Buzz: Mets still Interested in Blanton
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 5, 2008 9:24 am

According to a report by Peter Botte in the Daily News, citing ‘a person with knowledge of the situation,’ the Mets remain interested in acquiring A’s RHP Joe Blanton and have recently asked Billy Beane to ‘keep them in mind,’ ‘just as it was with Dan Haren.’

‘The A’s almost certainly would expect at least three more young players in return for Blanton,’ writes Botte.

According to a recent report from Jerry Crasnick at ESPN.com, trade talks between the Mets and A’s regarding Blanton had ‘hit a lull.’  The Mets are still interested in Blanton, writes Crasnick, but not at the expense of Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey and Aaron Heilman.

Last season for the A’s, Blanton was 14–10 with a 3.95 ERA through 34 starts, during which he allowed an average of just one walk per start.

He made at least 32 starts in each of the last three seasons.

He is eligible for salary arbitration this off-season, and the two after that, and is eligible for free agency after 2010.

Botte also reports on Johan Santana, the Mets, and their interest in Kyle Lohse, Livan Hernandez, Jon Lieber and Freddy Garcia.

id be hard pressed to give up heilman or gomez for blanton. and im a blanton fan

  2. skip says:

Peter Botte also says that the Twins still want Jose Reyes, too. Today’s Merry-go-Round has opened up for business. All it costs is your two cents worth!

  3. PC521 says:

If the A’s accepted like Mulvey, Humber, and Niese, we should forget about Johan and just do that deal

    • Nate W. says:

      hell no…

The thing with Santana is that he likely will be better than any pitcher the Mets have to offer in trade until the day he retires… and even more likely over the next five years.

With Blanton, in two years anyone of Pelfrey, Humber, or Mulvey could be better than Blanton. He has a very limited track record and could fizzle out quickly.

If they trade all three (and I realize you said Niese instead, but he has little value) then there is 0% chace you keep the right one. Even keeping Pelfrey there is still 1/3 chance they keep the right one. Its just not worth it for Blanton.

I’d do one of (Pelfrey, Humber, and Mulvey) in a package of other minor league pitchers (not Guerra) and take my chances with 2/3 of that group. The A’s wont take that little for Blanton though, so the deal dies for me.

      • Meddler says:

Niese is actually somewhat interesting. He’s probably the most underrated of the Mets pitching prospects. He had a pretty good 2006 in the Sally league but struggled in PSL this year. He did close out the year strong though, and he’s a lefty with a pretty solid repertoire. He throws a good splitter and also already features a solid breaking ball. His fastball needs some work, but from what I’ve read he’s managed to get his four seamer into the mid-90s at times.

He’s a station-to-station prospect, but he’s a fairly projectable lefty. He’s bigger than Kevin Mulvey and also has a more developed out pitch in his splitter. His command also made a drastic improvement in 2007 (113/32 K/BB in 137 IP). He turned 21 after the season ended. He should probably start the season back in PSL, but a good first month or two could earn him a quick promotion and keep him slightly ahead of the age curve. He needs to work on making his fastball a little less hittable, but if he manages he could be come a solid lefty big league option who throws strikes and keeps the ball in the park.

        • Nate W. says:

I like him an Bobby Parnell, but I’ve also liked MacLane, and Keppel, and Matt Petersen too. So what I do know about minor league pitchers is that I like them too much…

        • Meddler says:

lol fair enough. I’m not saying he’s a big prospect or anything. A lot of guys in his situation don’t even become that. But I don’t think a ton has to go right for him to become one. I could see him being next offseason’s version of Kevin Mulvey, or I could see him being completely valueless two years from now. For now though, a lefty who has good command of multiple pitches and who keeps the ball in the park should be at least somewhat interesting.

        • Nate W. says:

I think he could have a big league career as a 4th-5th starter for a few years, then a middle/long lefty reliever. Terry Mullholland comes to mind, Schoeneweis even…

  4. metsfansberealistic says:

Heilman, Humber & Gotay for Blanton would do it for me

that way, we’d keep Gomez, F Mart, Mulvey, Pelfrey

our pen is pretty deep as it is, assuming Duaner is healthy (that’s the key)

  5. boredatwork says:

Im so sick of this and I am sure everyone else is as well…..

    • dcullin23 says:

Do you really believe this rumor??? Billy Beane has never traded with Omar

      • ReyesRocks says:

and, your thinking, is that because he has never traded with Omar, that he never will? That doesn’t make much sense really, because the Twins GM had never traded with ANYONE, but he made a trade to the Devil Rays.

        • dcullin23 says:

What makes sense is Beane has always played Omar for the moron that Omar is and is stringing him along again!!!

    • ReyesRocks says:

      I’

      • ReyesRocks says:

I’m sick of it too. I’d much rather have nothing to read, than be forced to come to this site and complain about reading the same thing over and over.

  6. PC521 says:

I think if we trade Heilman, we’d have to trade Mulvey in a deal for Rauch or Cordero

  7. jerseymetsfan says:

imop lets not trade anybody for another 3-4 starter, we have that. let’s give the kids a chance and keep heilman until something of value comes along. do not make a trade to make a trade, it seems that’s what we did w/ milledge.

    • Nate W. says:

exactly! …well, until the Milledge part.

Lets give the kids a chance to be as good as Blanton, its not that unlikely.

I get the feeling the Mets will have to hold Heilman until ST when they get a chance to see Dauner, Wise and Sosa in action to see if thats a righty pen group they feel good about. Then move Heilman in a trade for Santana.

Heilman is exactly the kind of closer the Twins like to find. Aguilera, Nathan, he fits that mold perfectly.

      • gowrightgo says:

I am for the following set of moves internally…..

        1) Sign extension for Pedro for 2 yrs and $38M
        2) Sign OP to extension 4 yrs and $60M
        3) Place Heilman in the rotation right now and tell him to get ready
        4) Move Duque to the pen
        5) Sign Dotel to 2yr $6M deal with incentives to make $10M total based on innings pitched
        6) Trade with the Pirates for Snell (trade em Pelfrey Gotay and Mulvey) or trade with the Brewers for Capuano (trade em Mulvey Humber and Carp)

        Rotation of ….
        Pedro
        Maine
        OP
        Snell/Capuano
        Heilman

        Pen of …..
        Wagner
        Sanchez
        Dotel
        Duque
        Sosa
        Feliciano
        Joe SMith
        Mike Wise
        Register
(with 2 guys either placed in AAA or returned in rule 5 or on DL)

We also get to keep Pelfrey or Humber and we get to keep Guerra, Fmart and Gomez for another year. We have some near ready SP help in AAA (Pelf or Humber) and we improve the rotation by getting at least one more qualified starter. I also think it gives us a final chance to look at Heilman and possibly keep him if he succeeds rather than certainly losing him to FA at the end of 2008.

        • Meddler says:

Have you ever seen Duque warm up before a game? He’s not exactly timely about it.

        • gowrightgo says:

he has actually done it before successfully in his career. Even in the playoffs as you may recall. The issue is will he not can he

        • Nate W. says:

I’m not for swapping Heilman and Duque’s roles. Both are proven at one thing and a real crap shoot at the other.

Heilman has no more chance of success as a starter than Pelfrey or Humber in 2008. They’re all unknowns as starters. Heilman is a proven top set up man and I would not want to mess that up when there is absolutely nothing to gain.

        • Meddler says:

I believe the playoffs was the only time Duque relieved. He came into a desperate situation for the White Sox and bailed them out. But its hardly something he ever became accustomed to doing. Other than that I think the only time he’s done it was with the Mets in 2007, a couple times.

Its a nice idea if he can replace Heilman, but I just think of every time Gary and Keith would be sitting in the booth laughing because of a late start to a road game when El Duque was so tardy coming in from his warmup.

  8. bonatom says:

this would be an aweful trade for the Mets. Blanton is OK.. i think Maine is Better.. to high of a price.. no thanks

    • DannyPhantom says:

      Seriously.

With the current state our club is in, I would rather put Maine and/or Perez on the trading block and see how much we could pillage somebody else’s farm system before we gutted ours for a guy like Joe Normal, I mean Blanton.

  9. genius says:

    again, blanton is a POS

  10. wolverine193 says:

    Screw Blanton, get Santana

  11. tonylett says:

Although previously mocked, I see where alot of my fellow Met
fans have come around to the possibility of Matt Morris.
Again, if the Bucs are going to move him, why not to beautiful
Flushing on the Bay? At this point, it’s pretty obvious Santana is
not being moved before opening day and while Blanton is a nice
#3 OR maybe #2, the price is insane! This is the state of baseball-2007/08- Too many bad teams, some with an OK pitcher or two and some OK teams(like ours) desperate for
a pitcher to put them/us over the top. If the cost of Morris and,
maybe a Nady is not any of the upper-tier prospects then, Why
    would you not??

    • Nate W. says:

      lol, what?!?

no Morris, no Nomo, no Lima time,… just no!

    • juunit says:

People have said Pelfrey may do as good as Blanton so why not let him have another shot. Well Pelfrey is already better than Morris. That would be one of the dumbest trades to even consider. As for whoever mentioned getting Snell the Mariners are trying but the asking price is just as insane so what makes you think we could get him for such a low price? I love how so many people just assume their trade scenarios would actually work with the other team’s front office.

  12. johnblacksox says:

I just can’t get excited about 2008. After the historic choke of their huge lead in 2007, is any lead safe in 2008? If the Mets are up by 10 games on September 1, will you feel confident that they are going to the playoffs? Or more like, here comes another big collapse.

I’m still baffled, pissed off, and disgusted that they gave away Milledge, 12 months ago the crown jewel of their farm system, Omar’s untouchable prospect, for a 4th OF and a no-bat catcher.

It feels like a lesser version of Kazmir-Zambrano.

Forget Santana, the Mets don’t even have enough value to trade for fat, lazy Joe Blanton.

WTF is there to be excited about for 2008? Same bunch that made for an incredibly miserable 2007? Whoopie!!

2006 was their year, 2007 was a preview of what’s to come. Far from being a “team on the rise”, I get the feeling that this is a team on the decline.

Neither Willie nor Omar have exactly covered themselves in glory the past couple years. Do they inspire your confidence? Omar as the shrewd talent evaluator, and Willie as the great motivator?

Nah, me neither. We could be looking at the warm weather version of the Knicks.

    • Meddler says:

To be fair, Milledge 12 months ago WAS NOT the crown jewel of the farm system. Try 24 months ago. 12 months ago Milledge’s value was as low as it ever was after all his “antics” and supbar production. 12 months ago, I doubt you could have gotten two proven big league players of any status for just Milledge.

  13. Master Neo says:

Everyone is talking about the rotation, but we still need a little more in the bullpen…y hasn’t anyone signed Bob Wickman?

    2006- 84K’s in 108IP
    2007- 74K’s in 100IP

  14. Big Lou says:

Why don’t we just trade F-mart to San Fran for Lincecum?

    • Nate W. says:

…because Duquette isnt the Giants GM?

      • Big Lou says:

What do you think it would take to land him?

        • Nate W. says:

The Giants need big league hitting and have money to spend. So there isnt much of a match besides Wright…

I would be for looking into a deal of Beltran (who the Giants can afford) where the Mets got Lincecum OR Cain and a few of positional prospects.

FM and Delgado, with the Giants picking the whole contract for Cain… I’d think the Giants would want more.

      • gowrightgo says:

yeah but Sabean is the worst GM in baseball. He was about to trade either Cain or Lincecum for Rios. He might part with one of them for Gomez or FMart plus a pitcher. Worth calling right?

        • Big Lou says:

I would, but i think their looking for a proven bat. I think Milledge and a pitcher would have gotten him here.

    • jerseymetsfan says:

why don’t we just trade omar and willie for dombrowski and leyland

      • nychurch111 says:

        u r not lying.

dombrowski is building a powerhouse in detroit with half the resources minaya has.

and leyland knows when his team is playing like a bunch of punks, and calls them out publicly.

  15. The Glider says:

. . . and round and round we go, where it stops nobody knows.

  16. bobabouy01 says:

Great show of loaylty & respect – can you say “Bernie Williams” ?

Talk about being tossed out with the garbage……this guy embodied what the Yankee’s are supposed to be (although he did it with considerably more class than any Yankee FAN would ever show) and instead of finding a way to keep him with the club, management just turned him out.

The Yanks are just like school in the summertime……NO CLASS !!

  17. hot stove chef says:

The Mets just traded for Angel Pagan… Why?

  18. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

    Don’t know

  19. toomanyuniforms says:

Mets add OF depth in the form of Angel Pagan, whom I like, but who is a bit old to be a “prospect.” I think it’s a good move — speed, defense, depth — especially if another of our young OFs is getting fitted for a Twins’ (we hope) or A’s (umm, sure) jersey.

Incidentally, my solution to the Santana/Blanton mess is this: put the following offer on the table — Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, Heilman. Tell them it’s final. They don’t like it? Walk away. Everybody in baseball is waiting for the Mets to “overpay.” Everybody in baseball can cram it. Instead of talking up John Maine, just say that there’s a plan in place, and any price larger than the aforesaid offer would be too disruptive to the “plan,” even if it means adding one of the best pitchers in baseball. (This is Cashman’s approach, and it has a ring to it. I certainly hope that there actually is a “plan” for the Mets above and beyond a nice term to use during the course of negotiation. I’m not convinced.) If the Twins need to save face, maybe you swap Guerra in for Humber or Mulvey, but I think, going forward, the value of proving the Mets aren’t a drunken sailor is something to throw into the equation, and will make teams more realistic in negotiation.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Oh, and if “Santana” becomes “Blanton”, withdraw Mulvey and Heilman from the offer, and at no point swap in Guerra. Gomez and Humber. If Beane balks, tell him to get Blanton’s XXXXL ready in green and yellow.

    • The Captain says:

Angel Pagan as a 4th out fielder/bench warmer, interesting hmm……. with a bunch of top prospects and a major leauge talent out fielder in the twins package for Johan ,,,,, and what does everyone think about after that, trading for Matt Morris for a low level minor leauger, and taking on most of his 10 mil, I think Morris was awesome and could regain that status back possibly, and you might think Im crazy, but also trading inconsistant Oliver Perez for a top of the line reliever and a bunch of great prospects, to go along with our 3 top draft picks and keep our minor leauge players respectable. Or something along those lines inorder to give the farm for Santana which we wont regret. (if my original idea of being forced to deal Main/prospects for Johan fails) Either way we have to end up with Santana, no if’s and’s or but’s.

  20. Nate W. says:

Blanton has more value to the A’s than almost any team in baseball. The teams that would value him more need to keep thier three prospects rather than have one pitcher because they are going no where soon. The A’s need to be blown away, and no one values Blanton that high.

I cant even see a match next offseason when Blanton will be closer to free agency and his value will come down slightly.

So Blanton will stay with the A’s for two more years (or 1 year and to the trade deadline) when they will trade him for less as hell have just one year left before becoming a free agent.

    mark it down!

  21. Nate W. says:

I guess we’ll be seeing you two in 2009 when there is a chance, enjoy your year without baseball…
