Quote: Lohse has Three Suitors
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 6, 2008 5:05 pm

During a recent appearance on XM’s MLB Live, free-agent RHP Kyle Lohse said the following…

“Obviously, you want more years, and more security.  This is the first chance I have of getting security, every year up until now has been year to year.  Obviously, the more years the better now, for security reasons, but I’m just looking for a team that has a chance to win, and I just want to be a part of that…It’s right around probably 3 (teams). We’re a little ways off, but working towards getting something done.  It’s just a matter of getting together, waiting for some other trades/deals to happen or not, which influences the market.”

According to a report by George King roughly three weeks ago in New York Post, “It’s believed the Mets have made an offer to the 29-year-old for four years, but it’s not known if it is for the $10 million per he is seeking.”

However, the following day, in a report for Newsday, Ken Davidoff wrote that the Mets ‘do not seem particularly interested’ in free-agent starting pitchers Livan Hernandez, Carlos Silva or Lohse, ‘unless their prices drop.’

In 34 starts for the Reds and Phillies last season, the 29–year-old Lohse was 9–12 with a 4.63 ERA, while striking out 122 batters through 192 innings.

If trading away Pelfrey Humber etc to get Santana, then sure Lohse makes a good fit.

Anyone makes a good fit that’s a proven professional.

    If Santana isn’t coming then….no

    • circelli17 says:

I agree with this guy above… the only way you look at this kind of mediocre Steve Traschel like innings eater is if you’re forced to give up 3 or 4 pitching prospects which necessitates finding this kind of guy to fill out your staff (e.g. no prospects, just money)

    • The Glider says:

Omar will never give Kyle Lohse a four year deal. NEVER. And he’d be crazy if he did.

Silva was a much better than Lohse and Omar wouldn’t give him a four year deal.

  2. EncinoMets says:

Why can’t Pelfrey just be our “ace” next season?
    Seriously.
Is is that unfathomable that he or Humber “click” during Spring Training.
Why are we selling low like the O’s sold low on Maine or the Bucs sold low on Ollie?
And can we get Ollie an extension already?

I think the Mets are sick the way they’re currently built.
    Seriously.
They were sick before the collapse, and it happened, but I think they’ll learn from it & grow.
They got so much youth that I believe will work out its kinks by mid-season, and probably the be most exciting team to watch.

    • Gland says:

      Huh? Really?

    • Number41 says:

      well said, mr wilpon…

    • Gina says:

      “They got so much youth”

      ?

      • EncinoMets says:

Yeah, they really do (I think)

I wouldn’t have traded Reyes or Wright 4 years ago and I don’t want to trade F-Mart & Pelfrey now.

Pelfrey was rushed (a little, he needed more seasoning) & Humber got injured, TJ surgery usually needs 2 years to fully recover.

IMHO, I would think this would be their year to break out.
Trading so many high-ceiling, on the cusp of proving themselves (maybe) players when the Yankees & Red Sox are only offering 1 high-ceiling prospect each is a desperate move that makes little fundamental sense in negotiating.

I think Omar is playing his cards perfectly, knowing he has leverage (the National League), and multiple high-ceiling players (even if they aren’t as seasoned) he is ready to part with.
I optimistically believe the Twins will trade him to the Mets (eventually) but are trying to squeeze another great prospect out of them.
Omar keep playing tight, if it happens good, if not move on.

    • Trumpzilla says:

Why can’t Pelfrey just be our “ace” next season?

      Because he stinks

    • Encino Mets: It doesn’t even have to be Pelf. We’ve got a LOAD of talent. LET THE KIDS PLAY.

  3. stickguy says:

Even though it is still the first week of January, I am going to go ahead and nominate Encino for the coveted “most optomistic Met fan” award for 2008. Looks like he has a good chance to be in the finals!

I do agree 100% that they need to get Ollie that extension, and soon, if possible.

Other than that, Pelfrey clicking isn’t impossible. Maybe not to be the Ace, but certianly to have a very good year (think Maine when he broke out).

The Mets definitely would be selling low on him. Humber I don’t see having a breakout year, but he could at least establish himself as a ML pitcher this year.

And they do have a lot of talent, and just might kick some serious butt.

    • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Agreed. I am still hoping we get Santana without giving up Pelfrey or F-Mart. They are just too much to give for what is essentially a bidding cost to the Twins for the right to sign what amounts to an expensive (but worth it, unlike Zito) free agent.

  4. stickguy says:

Oh, forget Lohse. Hard to imagine that you are getting more than he has shown so far, and that is mediocre at best.

Might just as well try to snag Morris for 1 year by taking on the contract (for some nobodies). He is still probably a better pitcher, and you only have to make a 1 year commitment.

    • EncinoMets says:

I was thinking the same thing about Morris. He was pretty pretty good against us in the 2006 playoffs (if I remember correctly).

Can’t we just trade “some nobodies” like you said and take a flyer on F. Garcia for the second half (depth w/ upside) and call it an off-season. Roll the dice on the young guys. I’d rather win & lose with them, then on a high-priced FA.

If I can draw a NY sport comparison, look at the NY Giants.
The 2006 team was pretty pretty good, they had some injuries, then a collapse, but snuck into the playoffs but lost the first game.
They did NOTHING during the offseason and everybody predicted they would finish last in the NFC East and Coughlin would get canned.
Look who’s come of age and is now hot to trot.

      NYC seriously lacks patience.
The 2 time champion Marlins, now they have patience and two more rings than us lately.

The Mets fans clamoring for Santana at all costs are the same ones at the poker table going all in with 9, 10 suited.
Dudes, have some patience before we get fleeced by the more patient teams.

  6. jerseymetsfan says:

even thinking about 4 years for lohse should get somebody fired…. if 4 years is ok for that stiff we should whoever and offer johan 12years

  7. LetsgoMets1 says:

    Please no Kyle Lohse.

  8. Gilch says:

encinomets is by far the biggest 1diot i have ever seen post … thank you .. ill be sure to invite u to my fantasy baseball league next year so i can draft pelfrey and trade him to you for brandon webb

    • EncinoMets says:

So you think I’m an idiot?
Ok. Great. But I don’t see your insightful justification.
Or any intelligence or thoughtfulness whatsoever.
Just a silly fantasy trade I wouldn’t accept, nor gave you any reason I would.
Among things I’ve said that you could have taken umbrage at, were that we should hold on to our young, high-ceiling AAA arms instead of frittering them away at a dime a dozen. And maybe, just maybe a prospect develops (wow! imagine that) and maybe eve becomes “ace” material, a la Kazmir.
I would be willing to part with 3 arms plus Gomez for Santana & Santana only, but wouldn’t be heart-broken and stressed out like some of you poor, suffering “I need to win now” fair-weather fans.

      • Gland says:

Well I’m not going to call you an “idiot”, because there’s no need to be rude, but your post was a bit out there. I mean c’mon, what exactly would lead you to believe that Pelfrey could be an ace next season? You asked if it was that “unfathomable” that he (or Humber) click in ST. Well Pelfrey did click in ST last year, and then he sh*t the bed in the big leagues.

And the whole youth thing doesn’t make much sense, because except for Reyes/Wright the whole team is going to be veterans.

        • stickguy says:

Veterans can be youth also. Mid-20s is still considered young in BB terms, even if they are veterans.

If pelfrey makes the rotation again, 3/5 of the SPs will be “youth” (Perez and Maine being the others.

On the field, Reyes and Wright obviously. Beltran and Church are still in their 20’s (or did Carlos hit 30?), but anyway, are still at least young enough to be considered in their “prime (26-32ish).

That Leaves Schneider (32 I think) and Castillo as just passing their prime, and Delgado, Alou and Duque as legit old farts that are about done.

Wagner and Pedro have some years, but they are hopefully still going to be “crafty veterans” for another year!

    • Gilch:

      1. Just because someone has an idea is different than yours doesn’tmake them an idiot; however, your comment shows that you are an unthinking automaton and a product of your impatient generation.

      2. EncinoMets ideas are not idiotic in the least. While you may disagree, they are logical, rational arguments. Your ad hominem statement displays your complete lack of intelligencefor rational discourse.

      3. Your fantasy baseball analogy is completely false and shows your inability to argue a point.

      4. Suck it h8ter!

      5. LET THE KIDS PLAY!

  9. cousinrk says:

This is another example of people overreacting and looking for reasons to jump down the throat of Omar and the Mets because of some dope with a newspaper column writing some rumor. I mean if the Mets made a 4 year offer to Lohshe wouldn’t he be on the team by now? This rumor was from George King who covers the Yankees not the Mets, and of course the next day there was a report saying the complete opposite.

Everyone yaps about “Freddy Coupons” and yet they believe they would spend 4 years at 30-40 mill on an average 5th starter. How is he cheap yet willing to spend money on a guy like that??

There is no way they are giving this guy a lot of money. At best it’ll be a late signing for insurance and he’ll probably get at most 2 years if they are even interested

  10. i’m really tired of hearing about Lohse, Garcia, Livan, Colon, etc. This is the NEW YORK Mets. This team is becoming a perennial contender, has a nice young core, has its own TV network, a stadium on the way….and they just raised our ticket prices a considerable amt. And they’re talking about Kyle Lohse and all these other hack pitchers? We lost out on Haren already. Bedard has seemed to vanish from our radar. And Santana doesn’t appear any closer than he did when the rumors first started. Time is winding down and should we not land Santana or Bedard, or at the very least Blanton, Omar has failed this organization — and us, the fans.

    • The Glider says:

I think you’re overreacting by blaming Omar. Omar is not at fault here. Who is supposed to get?

Haren? We simply didn’t have the chips.

Blanton? Beane is holding out for a Johann-like package for a middle tier pitcher.

Prior? Omar made him a better offer than the one he took. Prior gave the Padres a home town discount.

Colon, Lohse, Livan, Garcia? They’re all crapola.

Trading for Johann? We made our best offer and the Twins are holding out for more. Nothing Omar can do about it.

Right now, short of trading for Santana, our best move is inserting Heilman in the 5th spot and moving Pelfrey into the bullpen.

      • bonatom says:

        Yes..Omar IS at Fault here.

Bannister, Bell were horrendous trades. Besides… I do not believe the Mets lost in 2006 or 2007 Because of starting pitching.

at the end of 2007 ..We just couldn’t score runs and our bullpen couldn’t hold games.

        • SheaHeyKid24 says:

bannister and bell were not his best trades (though i suspect bannister never gets better than he was last season anyway) but you conveniently forgot about ollie and maine. two guys who at the time we got them were considered THROW INS.

I distinctly remember people on this message board slamming omar for those deals, saying we got nothing. no doubt those people have short memories and everyone on here now will say they loved the deals.

armchair gms with 20/20 hindsight is all you people are.

        • MudvilleNine says:

The bullpen couldnt hold games because the bullpen was exhausted. The starting pitching was pretty much 4 (or 5) and done. The games they won down the stretch was when the starters gave them a good 7 innings. Watching the games there was always one reliever that actually did come in and finally close the door after the others imploded and that guy was the one who wasnt used the day before. He had rest. Next game, since he did the job the day before, Willie brought him in again and he imploded, because they were all so tired that one day of rest wouldnt allow them to pitch on back to back games. Remember though, Willie was taking advice on who to warm up and bring in from Peterson. You would think the pitching coach would make sure that the guy with the rest was the first guy in.

        • The Glider says:

Yo, yo, yo. Every team has bull pen problems especially at the end of the year - except for the Phillies, of course, who caught lightening in a bottle at the end of the year.

Each year, a team’s bullpen is usually a craps shoot. Next year, maybe Duaner comes back healthy and is our set up man; maybe Sosa comes back strong (he has great stuff!); maybe one-pitch Pelfrey goes to the bullpen and learns how to maximize the use of his sinker there.

Omar has made a couple of bad trades along the way (Lindstrom and Owens to the Marlins, ugh!). But, generally, I’m satisfied with Omar and Willie.

      • dcullin23 says:

My friend you answered your own question; of course senor Omar is to blame. If he doesn’t have the “chips” to make a deal who do you blame, the peanut vendor. ? Senor Omar has destroyed the franchise by being narrow minded!!

    • Gland says:

Who else should he get then? Seriously, give us some names.

  11. I hope the phillies re-sign him

  12. craigswandive says:

    Oh geez

This is like the next coming of Steve Trachsel. Why bother? We can’t find one of prospects to pitch to a .500 4+ERA?

  13. Loh-she has no business wanting a 4 year deal. But whatever, we’ll probably sign him.

In other news, any big blue fans here? I’m so proud of my giants.

  14. jerseymetsfan says:

just a quick question??? how many ex- expos do we now have on the acitve roster?? it seems omar wants that back..

  15. Les Gomez says:

I’d rather sign Leiber for one year and see if any of the kids develop. Why sell low on the kids and/or overpay for a proven slob?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Agreed. If Lieber comes cheaper, make the move. At least he’d be motivated to burn the Phillies, unlike the rest of the team, apparently.

  16. Les Gomez says:

And get Ollie is extension!!!!!!!!! Don’t let it play out next winter!

    • SuperGrover says:

With Boras as his agent….it’s going to play out.

Peraz was being shipped out in a trade right after we got him, that fell through.

      We got lucky.

Omar has failed to trade for a starting pitcher for two years now.

And Randolph should have been fired at the end of the season for refusing to believe his team quit on him.But Omar is smart enough to keep him around as a sacrafical lamb should they tank again.

Met fans buy into the hype that are prospects are better then what they really are.

Just like every spring Met posters are always predicting that the offense will score 7-9 runs a game.Well we all know that they finished in third in the NL.Not good enough to get us to the playoffs.
When your so called Ace can’t go in the most important game of the season and your Hall of Fame (300) starter can’t get two outs in the first inning,I say you need starting pitching….period.

But there wasn’t anything wrong in what EncinoMets posted.Everyone is entitiled to his opinion.

  17. therealsince86 says:

This is way off topic but we need a new one.
What about this idea? The Angels are trying to get Konerko for a package of Howie Kendrick and E. Santana.
If that deal falls through could we work out something like this
Angels get Delgado, Gomez, and cash for Santana and Kendry Morales and Chone Figgins.
Morales can take Delgado’s spot, we lose some on offense but gain the SP we need and a young 1B to take over. I actually think with time Kendry could be a decent hitter.
For this season Figgins can play almost every position and then take Alou’s spot next season.

Or on the other hand could we do a 3 way trade?
We get Kornerko from the Sox and Santana from the Angels
Angels get Delgado, Humber, and cash
Sox get Howie Kendrick and Gomez

These are just off topic ideas from a bored Mets fan that is tired of the Santana, Blaton, Loshe rumors.

    • stickguy says:

I like the thinking. A bit out of the box, but at least you are trying to be creative about solving porblmes for 2008, and beyond.

If Omar could somehow keep the team competitive this year, and actaully fill 2 gaping holes before they open up in 2009 (LF and 1B), it really would leave nothing to do but chase after more pitching.

Not sure about Ervin, but hey, at least it is a santana topic!

Assuming the whole Johan chase finally ends, I hope Omar does go for some creative deals like this (maybe not those guys but along these lines). Snell/Nady, that kind of stuff.

I do think the team, as is, is good enough to win the division (and make the WS) this year, assuming the normal amount of good breaks and health. Still, 1 more legit ML SP would be a very good thing to add, especially for depth.

Doesn’t have to be an “ace” if the price is too high. another nice Maine/Perez level guy would shore up the rotation, and at worst, a Morris type to keep the 5 hole warm.

      • Cousinjoey says:

I agree. I think the Mets are close enough (as is) to compete in 2008. I would love to get Johan too, but part of me wishes that we had some prospects that gave some confidence that they will eventually, be worthy of the hype.

For example, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes have had shown flashes of brilliance already. Clay Bucholoz (sp?) threw a no-hitter for crying out loud. Our guys haven’t really given us much hope that they can be special. Maybe with the exception of FMart. But even he is so far off, to be considered special yet.

One thing for sure, Johan is SPECIAL!

  18. Tramadol no prescription….

  19. darkstar73 says:

who cares? Why would anyone care about that here? He’s overrated by Yankee fans, everyone in the country knows that. He certainly doesn’t project better than Gomez or Martinez. He’s ahead of them at this point, but by no means does he project better, if that’s what you’re getting at. As for who I’d like in centerfield…I’ll take Belran.

  20. And this friends is representational of the new generation of Mets fans. I, for one, am ashamed for the entire organization.

    PS LETS THE KIDS PLAY!
