Buzz: Only Five Years for Johan
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 9, 2008 9:42 am

Yankees VP Hank Steinbrenner recently told Newsday that his team will not give Johan Santana more than a five-year contract if they acquire him from the Twins.

…well, the way i understand it, santana is not approving a trade unless he gets a substantial extension worked out in advance…the thing is, the sense i get is that, like the Yankees, the Mets are reluctant to give santana a seven-year deal as well…for what it’s worth, it is very difficult to get a pitcher’s contract insured if it is more than a five-year deal…

…my question, though, is will santana accept a five-year extension, to start after the end of next season, along with a substantial raise for this coming season as well, so that he’d be essentially getting a six-year guarantee starting right now

According to the Boston Herald, Santana’s agent has said he is seeking seven years and at least $140 million.

    Mmmmmmm, Santana post.

For the 1000th time this offseason… I still believe Santana will end up in the Bronx… Young Hankenstein will eventually turn the screws on Cashman and lowball the Twins into making the deal… They aren’t concerned about money or payroll… It’s a negotiating tactic…

this guy is a f ‘in joke.. I would LOVE to see them trade hughes, give santana a seven year deal (Hank never sticks to his word) and on opening day Santana tears his rotater cuff…and then i woke up and he won 23 games for the Yankees in 08′

In Hankspeak (which is the official language in the Bizarro World where Hank learned from the best Mr. Mxyzptlk) that means the yankees are prepared to offer him a 10 year extension. Hank Steinbrenner is a clown.

    • Ric says:

Speaking of Mr. Mxyzptlk, if we ger Hank Steinbrenner to say his name backwards will he disappear? I swear everytime I hear that guy speak I think of that old Jon Lovits liar character on SNL. ” only 5 years for Johan, yeah that’s the ticket!”

    Ok here’s the plan.
Have Castillo call this morning and say “I was reading the paper and the Mets will” That can’t be considered tampering, the Mets will what?
Then Johan tells the Twins its 7 years or no trade.
Then the Mets call the Twins and say look, we just want you to know that we would love to have the opprotunity to meet Santana’s demands.
That way Santana knows the Mets will pay up and the Twins know. Thus, the only trade market for Santana would be the METS!

  6. Bench5urvivor says:

    Yankees + Hank = tampering!!!

Come on Bud, actually do something from high upon your throne as king of baseball

I still think he winds up a Met if he moves at all.

And I’m confortable with either scenario. I’d just love to keep 2 of Pelfrey, Guerra and F-Mart.

I think Omar has been playing this poker game correctly. Based on need . . . the Twins have the greater need to move him than the Mets need to aquire him. That should win out in the long run (unless the Yanks blink) and a 4 - 5 player deal - Gomez/Church, Mulvey/Pelfrey, Heilmann/Humber and others (don’t sell low on Carp, please! He may be worth more mid-season) plus the 5 year extension to seal the deal.

Otherwise . . . Omar pulls a rabbit we haven’t considered from his hat or plays the kids. No Blanton at those prices.

It will take us going the entire contract to get him. Maybe some unique player options at the end?
5 years with 2 player option years that vest as long as he pitches 200 innings the year before or 400 total in the previous 2 years.
Or Cerrone’s extension and a player option making it the total 7 years. Either way, I think that is our biggest bargining chip. Johan will pay for his last 2 years himself in tickets and marketing over the 5 other seasons.

ooooo poker speak….Omar went all in already and he’s seeing if the other players will call him or raise it, he’s got a prett good hand, but he’s low stack at the table and other people have better hands but do they want to risk it….

    Sincerely, Norman Chad

Yayyy Santana post! We’re all hanging our hats on this guy coming to Queens and its just not happening. It’s just not.

Your looking at your 2008 Mets (for the most part).
New slogan: Your Season has come…but don’t you wish it never did?

Btw, I’m sure this is rumor but I was told the Mets could have made a Santana trade if they included FMart in the package of 4 prospects….and were reluctant to do so. I’d hope thats a bunch of BS, because if its true….well…what else can you say except for the Mets being braindead. FMart could be a great player…but outfielders are a dime a dozen. 2 time Cy Young award winners, when your team desperately needs an ace….more of a rare opportunity to seize the day.

    • Coolpapabell says:

From what I understand, F-Mart and Gomez are already on the table. That could be why Pagan was aquired.

      • Coolpapabell says:

Well, I don’t know if both have been offered but I do know they gave them the option of one or the other, and I get a sense from all the recent Santana posts that the Mets did put both on the table. Then again, the deal should be done by now if both are on the table.

Please will someone stop the insanity already. How is it that its January 9th and this trade is still holding everyone up from making other deals?

  11. HOFMets57 says:

All this Santana talk is both scintillating and unbearable…

  12. gowrightgo says:

    More Santana minor updates….

It seems the enthusiasm for all things Santana appears to be waning a bit. We are all realizing slowly but surely that if a deal is coming, it is far away and nothing is close with anyone. You hear Bedard is going to the M’s. Haren left already to the D Backs. That takes 2 potential suitors out of the mix for Santana.

I think the Twins are destined to lose this battle here. Fortunately for them, the Sox, and both NY teams are still claiming they are in this.

But I am thinking both the spanks and Sawx are really just trying to steer the conversation enough to keep Santana away from the other one.

    What is left…really only us.

This does not mean he gets dealt. Just that it is growing increasingly clear that he is not being traded to those 2 AL teams.

My prediction….he starts the year a Twin and they make no announcement regarding this from now through spring training. So we keep hanging on innuendo rather than fact. Unless the GM makes an announcement from the Twins….we stand idly by

  13. mad_mike says:

Hey Twins - Trade the damn guy already *&^%$###*&^

  14. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Gomez, Heilman, Mulvey, Guerra & Gotay for Santana.

    Obama for New York 2008!

  15. jut04 says:

i think the twins are gonna trade both santana and nathan so why not trade both together? The Mets need bullpin help to a set up guy and Nathan can be that. I See A Scenerio as this Santana Nathan and Swarzack* *The Twins best prospect for Gomez, FMArt, Pelfry, Mulvey, Heilman and Humber

  16. HOFMets57 says:

    We don’t need Johan??

Just a little reminder: The Mets now hold the record for worst regular-season collapse in Major League Baseball history…

Bartolo Colon: Hmm…Can’t even hit 90 anymore. Hasn’t pitched a full season in 3 years. 6.34 ERA last season. 100 lbs. overweight. NO THANKS.

Kris Benson (Part II): Just had rotator cuff surgery. Married to Playboy bunny who threatens to sleep with everyone on the team (EVEN with Ramon Castro). Last pitched 200 innings in 2000. 4.87 ERA. NO THANKS.

Then again, I want to win a World Series. I guess mediocrity is appealing to some…

  17. HOFMets57 says:

    Clarificiation.

A rotation of 2 rotator cuff recoveries (Pedro & Benson).
A starting pitcher who weighs more than Michael Strahan.
And a pitcher whose age is really 44 (El Duque).

A starting rotation of question marks and a pot belly?

    Priceless.
