Quote: Francesa, Reyes, Johan and Minaya
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 3, 2008 3:07 pm

During a discussion on WFAN a few moments ago, host Mike Francesa said the following…

“I spoke to Omar Minaya yesterday, and one thing you can take to the bank is that when we get to spring training Jose Reyes will be there - anything else you hear is nonsense.  And they have not backed off Reyes, the Twins are still asking for Reyes, they are at a stalemate with the Mets over Reyes.”

of course, francesa doesn’t say whether omar is the source for him knowing that the Twins continue to insist on reyes - though he certainly makes it seem that way …if omar is the source, i find it very, very odd that he would leak that sort of information on record to a radio show…unless it’s deliberate, which is equally as uncharacteristic

For what it’s worth, in a recent report for ESPN.com, citing ‘one source with knowledge of the discussion,’ Jayson Stark wrote, while the Twins originally asked for Reyes, that possibility was dismissed ‘a long time ago.’

Also, last week at his blog for the Star-Tribune, La Velle E. Neal III wrote that the Mets remain a ‘viable destination’ for Santana, while adding, ‘The Twins like enough of their players that a deal could be worked out without Reyes being part of the package.’

Has Francesca ever said anything insightful or even useful in his career – ever?

  2. napes22 says:

When’s the last time Francesa didn’t make something up. This guy’s unreal.

  3. cousinrk says:

Francesa is close to Omar, and has constantly mentioned talking to Omar, so It does make some sense. But we all know he’s such an egomaniac and has embellished things before, so Omar could have said “no comment” and Mike took that to mean Reyes is off the blocks.

francessca likes to pretend he knows everything. i remember when mota was said to come back from his suspinsion for like 10 minutes francessca said “i heard from the horses mouth, hes almost ready” HORSES MOUTH HORSES MOUTH. no way omar said whats above to mike francessca

    • ravi3 says:

agreed…If Omar has shown us anything over the past few years its that he plays his cards close to vest. There have never been any leaked trade talks for trades that happened or were being seriously discussed. Omar r uns a tight ship in that regard. I don’t see why he would deviate from that now. Plus, he has publicly been stating that Reyes will not go anywhere, and Minnesota GM Bill Smith is certainly so dense that he is not aware of this.

  5. SheaVendor says:

Omar: Takes a sip of his morning coffee and thinks, “I have to call my good buddy Mike Francesa over at FAN and let him know how things are going in the Johan Santana talks…”

Francesa that same morning: “I wonder if my good buddy Omar will call and let me know how things are going in the Johan Santana talks…”

I’m telling you, it’s like “Radar Love”

    Francessa is an ass hat

    • thats true but he is entertaining. Thats why everyone including you listens to mike and the mad dog instead of espn radio

      • points guy says:

        -3

i don’t listen to him; in fact, you can put a bunch of deaf mutes on at those hours and people will listen.

        • just admit it: mike and the angry puppy are #1

there are other sports radio stations. and yet mike and the mad dog get astronomical ratings

        • Mexworshipper says:

No, there are no other sports stations. I think it is ridiculous that NYC, the metropolis of the world has only two sports stations, and only one is full-time local sports.

  7. MealTicket says:

If anyone cares, I decided to crunch some numbers in an unscientific fashion to see what kind of draft-pick players the Twins would be in line to get if they hold onto Johan until free agency next year.

I arbitrarily decided they’d receive the 27th and 36th players in the draft. Obviously, the margin for error is extremely large. But let’s just use it as a basis for comparison.

Of the 14 players chosen 27th or 36th since 1999, most are unfamiliar to me. They include:

    David Walling
    Rafael Freeman
    Robert Stiehl
    Sergio Santos
    Michael Garciaparra
    Chad Blasko
    Daniel Putnam

And the ones whose names I recognize:

    Alan Horne
    Eric Duncan
    Jerrold Saltalamacchia
    Taylor Tankersley
    Joe Devine
    Travis Buck

The name missing, the 36th pick of 2000, I couldn’t find on MLB.com.

Memo to Bill Smith: Trade Johan to the Mets. Better accumulate 4 or 5 real prospects than risk the total crapshoot that is the MLB amateur draft.

  8. cousinrk says:

Yeah but hasn’t Omar basically said Reyes is untouchable. So what exactly is he keeping close to the vest? He’s not hiding the fact that Reyes is off the market, he’s come out and said it.

Francesa basically is just confirming what Omar has said, and pretending as if its a major scoop, which is isn’t.

  9. professor met says:

Look at this! A santana post has been up for almost half an hour and only 7 comments! We are worn out.

  10. FBones24 says:

“And they have not backed off Reyes, the Twins are still asking for Reyes, they are at a stalemate with the Mets over Reyes.”

I used to like Mike and the Mad Dog because they were entertaining; however, I think the success of their show has gone to their collective heads. They are seriously ridiculous and talk so much trash it is unbelievable.

There is no way in hell the Mets trade Reyes for anyone. Why would Reyes even be in the discussion with the Twins when the Yankees are offering Cabrera/Hughes and the Sox are offering Crisp/Lester. Reyes is arguably on his way to being the best all around player in baseball someday.

Francesa had a dream he talked to Omar. Then he woke up with his face planted in a big bowl of baked ravioli’s from the night before. He looked up and saw a highlight film of Jose stealing crazy bases and he decided what he was going to talk about that day.

    • dannyb says:

The crazy thing is the Yanks are “allowed” to keep Joba off the market, but the Twins insist on Reyes being in the discussion.

If I was Cashman/Hankenstein, I would trade Joba before Hughes. Joba’s value will never be higher. They still don’t know how he will react to being thrown in the rotation. Think about it, if you can get one of the best starting pitchers in the game for a guy that has never started a major league game in his life, but has shown to be dominant in only a one inning set up role, would you do it?

I really hope the Yanks aren’t stalling so they could hold their best hand and make the Twins feel like they have been blown away with an offer of Joba/Melky, and a lower level prospect. I think that would be a complete pillaging of the Twins organization.

      • the ynks have hughs.
our best pitching prospect is ………

        • points guy says:

our best pitching prospect is, Johan Santana

        • dannyb says:

I understand the Yanks have Hughes. But even still, Reyes is a much more proven commodity than Hughes is. Hughes has never won 15 games, but Reyes has stolen 70 bases.

Reyes should have a gold glove under his belt. Reyes is one of the most dangerous leadoff men in the game.

Hughes MIGHT be all this (in pitching terms). That’s not equal value. Hughes was impressive and equally unimpressive in starts last year.

        • dannyb says:

          Points Guy,

Is this the faux Johan Santana that one poster suggested we sign somewhere in Venezuela so we can say we got Johan Santana?

        • my point isn’t that reyes is not as good as hughs. my point is that reyes is untouchable. after that none of our prospects come close to hughs.

        • dannyb says:

I understand your point. But in terms of this potential deal, the Twins are either valuing Hughes as already a sure thing (which really isn’t the case), or overvaluing Melky Cabrera. If I was a lefty, I could hit a few HRs at Yankee Stadium to pad my stats too. Let’s get realistic here.

Last week, at his blog for the Star-Tribune, Twins reporter La Velle E. Neal III wrote that unless David Wright and Jose Reyes are in the deal, the Mets had ‘no shot’ at acquiring Johan Santana from the Twins.

    Today…

Also, last week at his blog for the Star-Tribune, La Velle E. Neal III wrote that the Mets remain a ‘viable destination’ for Santana, while adding, ‘The Twins like enough of their players that a deal could be worked out without Reyes being part of the package.’

Which one is it? This is the problem with hot-stove talk…it changes from moment to moment. Everyone seems to cite conversations with “sources” that either never took place or lacked any credibilty to begin with.

I’ll believe it all when I see it.

  12. extrawhitemeat says:

Reyes seems like a significantly more proven player then the other players mentioned in trade rumors..

More of the same.. blah blah blah… watch him go to LA or some other team that hasn’t been mentioned in endless posts about Johan.

  13. since1964 says:

Ole Mikey just can’t help himself. Guaranteed next season he’ll have inside information on what’s going on with the Miami Dolphins (as if anyone really cares). Matt, thanks for the info, but I don’t know how you can stand listening to him… I quit years ago.

    • dannyb says:

I wonder if he will proclaim that Cleo Lemon will not be the starting QB for their opener. I’m sick of him too. Just think they are entertaining.

  14. metfan5 says:

Why would Omar tell Mike anything? He knows that Mike would just go and tell his audience. Omar barely tells us anything himself, why would he tell Francessa?

  15. therealsandman says:

    its the same nonsense everyday

  16. would you rather listen to kim jones and cris carlin?

  17. Ball4 says:

How would everyone feel if Omar could get Santana for Reyes and one prospect? Is Santana worth the loss of Reyes if it keeps the Mets from depleting the farm?

    • MetLifer says:

H*LL NO! Basically you would be trading Reyes and a prospect for a 1 year rental and the right to pay Santana 140+ million. I wouldn’t give up any proven young major league ready player. Only way I would do it is if Santana was already under contract for the next couple of years which he’s not.

    • rosemarymets says:

i wouldnt trade Reyes straight up…plus a prospect…THAT IS LOCO—-

  18. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    Yup…
Right about Omar’s love affair with Piggy Cabrera too, right Mikey?

Or was it you who loved him because you both ordered the “Mo Vaughn” special sandwich in various New York delis?
