Note: Hagin Targeted for WFAN
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 9, 2008 9:06 am

According to Mike Puma in the New York Post, the Mets and WFAN are ‘targeting’ veteran broadcaster Wayne Hagin to replace Tom McCarthy.

Hagin has called games for the A’s, Giants, White Sox, Rockies and Cardinals.

…from what i can gather, neither WFAN nor the Mets had much direction on this once Andy Freed declined their offer to remain in Tampa Bay…initially i believe they were open to every one, from triple-a broadcaster to veteran MLB voices, though i am not sure where they stand today…

…personally, i’d rather they hire an unknown triple-a voice, or some one who at least knows the Mets organization…

…thanks to Peter Wade for the link

As long as Hagan isn’t that guy for the White Sox that yells “He Gone” every time a batter strikes out, I’d be more than happy to listen to him.

Does Rickey Henderson have a job?

    Fran Healy!

I still think Eddie C would be the man for the job…

I think Eddie is waaaaay to awkward sounding when he fills in….its like he gets too excited and can’t call it as it happens. Granted, we are incredibly spoiled w/ Rose and Cohen…..even Thorne was awesome…..but listening to him was always somewhat painful for me because he struggles at times.

He does do an awesome job on mets pre/post game tho!

As a guy who lives in St. Louis, Hagin was by far the least annoying of all the Cardinals announcers … Mike Shannon and the waste of flesh that now calls nationals games (Carpenter) along with other idiots and homers (Joe Buck included) are much worse.

That being said, I agree that I’d rather a fresh voice than a retread.

I agree . . . let’s give a new guy a shot. Whith Howie as a guide, it should be a great opportunity for him to learn the right way and have someone to cover his gaffes as he grows into the job.

Since I can’t post this in the JR thread, let me say this…I wish some reporter would have the guts to address with Willie or Omar where Jose’s head was and where it is going. Jogging to 1b, non chalanting in the field, bonehead running plays (stealing 3rd with two outs and DW up I think on more than one occasion) How come no one addresses the “dog” that was Jose Reyes for most of last year?

I think Eddie Coleman should be given the shot. He knows the team well, has a report with them, and is classy. He is honest, but not over bearing. Coleman has suffered through some dreadful Mets teams, and he has been a real trouper filling in while Howie, Gary, Murph, etc. were unavailable. He should be given serious consideration.

If not, dig into former players, and Darryl Hamilton comes to mind.

As long as it’s NOT Al Leiter.

From what I can gather, opinion of Wayne Hagin isn’t too high. He’s the guy who surmised on-air that Todd Helton was on the juice.

it really is sad that we’d go out of market to some unknown
instead of addressing the situation in house or atleast trying
to get the best guy for the job. whos makin’ this call ?
it sounds like an omar player move.
