I read some argument that there would be diminishing returns with higher capacity at Citifield because of higher building/maintenance costs. But I just can’t believe that. I think Wilpon sometimes makes the sentimental decision. And he kept the stadium smaller so it would remind him more of Ebbets field. But that’s not a good reason for limiting capacity the way they did. It’s a poor business decision.

I would prefer “Shea”, but $20 mil is tough to turn down.

I think building a 45K seat stadium is absolutely preposterous. We averaged 48K this past season!

Also, keep in mind the deal for the naming rights was done way before the Yankees got that latest tax break/subsidy. I believe like 2 years ago?

Frankly, I think what the Yankees are doing is preferable — not selling naming rights to the entire stadium but instead to certain parts of it — like entranceways or common spaces. Why didn’t the Mets do that? I also don’t like it that the Mets cut capacity so much. The Yankees didn’t cut theirs that much and will probably reap additional revenues from the extra seats. Why didn’t the Mets increase capacity instead? I would have liked to see them keep the name Shea Stadium.
