What if the Mets are planning on making the following offer to Minnesota for Johan Santana:

Endy Chavez or Angel Pagan (to play CF in 2008)
Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez (top OF prospects)
Deolis Guerra or Kevin Mulvey (their top 2 pitching prospects)
Aaron Heilman, Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber (major league or major league ready pitchers)

This keeps the Mets from losing both Gomez and Martinez, and makes sure the 2008 outfield depth is still there. As for the pitchers, they only lose two top young guys, or one plus the established Heilman, depending on what the Twins are looking for.

I will say this until I am blue in the face:
Hank is a Fat, drunk, obnoxious tub of crap who is trying to convince the world that "he is the man, now." Who would want to play for this a$$hole. He is late 1970's George all over again.
"As the owner, it is my decision." What a jerk. That's for over stating the obvious. Gee, as the owner of my house it is my responsiblity to pay the mortgage. What a complete tool this guy is....

I agree completely. The only back page I care about is the day after the World Series ends. I want the Mets to be on that one.

That said, I think Johan gives the Mets the best chance of getting on that back page next year. Maybe if they don't get him, they'll be good enough to compete this year, and maybe those prospects will blossom and help us win for years in the future. But maybe the Mets really will be as bad as people make them out to be, and none of those prospects will ever become a Major League starter. The Celtics gave up a LOT for Kevin Garnett before this season started, "mortgaging their future" in a sense. I'd say it's paid off, wouldn't you?

Now, on the other side of town, I can't say that about the Yanks. With or without Santana they don't have a shot. They just can't decide if they're rebuilding or going for it.

They are a team made up of aging vets with declining defensive ranges and a handful of prospects. I don't see them having a legit shot at the East or the wild card. At best, there are four other teams better than they are.

If they land Santana, it's a step in the right direction, but they lose Melky - and that, in my mind, not only eradicates getting JS, but hurts their overall defense everyday. I can just picture Damon running after missed balls while base runners tear around the Diamond.

Yankee bashers, rejoice! These are the golden years were are entering.

Cheer up guys, it isn't over yet.

Besides, losing JS to the Yankees isn't the worst thing that could possibly happen. The Mets would still have their prospects and that would be something. At the least, they would still have options down the road.

With or with out Santana, they are a great team with a legit play off shot.

No point on even looking up the stats and debating the merits on this one. Even if it makes sense, their isn't a chance in the world that it happens.

For the most part, all GMs are afraid of taking a huge risk like this. CYA is more of the operating theory.

as they’ve lost most of their intelligent, passionate fans.

But what does that have to do with you?

I'd think the best scenrio would be this for both teams- santana, nathan, cuddyer, and everrett for Reyes, Gomez ,Pelfrey, and church....that way the twins get reyes and gomez the 2 players they want the mets get to keep f-mart mulvey hielman and humber and get a good bat in cuddyer and add bullpen help for the mets sure they have wagner to close but who wouldnt want nathan as your set up guy? Everrett can take reyes place sure not a great bat but one of the best fielders in the game
