According to MiLB.com, Edgardo Alfonzo is batting .335 with five HR and 33 RBI in 54 Winter-League games.

The 35-year-old former Mets infielder signed an incentive-laden Minor League contract with the Rangers on Dec. 17.

Good Luck Fonzi, hope you do well for the Rangers (if he makes it).

good for fonzi. i hope he gets back to the show sometime. i always enjoyed watching him play. he played the game the right way, always using proper fundamentals. he was my favorite met during the late 90’s, earley 2000’s.
Go Fonzi!

dannyb January 8, 2008 at 11:20 am

Fonzi is cool.

I’ll always have a soft spot for Fonzie. Remember the grasnd slam in the 1 game playoff against the reds in ‘99? Remeber him being the most consistant on base hitter in 2000. Good luck with the comeback!

How about the 2HR game in the ‘99 playoffs against ‘Zona with The Unit pitching? Or tying up game 3 of the NLDS against SF, with Rob Nen pitching, leading to Benny’s walk off?

Kalihan42 January 8, 2008 at 11:54 am

ahhhh memories

chicowalkersucksballs January 8, 2008 at 1:03 pm

How about the 6-6 game vs. the Astros where he hit 3 HR’s? My favorite 90s/early 2000s Met, bar-none. Class act all the way, in every regard.

Always liked the Fonz. But, am I crazy in thinking that he was at least slightly overrated? I remember him being annointed the best two strike hitter, the most intelligent batter etc etc.

He was pretty good on a lot of awful Mets teams.

As I recall…
1) During his early years, Mets we on the upswing, getting better each year, especially offensively, from ‘95 through ‘99

2) Alfonzo was an exceptional 2 strike hitter (one of the best)

3) He was analyzed as a young player, much like Wright and Reyes of the last few years. His numbers were good, but part of the perception was that he was still getting there.

We all thought he’d be a steady .300, 25-30 HR for a long time.

Alfonzo represents one of the Mets best prospects of the 1990s, one of the best Mets of ‘99 and 2000 teams and one of Steve Phillips best moves – in ignoring all that and realizing that his best days were behind him.

Kalihan42 January 8, 2008 at 12:00 pm

I think he was older than he claimed when he entered baseball and the mets let him go right as his career seemed to be getting shaky. That being said I remember him hitting over .300 in 2001 when Piazza was on the DL and the mets situation was pretty bleak in the rest of the line-up (see Mo Vaughn and Jeromy Burnitz). I think he was key and did not get enough credit for the strong years he had even if they were short lived…

Can you imagine the ovation he would receive if he made a trip back to Shea with the Rangers?

Might even trump Mikey’s…

Don’t get crazy…

fyffem January 8, 2008 at 11:25 am

OMG, HGH?!?! Just kidding…..

Cactus January 8, 2008 at 11:26 am

$10 says he has a better season than Luis Castillo.

What is that a beer and a quarter of a hot dog?

Cactus January 8, 2008 at 11:34 am

parking for the first 4 innings.

Vinnie January 8, 2008 at 11:53 am

If you have a smart car maybe

darkstar73 January 8, 2008 at 11:42 am

better than Castilo? hahaha, i’ll take that bet, Fonzie is in winter leagues doing this, where Jose Lima is an ace. Make it $100 to make it more interesting and I’m certainly down.

stickguy January 8, 2008 at 11:29 am

I always liked him as a player. I hope he actually makes the Rangers, but mostly so there is no chance that he becomes available, and Omar picks him up! he can’t have much left at this point after years of chronic back issues, can he?

But, i wouldn’t take the bet on Castillo. I have a bad feeling he is going to really stink this year (and the 3 after that!)

Charlie January 8, 2008 at 11:41 am

Where’s my Robin Ventura, John Olerud, and Rey Ordonez update?

Giaco January 8, 2008 at 11:43 am

Best Infield Ever?

Tidewater January 8, 2008 at 11:50 am

that was an amazing year, to be sure. And Fonzi was one of my favorite Mets.

Vinnie January 8, 2008 at 11:51 am

What was it… 4 or 5 errors all year.. Just enough for us to make it to the 2000 WS and get beat by a bunch of juice bags.

chicowalkersucksballs January 8, 2008 at 1:06 pm

…and he got ROBBED of the gold glove by Pokey Reese.

How many other pro athletes has anyone ever heard of that spent their own money to run ads on taxis in town thanking the fans for supporting them….after being let go by the team and signing elsewhere?

Fonzie rules and holds all.

points guy January 8, 2008 at 11:51 am

defensively at least. But I gotta say, Kaz Matsui’s one bouncer to first was awe inspiring.

rosemarymets January 8, 2008 at 1:14 pm

fonz was one the my faves…great fielder and excellent in the clutch…would love to see him get some big hits with rangers vs the skankees who always beat the freakin rangers…
