Note: A’s like Crisp
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 4, 2008 3:28 pm

During a chat with the Boston Globe, ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons said the A’s could be interested in acquiring Coco Crisp from Boston, assuming he isn’t traded to the Twins in a deal for Johan Santana.

“I could see Billy Beane trading for Crisp and then turning around and trading him before season starts,” writes Gammons, ‘since the A’s think he’s best center fielder in game right now.’

…great…boston, trade crisp and company to oakland for Joe Blanton, instead, which will let the Yankees know you are out of the running for santana, paving a way for johan to casually waltz in to queenscome on, do it…do it

    Or….

The Red Sox get Blanton, the Yankees see another opportunity to grab Santana… They offer Melky, Hughes and a minor leaguer or two and it’s done…

Young Hankenstein wants this deal done… Trust me, they will get it done…

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

The problem is the Sox wouldn’t give up in a quest for Santana if he was going to the Bronx.

And the Yankees certainly don’t have a better offer than Boston because of the fact that Boston wouldn’t have let that happen. They could’ve easily added that extra prospect or two to beat the Yankees out.

This is all sounding like a game of Risk or something. Waiting for the dominos to fall.

But, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a dark horse team appear out of nowhere and snag him at the last minute. Just because all the pros “know” something, doesn’t mean it is true. After all, who expected or predicted the Tigers/Marlins trade?

But, if the Sox do move on, will it make the Yankees drop out too (assuming they are only in to keep the sox from getting him), or will they look at it as an opportunity to strong arm the Twins with a weak nonsense package?

  3. Lightweis says:

Actually, I could see the Sox trading for Huston Street, and slotting Papelbon back into the rotation.

    • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

When you have the best closer in baseball you don’t make him into a starter.

Especially for an average to below average closer.

      • Lightweis says:

Since when is a 2.88 ERA, a WHIP less than 1.0, and 1.25 SO/INN below average???

Understanding that Papelbon is a dominant closer, but before last season, both he and the Sox wanted him to start.

Please don’t reply, as you’ve lost all credibility.

        • mrose says:

what is with the bunch of A-Holes who have infiltrated this site??

        • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Since I have lost all “credibility”, let me ask you this. Was Armando Benitez a good closer? He had great peripheral stats but was terrible in big games.

          In 2006, Street saved 37 games, and blew 11. That’s a 77% clip.

In 2007, 5 blown saves and 17 saves for a clip of 77%.

Not evan factoring in durability issues with him, he isn’t close to being in Papelbon’s league.

          In 2006, Papelbon saved 36 games and blew 6. That’s 85%.

In 2007, Papelbon saved 37 games and blew 3. That’s a 92% successful save rate.

My point is why would the Red Sox trade for Street to supplant Papelbon? Their rotation is already brimming with successful starters.

Saying don’t reply, you have lost all credibility is akin to running away with your fingers over your ears singing loudly.

        • Coolpapabell says:

Well, if I remember correctly the sox doctors felt that Papelbon was a high injury risk from the bullpen that is why the Sox didn’t want him closing. He has nasty minor league numbers as a starter. If you can bring Street and have Paps start you have one damn scary rotation at a great price.

          A special treat for Ya’ll:
When they want a batter filled with terror
they call on me, Rick Aguilera
slider’s hot, I’m on the mound
with cool control I mow ‘em down

      • dcmetsfan says:

A starter is more valuable than a closer, simply because you get more innings out of the starter. It’s really more of a question of whether Papelbon can make the transition. But if he’s even remotely as effective as a starter as he is as a closer, then you’ve just added a top flight starter to your rotation.

And Houston Street is hardly an average or below average closer. He missed some time last year with an injury, but he’s been a fairly dominant closer for three years now.

        • stickguy says:

Then a starter has to be way more valuable then a set up man!

          Let Heilman start!

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

          touche

        • MetsSox says:

There’s no way Papelbon is moved into the starting rotation. He has accepted and now fallen in love with the closers position as has become one of the best closers in the game. Sox are not going to mess with that, even if they trade 1 of their young SP. They have enough SP and a good bullpen…there’s no reason for change. Crisp for Blanton could work in some way, but if the Sox don’t give up anyone else the Sox will have 7 potential starters for 2008. Since the Sox are very strong in their offensive and SP attack, I think they should try to strenghten their middle relief, making it an easier transition to Okajima and Papelbon.
I do hope the Sox give up Crisp for something solid and then the Mets turn and attack for Santana, but I still don’t see it happening and the Yanks could sweep in at any moment.

  4. Kalihan42 says:

Blanton would be a good fit for boston. They already have 2 starters with nasty stuff. An inning eater with an upside like Blanton would easily fill them out and improve one of the more steady rotations in baseball. If they did get Santana next year I would not want to face boston in 3 game (although the prospect even if they don’t is a bit scary).

I think the reason the yanks have not offered too much for santana, and seem unwilling to, is that they have already locked in so many aging player to bloated contractas that the idea of 7 years to lcok on Santana seems like too much. If he blew an arm out the skanks would be eating more money….maybe they are finaly setting limits? I don’t beleive it either

  5. therealsince86 says:

If they think that Crisp is the best CF in the game then I would trade them Carp and Gomez for Blanton and Street. Why because Gomez and Carp are at least comparable to Canseco and McGwire :)
That being said realistically if they like Crisp they should like Gomez and should be able to work out a trade of Gomez and a couple of low level prospects for Blanton. But Beane and Omar will never work out a trade.

  6. The best defensive center fielder. How bout’ this:

    Gomez Huston street
    humber
    Molvey &
    pelfrey for Joe Blanton
    Gotay
    Hielman

    • I meant Gomez, pelfrey, humber, gotay, and hielman for Blanton and street

      • dannyb says:

Too steep a price for a reliever coming off an injury riddled two seasons and a starter who is a good, but not great innings eater. Especially considering that is the package we want to use to acquire the best pitcher in the game.

Good idea though. Wish we could figure out a way to get Nathan back in a Santana deal. Then it wouldn’t kill to give up an extra top level prospect.

  7. MudvilleNine says:

Why does everyone keep throwing Gotay in on these trades? Who’s going to back up short and third if he’s gone? There’s no one in the organization that can do it right now. The guy is a pretty decent hitter and has done fine in pinch hitting spots, he runs well, and though he isnt the greatest fielder he does a good enough job as a fill-in. If you got rid of him you’d have to make another trade to get a replacement for him, more of the farm gone. Terrific.

    • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Someone send this post to Bill Smith.

    • LetsgoMets1 says:

Gotay should be viewed has expandable. Didn’t they sign Easley for that role? Or is Easley just 2nd and Short? Blanton and Street are two good players but I don’t like that trade. Heilman is good as a set up guy. If we put him in the Rotation how many innings can he realistically pitch? I’m not sure and Street has an injury problems these past few years. If we’re talking about hypothetical trades and taking chances on pitchers with history then I would like to trade for Harden. He’s good when he’s healthy and he’s still in his 20’s. Thats a chance worth taking. Right?

      • MudvilleNine says:

Easley doesnt have the range for 2nd base anymore, what makes you think he could handle short? Easley was signed for 1st base, a little 2nd, and some outfield, but mainly as a right handed pinch hitter since he did well at that last year. Plus I dont think he ever played short since high school. Gotay is the main backup at the second, short, and third positions right now. So Gotay in no way is expendable.

  8. stickguy says:

Well, Braden F’n Looper (anyone know that his real middle name is LaVerne? That might explain things!) is a good compare.

32 years old, and was sucky for years. No idea when the last time he started was.

He went from closer to starter and pitched 175 innings (31 starts). I would expect that Heilman could do at least that many.

Looper might have done more if he didn’t, well, suck.

  9. stickguy says:

Oh, and why does Gotay always get completely dismissed?

He is young (cheap and conntrollable), has ML experience with some success, has shown some pop and hitting ability, and his defense certainly has room to improve.

You mean that there aren’t any teams that could use someone like this, or maybe even (gasp!) give him a shot at a regular job to see what he can do?

May not be the 2nd coming of Utley, but he certainly could be a legit chip in a trade.

I have no idea what the Twins 2B or 3B situation is, but I thought there offense stunk? Gotay could instantly become the 3rd or 4th best hitter on the team!

  10. stickguy says:

Gomez, Gotay, Mulvey and 1 more guy that isn’t Pelfrey, Guerra or Martinez and that is a solid haul for 1 year of Santana. Potentially 3 guys that could all be on the Twins in 2008, at least 1 as a starter 4/1.

  11. LetsgoMets1 says:

Castillo was their second baseman, who did we give up to acquire him? Looper is a pretty good comparison and with saying that maybe Heilman can have success in the rotation. I’m just saying the Mets need a No.1 starter more than a secondbasemen who’s doesn’t even start for us. I like Gotay and I see his potential but if he’s a chip then thats what you do with chips, you trade em. …….

But never trade F Mart Omar, never.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Again I ask, who takes over the backup role at short and third? Dont say Easley or Anderson cause thats just ridiculous. Theres nobody down at AAA to do it. God forbid Reyes or Wright get hurt and is out for a few weeks. What are you going to do, promote some AAA rookie with no experience and cant hit to replace them? If we actually had someone there to do the job I might be inclined to agree with you but with nobody as backup I cant see doing it. You guys keep asking if we trade the farm what are we going to do when one or two of our pitchers go down. Same principle here. You’re going to be complaining why we dont have a quality backup. So please stop looking to give away something we dont have a replacement for.

Out of curiosity, do you think we’ll see Silly Willie “sipping champagne” on his upcoming Mets Hot Stove appearance?

  13. How did I get thrown into a thread about the A’s and that cereal guy in Boston?

    • Coolpapabell says:

Wow, that’s a pretty ambitious username. Do you know something we don’t? I hope your name doesn’t befall the same fate as our friend at Blastingsthrilledge had to endure.

Anywho, it should also be noted that Gammons was also qouted as saying that the Mets are “trying to build inventory” to trade for Johan, durung that same chat. I still don’t know what he means by “building inventory”, so take it with an once of weed.

  14. SheaGuevara says:

    Inconceivable!

  15. da burg's greatest mets fan says:

whoa whoa whoa….how come no one else is a little bit surprised by the a’s thought that crisp is the best center fielder in the game?….in the game? not even in his own division is he the best…he isn’t even the best on his team. he got benched for ellisbury in the WS. that is ridiculous. gomez is already almost as good as him.
