Quote: Hankees Leaning Towards Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 5, 2008 9:09 am

In the New York Post, Mike Puma quotes Yankees GM Brian Cashman as saying…

“This is what the rotation is, and this is what we’re going [to spring training] with.”

However, according to the Associated Press, Yankees VP Hank Steinbrenner said the following about his team’s pursuit of Johan Santana while talking with reporters in Florida yesterday…

“Nothing is really decided at this point.  I’m still leaning towards doing it.  There’s others leaning not to do it.  There are some others that are leaning to do it also.  Disagreements within the organization.  Nothing major, but just different opinions.  I’ve changed my opinion a couple times…I’m going to make the final decisions because when you’re the owner you should.”

According to Puma, citing ‘sources,’ the Yankees do not have an official standing offer to Minnesota for Santana.

Meanwhile, at his blog for the Journal News, Peter Abraham writes…

“The Twins must be loving this. Cashman is like a poker player who’s buddy is standing behind him saying, ‘Wow, you have two kings.’”

…from what i understand, while hank would like to acquire santana, cashman and Hal Steinbrenner do not, because cashman has ‘a plan,’ and it includes Phil Hughes, and hal has a budget, and it doesn’t include santana…

im still never going to get how a package of hughes, melky, marquez could be considred more valuable than gomez, mulvey, pelfrey, fernando/heilman

melky is a medicore CFer, and while hughes is an extremly talent pitcher hes proved just as much as mike pelfrey has @ the big league level. obviously hughes still holds much more value than pelfrey, and rightly so but marquez? give me a break. its hughes and 2 craps for johan.

I don’t see how Melky is a mediocre but what it comes down to, I think, is the players the Yankees and red sox are offering are less than 2 years away from making the big leagues. They could be making an impact for the twins this year and pushing them toward being a championship team in 09, 010 where as the most valuable players we’ve offered are a year to 2 years away from making a big league roster.

You think Melkey is less than mediocre or better? His numbers say that he is less than average starters in CF but his energy and I guess some more potential puts him just about average or above. To me he is the 22nd best starting CFer in baseball.

I’d say he’s slightly better than average defensively and has the tools to become an impact bat. He just turned 23 in August so he still has potential.

This is freakin’ ridiculous.

The Mets just gotta give 3 guys: Gomez, Guerra, Mulvey.
Then give Humber and another pitcher with less value (Moviel/Rustich/Clyne), and add Gotay.

If you’re desperate, make it Gomez, Heilman, Guerra, Mulvey, Humber & Gotay.

How would you know anything about the Mets.. I doubt you even watch Yankee games. You’re probably too concerned with watching the next episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

wow the 2007 winner was the st louis cardinals… so they wouldnt have played them in the world series. I dont think the yankees will any match for the tigers or sox this year, their rotation is very shaky, chien ming wang is not really an ace in my eyes and i doubt pettitite will still be very good. Joba and hughes will probably be preety good tho.

I just love the way that Hankee seems to think that everyone is just waiting for him to decide what he wants, including the Twins.

Unless Smith told them they can have Johan immediately for X, Y and Z, the other team sinvolved might have a say in things!

If the Mets don’t get Santana, it better not be because they held back on any of their prospects. The only excuse would be because the Twins insisted on Reyes.

If the “owner” has to make these decisions, as Hank says, I think the Yankees are in a wonderful position to have an even more bloated payroll with aging stars at every position, just like a few years ago. Either the Yankees have no real desire to obtain Santana, in which case they actually have a plan to drive up the cost to other teams or they are just the most dysfunctional front office in baseball, as they always should be.

I think this clown will blink in the end and give up 5 or 6 prospects to get Santana and outbid himself in a 8 year 170 million dollar contract while patting himself on the back like he did with ARod.

Tool doesn’t even begin to describe this guy. He is quickly moving into the pantheon of self important offspring who would be living in the gutter if it wasn’t for their birthright, see James Dolan. Jeffy W looks like a mastermind compared to these guys.

Amazing how 2 minutes in the spot light gives some people dillusions of grandeur.

Keep it up Hank, you make me confident the Yankees will be no closer to another WS than they’ve been since 2000.

Besides his possible support for the acquisition of Santana, from our perspective, Hankee’s emergence as a blowhard with some decision making power is good news.

It makes the backpages a bit more interesting and gives us someone to aim our venom at now that Clemens is headed for prison. Having a loose cannon makes Ca$hman’s job that much harder.

Screw Heilman, Guerra, Mulvey, Gomez or whatever.

nah man—-we gotta keep Nando and GUERRA

im open to trading anyone else—-gomez, heilman, pelfrey, humber, mulvey, neise, anyone. we gotta keep those two tho.

But why Guerra? we have an abundance of young pitchers, and virtually no need for Guerra with Santana.

The Mets will always have big prospects. Relax.
