

  13. firemetmanagement says:

I wish Wilpon spent money like the Royals.

  14. firemetmanagement says:

Don’t forget the Mets cheaped out on Prior too- that is the kind of move a supposed BIG MARKET TEAM makes….Aka overpay him and hope that the reward outweighs the risk. If it had panned out and he got himself healthy by July/August, we’d have a big pitcher for the playoffs. If it didn’t pan out, all we would have lost was 2 or 3 million. Pocket change for big market teams like the NYY or Red Sox, but not for Freddie Coupons.

    • The Glider says:

Do really know that? I heard that we did make a better offer to Prior than SD did. He lives year round in SD. So, I don’t think it was because we refused to make a better offer. I just think Prior wanted the least amount of distractions this year while trying to get his career back on track. And he only signed a 1 year deal. He wants to show he’s healthy, then he’ll declare himself a FA and test the market – at least, I think, that’s his plan.

As for a 5th starter, again (sorry for being redundant), but I think Heilman is a much better option than Colon . . . or L.Hernandez, or B Colon. It’s time to give this guy a chance. Yes, he only has two pitches, but so does Johann (the same two, too).

    • PDubs says:

You have no idea what you’re talking about! The Mets offered more guaranteed money, but Prior wanted to go to San Diego. Less pressure and the best pitching park in the majors. It will make his numbers look much better.

You are the worst poster on here. I’m really gonna stop coming to this site because of you. I’ve never heard you say one positive thing. Your act is so tired.

Why don’t you start your own blog? ImAJadedBitterPessimisticBastardBlog.com

You need to stop coming to this site and don’t even bother going to Shea. I don’t want people like you sitting in the stands next to me when we clinch the NL East.

      • The Glider says:

Thanks for the back-up. I thought we offered him more money.

And don’t let guys like him make you quit the site.

      • ridethesnake says:

Prior did take less to go home.

And I agree, this is my last ever post and probably my last visit to metsblog.com due largely in part to firemetsmanagement and posters like him. I can’t take the ignorance anymore from some of these children, and frankly, the blog itself is just Cerrone making posts too about information I already knew. I have a feeling I am not the only one disappointed with the direction of this place, and I feel bad for Matt, though he is not entirely blameless.

Thanks for the brief interest, but this right here is my last visit.

wow, so glad there are actually intelligent, positive Mets fans out there. I used to love visiting this site and having intelligent conversations with Mets fans, but ever since the collapse, it seems like all the good fans have left and have been replaced by bitter, negative and extremely annoying “fans.” Maybe when the season starts up again, and the Mets exceed everyone’s expectations the good people will start coming back to this site.

  15. Gilch says:

i hate this guy … that being said … i kinda got over my hatred, and was ready to see him in a met uni …. but no…. talk about putting all your eggs in one basket … do or die, omar get us johan …

  16. Wow. We lose out to the Royals? This is getting bad people, getting pretty bad!

I’m not the biggest Colon fan in the world and didn’t know how much interest we had in him, but with his connection to Omar.. Oh well.

    • PDubs says:

I’d take any baseball reporting with a grain of salt. How many reports have we heard that have been way off? Look at the Dan Haren trade, no one even had a clue about the A’s and the D’Backs hooking up.

Also consider that the Royals might be doing something ridiculous like giving Colon a 2-year/$15 million deal.

Would you want the Mets handing over to that slob? Colon has serious weight problems and a bum shoulder. He was getting lit up in a good pitchers park last year in Anaheim.

I’ll take the wait and see position.

  17. yagottabelieve says:

if the Royals give him a guaranteed roster spot, i will understand why he did not end up on the Mets – because, frankly, i’m not sure the Mets need to lock in a spot with a guy like colon right now

Matt, I’ve always admired your ability to keep a clear head and not overreact, but I don’t follow this argument at all.

There’s no such thing as a “guaranteed roster spot.” if Colon’s not healthy, you put him on the DL. If he stinks up the joint, you release him outright. Either way, all you lose is money.

It’s not like there would be a clause in Colon’s contract that says “ballclub agrees to let player pitch every fifth day ad infinitum regardless of said player’s performance.”

Yes, you have to create a spot on the 40-man roster for him right now – which means we could risk losing Jason Vargas or Brian Stokes – but who cares? The guy is worth the risk and we have the money. It’s the freakin’ Royals – outbid them!

  18. yagottabelieve says:

Oops, couldn’t seem to get the italics to end there (Imagine they stop after the first paragraph).

    Sorry about that…

  19. QnsNative718 says:

  21. TugTheMan says:

I really can’t believe that there are so many posts about not signing Colon. Believe me I am just as upset as anyone with the lack of activity this off season, but getting upset about an over weight, injury prone pitcher who most likely is demanding more than he’s worth is nonsense.

Let’s be real there were very few, if any, pitcher to take a chance on. With the rotation as is right this moment Colon would not help and maybe set it a back a bit.

    1)Pedro, 2)Maine, 3)Ollie, 4)Duque & 5)Pelfrey/Humber/Mulvey.

By signing a guy like Colon would mean that one of the kids would be in AAA and not seeing what he’s got. Or moving Duque to the pen which I can’t see him agreeing to and then requesting a trade and the whole back page b.s.

I would rather start the season with what we have as opposed to having Colon, Silva, Prior, etc. However the one guy I would sign now is Garcia since he wouldnt be ready til mid-season and at which point it would like a mid season signing or set up for a deadline trade.

Also I would be a bit careful on trading too many pitching prospects for Johan. Pedro may not pitch past ‘08/’09, Duque shouldn’t pitch past ‘08, so there’ll be a need for a pitcher (or two) and the way market has been its almost better to grow them through the farm. I’d love to see Johan pitch w/the mets but worried about ‘09 +
