I agree. I think the Mets are close enough (as is) to compete in 2008. I would love to get Johan too, but part of me wishes that we had some prospects that gave some confidence that they will eventually, be worthy of the hype.

For example, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes have had shown flashes of brilliance already. Clay Bucholoz (sp?) threw a no-hitter for crying out loud. Our guys haven't really given us much hope that they can be special. Maybe with the exception of FMart. But even he is so far off, to be considered special yet.

One thing for sure, Johan is SPECIAL!

I like the thinking. A bit out of the box, but at least you are trying to be creative about solving porblmes for 2008, and beyond.

If Omar could somehow keep the team competitive this year, and actaully fill 2 gaping holes before they open up in 2009 (LF and 1B), it really would leave nothing to do but chase after more pitching.

Not sure about Ervin, but hey, at least it is a santana topic!

Assuming the whole Johan chase finally ends, I hope Omar does go for some creative deals like this (maybe not those guys but along these lines). Snell/Nady, that kind of stuff.

I do think the team, as is, is good enough to win the division (and make the WS) this year, assuming the normal amount of good breaks and health. Still, 1 more legit ML SP would be a very good thing to add, especially for depth.

Doesn't have to be an "ace" if the price is too high. another nice Maine/Perez level guy would shore up the rotation, and at worst, a Morris type to keep the 5 hole warm.

This is way off topic but we need a new one.
What about this idea? The Angels are trying to get Konerko for a package of Howie Kendrick and E. Santana.
If that deal falls through could we work out something like this
Angels get Delgado, Gomez, and cash for Santana and Kendry Morales and Chone Figgins.
Morales can take Delgado's spot, we lose some on offense but gain the SP we need and a young 1B to take over. I actually think with time Kendry could be a decent hitter.
For this season Figgins can play almost every position and then take Alou's spot next season.

Or on the other hand could we do a 3 way trade?
We get Kornerko from the Sox and Santana from the Angels
Angels get Delgado, Humber, and cash
Sox get Howie Kendrick and Gomez

These are just off topic ideas from a bored Mets fan that is tired of the Santana, Blaton, Loshe rumors.

With Boras as his agent....it's going to play out.

Peraz was being shipped out in a trade right after we got him, that fell through.

We got lucky.

Omar has failed to trade for a starting pitcher for two years now.

And Randolph should have been fired at the end of the season for refusing to believe his team quit on him.But Omar is smart enough to keep him around as a sacrafical lamb should they tank again.

Met fans buy into the hype that are prospects are better then what they really are.

Just like every spring Met posters are always predicting that the offense will score 7-9 runs a game.Well we all know that they finished in third in the NL.Not good enough to get us to the playoffs.
When your so called Ace can't go in the most important game of the season and your Hall of Fame (300) starter can't get two outs in the first inning,I say you need starting pitching....period.

But there wasn't anything wrong in what EncinoMets posted.Everyone is entitiled to his opinion.

Veterans can be youth also. Mid-20s is still considered young in BB terms, even if they are veterans.

If pelfrey makes the rotation again, 3/5 of the SPs will be "youth" (Perez and Maine being the others.

On the field, Reyes and Wright obviously. Beltran and Church are still in their 20's (or did Carlos hit 30?), but anyway, are still at least young enough to be considered in their "prime (26-32ish).

That Leaves Schneider (32 I think) and Castillo as just passing their prime, and Delgado, Alou and Duque as legit old farts that are about done.

Wagner and Pedro have some years, but they are hopefully still going to be "crafty veterans" for another year!
