Quote: Mets Building Inventory for Johan
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 3, 2008 2:08 pm

During a chat with the Boston Globe, ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons said that Mets are currently trying to build up inventory to trade for Johan Santana, adding that Twins GM Bill Smith may be ‘waiting to see if any offer gets better.’

…hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors for the link

…i’m not sure what that means exactly…does he mean minor-league inventory…or, inventory on the major-league roster, which can make a player like Aaron Heilman more expendable than he may be today…man, i am so eager to see how this all plays out, for better or worse

In Gammons’s opinion, the Red Sox and Yankees should both sit tight and not make a big trade for Santana, adding…

“There are days when I really believe that the Red Sox and Yankees wake up and hoping somehow the Mets can find 4 or 5 good prospects in the organization and make the trade, but right now, that’s highly unlikely.”

…however, the big news from the chat is that peter is not a very big Hall & Oates fan…i’m sure you will sleep much better tonight knowing this

…big, bam, boom, peterbig, bam, boom…

Tell Gammons to take the marbles out of his mouth.

    • LOL.
      +2
I’m not allowed to give out points though.

If I was more compassionate, I would point out that it isn’t nice to make fun of a guy who had a stroke. Truth is, I hate seeing him, Kiner and Dick Clark subjedt us to the uncomfortableness of listening to them. Retire already, or stcik to print.

      • pochemunyet says:

I’ve been saying that about Kiner long before he had a stroke.

        Like, 1978.

But seriously, all I can think about is why they are continuing.

It’s like trying to keep from staring at the fat ballerina.

Why keep excusing the obese stewardess who keeps bumping your head with her ass?

        • Achilles400 says:

That is some funny stuff as I was just at a huge ballet recital for my daughter with some hefty lasses and was flying America over the holidays and still have some bruising on my head from their stewardesses!

        • pochemunyet says:

AND you almost want to apologize that your head touched their butt…

  2. tfc3rid says:

And of couse Francessa said he talked to Moar last night and said that there is NO MOVEMENT on the Santana thing… The Twins refuse to talk to the Mets if there is no Reyes…

    • dannyb says:

How many callers has he hung up on today? How many has he treated like he knows 7000% more than?

I completely prefer the “Angry Puppy” to him. By a landslide.

Hey, when do we find out the results of the Iowa caucuses? I hope Hillary wins for one reason only. Can’t wait for the Post to nickname her and her hubby: “HillBilly”

    • napes22 says:

Francessa has also broke like 3 deals over the last 2 months that were completely false.

      • dannyb says:

Don’t get me wrong, those guys are very amusing and more than slightly entertaining. I personally think they could both do a show by themselves. Here’s how I would do the WFAN daily lineup:

5AM-10AM = painfully Boomer and Carton
        10-10:15 = Steve Somers
        10:25-2 = Angry Puppy
        2-6:30 = Francessa
        6:35-6:37 = Steve Somers
        6:40-10 = Some crappy NJ team’s game
        10-10:03 = Steve Somers
        10:05-1AM = Evan Roberts
        1:03-1:04 = Steve Somers
        1:10-4:55 = Benigno
        4:56-4:59 = Steve Somers

I will laugh my proverbial, ever-lovin’ butt off when Santana goes to the Mets and every Yankee fan on Earth starts whining that he isn’t that good, anyway…

  4. Achilles400 says:

Exactly why would anyone care what that old man has in his I-Pod?

  5. huge_mets_fan11 says:

I love how in the chat Gammons says that the A’s think Coco Crisp is the best centerfielder in the game right now. Yeah ok Peter, I am sure Beane would rather have Crisp over Beltran, A. Jones, Hunter, A. Roward, etc. Gammons just overrates his Red Sox all the time.

    • dannyb says:

The article said: “A’s think Coco Crisp is the best centerfielder in the game right now.”

The article meant to say: “A’s think Coco Crisp is the best centerfielder in the game right now not named Fruit Loops, Lucky Charms, Coco Pebbles (no relation), Honey Bunches of Oats, or Cheerios (no relation to Yao).”

  6. professor met says:

If Gammons is suggesting that yankees and sox should sit tight and in fact WANT to, then logic dictates that the mets should clearly be a strong contender. No one else can or is willing to pay Santana and if he doesnt get moved by spring training and declines to be moved by the trade deadline (which he has threatened to do) twins have to get SOMETHING.

  7. reyomcd1031 says:

Greetings all. I decided to play GM for a second(we all know what a great idea THAT is), but I think I may have come up with a “reasonable whopper”, and I would love to know opinions, either serious, point giving, or insulting. Take your pick.

    Here goes….

4 Way Trade between the Mets, A’s, Red Sox, and Twins

A’s get Coco Crisp, Kevin Mulvey, prospect from Twins
Red Sox get Aaron Heilman, 2 prospects from Mets/A’s(1 each)
    Mets Get Johan Santana
Twins Get Joe Blanton, Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey, prospect from Red Sox

    A’s give Joe Blanton, prospect
Red Sox give Coco Crisp, prospect
Mets give Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, Mike Pelfrey, Kevin Mulvey, prospect
    Twins give Johan Santana, prospect

I really do feel that each team is getting equal value for each player.

Coco Crisp nets 1 MLRP and 2 prospects
Joe Blanton nets 1 ML CF and 2 prospects
Johan Santana nets 1 ML SP and 3 prospects

Thoughts? We still keep F-Mart and Guerra, and can rebuild with our 3 draft picks.

    • Achilles400 says:

      must…take….aspirin

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Which prospects are these exactly? Obviously none of significance, otherwise the Mets give away quite hefty baggage. And either way the A’s are getting ripped the hell off.

Would the A’s actually take Crisp and Mulvey for Blanton?

      • reyomcd1031 says:

Considering the asking price from the Mets was Gomez, Mulvey, and a prospect, substituting Crisp for Gomez isn’t necessarily a stretch. I didn’t specify prospects because I don’t know the other systems well enough.

Although I thought the 6 way trade was quite creative.

  8. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Haren trade – 3 top 100 prospects, 1 middle of the road, 2 insignificant.

Red Sox offer – 2 top 100 youngsters, 1 middle of the road, 1 insignificant

Twins demand from Yankees: 1 top of line line youngster, 1 middle of the road and two insignificant.

The Mets may have to match the Haren deal (from Smith’s perspective) to get a deal done:

    Carlos Gomez (top 100)
Aaron Heilman (would be top 100 if eligible)
    Kevin Mulvey (Top 100)
Brant Rustich (middle of the road)
Philip Humber (Middle of the road)
    Ruben Gotay (insignificant)

    • points guy says:

You can’t just enlarge the scope to top 100. That’s like saying Haren garnered 5 humans. Santana will garner at least 5 humans. Go get any 5 humans.

    • Coolpapabell says:

I don’t think Haren and Santana should garner equal value. The winner of the Santana sweepstakes not gives up prospects, but they will also have to sign him to a big 7yr deal. The D-backs get three cheap years from Haren.

Bill Smith should be asking for a lot less for Johan, and he has less to chose from so his demands should lessesn even further.

  9. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

NOTE: DONT TAKE THIS POST SERIOUSLY. THIS IS MY IMAGINATION:

    The insane-o brain-o SIX WAY DEAL!#%**%&%&#

    Reds Get: Erik Bedard

Twins Get: Jon Niese, Homer Bailey, Edwin Encarnarcion, Corey Brown, Ryan Kalish

    Mets Get: Johan Santana

Red Sox Get: Joe Blanton, Matt Belisle

A’s Get: Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, Coco Crisp

O’s Get: Jed Lowrie, Aaron Heilman, Edinson Volquez, Justin Masterson

Just so all know, this is:

Gomez, Heilman, Mulvey & Niese for Santana
Lowrie, Crisp, Kalish & Masterson for Blanton & Belisle
Bailey, Volquez, Encarnarcion & Belisle for Bedard

    • Coolpapabell says:

Sounds like a fun trade. I don’t think I would ever have been able to think this one up.

    • Achilles400 says:

With all those teams, maybe Omar could actually get Santana without giving anyone up! That would be something, smoke and mirrors!
