Buzz: Yanks No Longer Talking to Twins
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 11, 2008 6:29 pm

According to the Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, citing ‘a source,’ the Yankees are no longer talking with the Twins about LHP Johan Santana.

…obviously this is great to hear, but i’ll believe it when santana is either on the Mets, stays with the Twins or any place other than the Bronx

On the hand, other sources tell Rosenthal that by passing on Mike Cameron, who agreed to a deal with the Brewers today, it ‘could indicate’ the Yankees are still considering Santana.

…that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me…i mean, it seems to me that had they signed cameron, Melky Cabrera would now be expendable…and melky’s availability could indicate interest in santana…not the other way around

…at any rate, during the last few days, i have written repeatedly that the Mets are the only major, pro-active team that is dealing with the Twins and things between the two sides are progressing…the thing is, the emphasis is on ‘pro-active,’ meaning other teams must certainly be monitoring the situation…

…i’ll say this, though, i’m getting pretty tired of this…i mean, i feel like i run SantanaBlog.com, not MetsBlog…i want so badly to start thinking about spring training, the roster, schedule, etc, but it’s all a waste if there is a realistic chance that santana ends up in Queens, since the entire dynamic changes…what’s worse, from what i can tell, the entire league is waiting on this situation, not just you and i…seriously, there are other trades between other teams, free agents, uninvolved GMs, etc, all of which are on hold…it’s getting a little ridiculous…

That’s only one side of the story. From the same article:

The Yankees had pursued Cameron, but their decision to pass on him indicates that they still could be considering a trade for Twins left-hander Johan Santana. They might not have been willing to absorb the salaries of both Cameron and Santana, sources say.

  2. MetsAllTheWay says:

that makes no sense because if your going to trade Cabrera they would have needed to sign someone like Cameron for CF, there not going to put Johnny Damon and his terrible arm back in CF.

  3. I think what is needed is for all parties involved to fly to Camp David and have Jimmy Carter mediate a deal.

  4. SodaPopinski says:

is there any way to get a compilation of metsblog postings that state that the yankees are either out or back in the santana race?

I’m willing to bet it would be over 20 postings.

  5. EncinoMets says:

I think the Yankees can absorb what ever they want.

I look at it like with Cameron going to the Brewers (I like that),
than the Yankees would be more inclined to hold onto Melky (good for the Mets).

I’m going crazy about this pseudo Mets trade and like everybody else just want a conclusion already, either way so I can sleep better, but still strongly believe Omar is bidding against himself and should stick to his “very very good” offer of
Gomez, Guerra, Mulvey, & Humber, and a thank you have a nice day.

    Go get em Omar.
    Today if possible.

  6. Kalihan42 says:

Camerons agent used the skanks to get a better deal from the brew crew. That looks pretty obvious. Rosenthol doesn’t make any sense.

    • EncinoMets says:

Rosenthal likes to be sensational, like most sports writers.
I’ve never liked him, since he always would prop up the Braves and poo-poo the Mets at every chance.

      • EncinoMets says:

        Can’t believe I just said poo-poo.

        • Gland says:

I kind of like him, but for another reason. A few years back I once e-mailed him a Mets question and he actually took the time to not only answer but comment on where I lived (I had signed the e-mail with my name and city) and tell me a story about how he’d been there before. I thought it was pretty classy.

  7. Nate W. says:

nice to know this isnt just pissing off Mets fans, and Yankee fans, and Red Sox fans, and Twins fans, but also pretty much all of MLB. way to go Santana and Minny…

once the Mets make a new formal offer, if they even feel the need to change thier last offer, the Twins will take a few days to agree to it, shop around for more from the Yanks and Red Sox, then we’ll still have to wait a few more days for the contract to be worked out. Its maddening, but it’ll be worth it when they get him in the end.

  8. Nate W. says:

… I think all of this Johan talk has driven John Delcos out of his mind. heh.

  9. QnsNative718 says:

I think when I read the words “Santana heading to Queens” Im going to insist someone slug me right in the face to see if I’m dreaming. My freakin head hurts…

  10. MetsRant says:

The Yankees want to remove Melky because he’s an over-rated pug faced flop with no range. They want Austin Jackson to be their future CF, probably. Plus, it clears up a roster space.

They are done with Santana but look for them to trade Melky to the NL for another lower teir pitcher. (Lower teir compared to Santana). Wouldn’t be shocked if they try to pry an Ian Snell or a good reliever from a team. Esp. Demaso Marte or somebody like that. Santana ain’t going to the Bronx and the Twins know he won’t want to stay in the AL and pitch in those 2 dreaded stadiums. That’s why this is going nowhere.

  11. BBmetsfreak36 says:

honestly i think johan is worth what the twins are asking but i also know we can get him for lower. i hope and i think that he will eventually be a met but i garantee they will keep on stalling no matter how much it pisses me off. just get it done although thats not gunna happen for a week or two possibly longer. He will most likely become a met for ovious reasons but i think a guy such as ruben gotay could replace martinez if we stall in our own way. be very interested, persistant and most of all stuborn. He’s worth our offer and martinez but bottom line we dont need to give them martinez.

  12. stickguy says:

Santana might be causing a log jam, but it isn’t going to last forever. It is getting to the point where teams can’t wait, and if they have other deals on the table, they wil lstart making them.

Same with FAs. At some point, teams are going to grab whats left, and the guys without contracts are going to get nervous and take something.

ANd once the action starts, it is going to happen fast and furious.

Hopefully Omar isn’t the one without a chair when the music starts.

ALthough quite possibly, the rest of the available options are so unappetizing, he may be looking at is as Johan, or stand pat. Or maybe offer Garcia or someone like that a deal, just to get some depth.

  13. crashtest says:

For those of you who don’t want to do this trade: minor league prospects rarely turn out, they could send the Twins 10 prospects and they’d probably be lucky to have 3 turn out to be everyday contributors at the major league level.

As for Santana, was just doing some research of the last 4 seasons (which were his first 4 full years as a starter). I noted his numbers for Wins, Winning %, ERA, SO, and IP and compared them with other “aces” out there. Santana lead a group of Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb, Barry Zito, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, Josh Beckett, C.C. Sabathia, Roy Halladay, and John Lackey. Santana lead this group in EVERY category. He is more than an ace, he is the best in the game hands down. Plus he’s only 28 and is known for his workout regimen, meaning that he has an above average chance of staying healthy and pitching at a high level for a long time. Also from what I’ve seen he’s a pretty good guy, friendly with the fans and media, gold-glove fielder, all of it. Make the trade!

I don’t recall seeing 1 post that said they wouldn’t love to have Johan on th eteam. It always comes down to the cost (players and $$). And while it isn’t my money, it does impact “my” team if it means the budget gets cut elsewhere.
