According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, talks between the Cubs and O’s about 2B Brian Roberts are back on.

“This deal is almost certainly going to happen,” writes Rogers, “The only question is when and how much it is going to cost the Cubs.”

thanks to jason b for the link

…i can’t believe i ever thought that the Mets could acquire both roberts and Erik Bedard in the same deal…talk about being delusional…the hot stove must have been so hot i became dehydrated and delirious…

Not sure what he is going to cost, but kind of sad that the Cubs can get him, and we get 4 more years of the hobbling man that can’t get the ball out of the infiield.

oh, you must mean the same guy who had a .300 avg last year with a .360 obp hitting 2nd in our lineup and playing very solid D at 2nd, with albeit range that isn’t the same as it used to be (but still very capable), but still probably the best at turning the DP in the game.
Obviously Roberts is going to cost prospects, Castillo cost money (something a lot of you are complaining the Mets should spend more of, while we should use prospects for pitching…go figure).

you are so smart!

kendychavez January 9, 2008 at 12:22 pm

it’s the 4 years, man. he’s fine for now. two years from now? i doubt it

and his complete lack of power and constant bunting is frustrating to watch

bobabouy01 January 9, 2008 at 12:36 pm

“and his complete lack of power and constant bunting is frustrating to watch”

You’re kidding, right ?? Bunt single = base hit

.300 avg = on base 3 of every 10 plate appearances

.360 obp with David Wright and Beltran hitting behind him = great run production

hopefully the knee surgery lends to more SB’s this season (and maybe even improved range ?!)
Do I think he’ll be a top shelf starter in 3-4 years…no, but we could do a lot worse

After agreeing with your for a couple of days its nice to be back to normal. There is no way we should have traded our best prospects for a 2B when we could just sign Castillo and be done with it. He did fine with a barking knee last year and who knows he may be back to form this year after going under the knife. He cant hit the ball far but he still manages a good average and OBP which is more than good enough for the #2 hitter. Not to mention that I think an entire year of Wright behind him and Reyes in front may make his numbers even better.

Thank You!!–I know I’m not alone!

your not delusional Matt the orioles are delusional for not giving us their best player and a good 2B for Jorge Sosa!!!!

Stickguy, roberts prob wouldve cost us gomez…the orioles have no need to rid of him, they wont unless they get value, and you cant wait until this late in the offseason to hope that a team will trade their 2B when you do not have anyone else to possibly fill in shall the deal not ever happen

Cactus January 9, 2008 at 12:28 pm

I would trade Gomez for Roberts in a heartbeat.

Charlie January 9, 2008 at 11:49 am

Actually, Matt, the “hot stove” was never lit this year, so you probably were frozen into delirium.

BringBackDaveTelgheder January 9, 2008 at 11:51 am

It was stupid to waste 4 years on Castillo, when the alternatives are Hudson being a free agent next year, or trading for Mark Ellis as the A’s clean house. Both would be upgrades over Castillo.

Still, you’d have to think his contract may be moveable next year if we do go after Hudson.

therealsince86 January 9, 2008 at 11:58 am

If Castillo comes in and hits over .300 with a decent OBP and plays good defense there is no reason for Hudson anyway.
If he does not, this “horrible” contract can easily be moved if they Mets donate some cash or take on someone else’s salary problem.

LetsGetMetsmerized January 9, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Stupid would be not getting a 2bman in 2008 knowing you can upgrade in 2009. Smart is locking up the best option and if he is healthy you win, if not you cut bait and get that upgrade in 2009. It’s just money.

therealsince86 January 9, 2008 at 12:21 pm

I think that is what I just said with out the stupid part?

bobabouy01 January 9, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Yeah…..we all know how “cheap” Ellis would have come when dealing with Billy Beane !

guierllNO MOta January 9, 2008 at 11:54 am

BBDT…hudson was a terrible offensive player until the 1st half of last year….just remember that, however id still rather have him than castillo cause our defense would be silly

Giaco January 9, 2008 at 11:58 am

im suprised the mets didnt get him. Don’t we go after players who do steroids?

Charlie January 9, 2008 at 12:01 pm

No, we only sign them to two year extensions after we find out that they used, were caught, and were suspended for steriods.

Vinnie January 9, 2008 at 12:04 pm

That is only if they suck. Roberts is way too good to fall in that category

ExileInLA January 9, 2008 at 12:22 pm

I read the Chicago Tribune article, and the comments posted below it. Some of the Chicago fans look like they could be Metsblog trolls…

dykstraw January 9, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Marcus Giles just signed a minor league deal with Colorado. Just saying.

tonylett January 9, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Yeah, luis (knees and hips of an 80 yr old) castillo is our
guy! locked up until the 2012 season. again, good goin’
omar!–we know you were in a bind as there were no other
options out there, giles, eckstein, iguchi, roberts, maybe hudson and of course gotay, just to start. But whats 20mil
of wilpons money especially for a fellow dominicano?

stickguy January 9, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I just like Roberts, and for some reason dislike .600 OPS Castillo. I realize we would have had to give up talent instead of $$ though. And 4 years?

steve333 January 9, 2008 at 10:37 pm

My original plan:
Jose Reyes, Heilman, and Humber and prospect for
Roberts and Bedard
Then sign Eckstein to replace Reyes.

Too bad Omar doesnt think outside the box.
