According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians have made an offer to C.C. Sabathia, in an effort to keep him in
Cleveland beyond next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.
…i think it stands to reason that sabathia will seek, and will get, at least a deal similar to what was recently agreed to by the Padres and Jake Peavy, which will essentially pay him roughly $90 million over the next six seasons, which is right on par with his contemporaries…
…point is, here we go again, another home-grown ace is being approached with an extension that will keep him from hitting the open market…and so, if the Mets can trade for quality, young, established pitching now, they have to do it now, because they may not get the chance through free agency…

Without tampering :) I am sure we could find a “friend” of CC’s to let him know that we will give him 6 years 120 if he just waits and hits the market? I can’t see him taking that much less money when he knows that the Yankee’s/ Mets/ Sox will be looking to add to their rotation and pay him big bucks. He should just pitch another great season and sign the big contract.
It takes big ones to leave $90M on the table and risk injury to try for 30% more. I get that’s a big amount, but we’re talking about monopoly money here and more than likely he’ll have another big contract after this anyway.
Granted, he’s been reliable, but last year he pitched his highest innings count since 2002 and beat it by 30 innings! I think he takes the extension. Unless he wants out of Cleveland, there’s no reason not to. He’s on a competitive team, in a comfortable environment and is set for his, and his grandchildren’s, lives.
+5 Well said!
Omar better have a sick draft this year.. multiple first rd picks
btw… when is the draft? sooner or later?
It’s usually mid June.
And another good reason to try and reach an extension with Perez right now, even though you know he will be overpaid 9if that concept still exists anymore).
If he hits a big year and actually hits the open market (potentially the only stud that will) it will be a feeding frenzy.
totally agree, but i think you can wait till about may before you worry about that. unfortunately unless he’s blown away in both money and years (sadly 5-6 years is becoming the norm for anyone under 30) he prob wont sign an extension because of our friend scott boras. ugh.
This is the exact point!!! All MLB teams now have money..all of them. Stud Free agent Pitchers will no longer hit the open market. Peavey, Zambrano, CC and soon to be Santana will all sign extensions. They would be fools not to… Picthers have such a greater chance of becoming injured than postion players.
Who cares about CC, the metrs lost mike Difelice
