The Braves are close to trading
prospects to the A’s for OF Mark Kotsay, reports MLB.com.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the A’s would also have to pay a significant portion of Kotsay’s $8 million salary in 2008.
…this could be a good deal for the Braves, as long as kotsay is healthy…he’s a strong defensive outfielder, though not as a good as Andruw Jones, who he’ll be replacing…
In just 56 games for Oakland last season, the 32–year-old Kotsay hit .214 with 15 extra base hits.
Kotsay missed the final 106 games last season due to back pain.
…Update…8:45 pm…
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, will pay $5 million of Kotsay’s $7 million salary for 2008.

I hope this trade goes through. I heard that they are only paying half, so the braves are going to have to give a decent prospect. I never like Kotsay but I guess if he can regain his old form it may workout for Atlanta… hopefully not.
Oh, yeah. Now I am terrified of the Braves. Good lord what a joke they are.
I wouldn’t get too cocky. As much of a choke artist as Glavine is, he’ll get more of the 2 feet outside strikes there than he got at Shea and should help stabilize the Braves rotation.
ugh that reminds me. how frustrating is it going to be watching him pitch against us? if we don’t absolutely rock him every time out I’ll be furious.
as long as alou is healthy when we face glavine he’s in trouble. and i can’t see him getting david out either
How so? He’ll get squeezed there just like he got squeezed here.
Is anyone becoming concerned with how quiet Boston has been lately on the Santana front?
I would be if they really wanted him…..but they want him just to the extent that the Yankees want him…..so I’m not too bothered by it.
Is anyone else a little concerned that this site seems to be the only venue that has any Santana to the Mets news on it. TImes, Post, News… nothing. Don’t you think if anything was remotely imminent that the tabloids would’ve jumped all over it by this point?
There have been stories in both the Daily News and The Post the past few days about the Mets being in the race for Santana. While they fell short of saying we are the front runners they claim Omar could have Johan now if he would agree to include F-Mart in the deal. Omar insists that he wont give up Both top OF prospects in the same deal. Hopefully he will change his mind. Santana is worth it and OF’s can be replaced through free agency while aces are never available anymore. The articles also claim Hank and the Yanks are standing firm on their offer and our mostly out of the race. Also the Sox are only involved to drive up the price for the yanks. They both pray he goes to the Mets instead of eachother according to both the morning and afternoon shows on WFAN. Francesa still claims the Twins insist on Reyes but as Matt as said that just isnt true. Keep the faith and be cautiosly optimistic. Omar shouldnt wait though while we can have him now. All agree?
RE: Francessa’s claims….Matt almost hinted at that is being said almost as a scapegoat if the Mets don’t acquire Santana – almost so they can say…well, we were never going to give up Reyes so its ok….
No, I dont. I dont hope Omar changes his mind on trading both OF prospects, in fact I would prefer if he decided that were both untouchable, along with Guerra. I also dont agree that Omar shouldnt wait, why shouldnt he? If you needed a big screen TV intime for the superbowl a month or so from now, would you pay an extra 30 percent just to have it right now? I wouldnt. I also disagree that you can “just go get an outfielder in free agency”. The free agent market is yielding less talent every year then the year before, and then mediocre players that do make it too free agency like Carlos Lee and and Alfonso Soriano are getting enormous deals. Imagine what a real star player would cost you. I would love Santana, but not for the askig price of the Twins, and not for the extension that he wants. I think if the Mets didnt collapse last year and Omar didnt feel like his job might be on the line, he wouldnt even consider a move like this.
But we know better and we are smarter than that. We know the Twins have backed down off their Reyes demand. So if the Mets use that as an excuse I will only be more infuriated.
The thing that you have to realize though, is that the Wilpons and Omar Minaya dont care how infuriated are. I think you could probably be so distraught that we dont land Santana that you could jump off a bridge, and I still dont think they would care. Like I said yesterday, if this trade goes through, it will turn us into the Chicago Whitesox before long, and people will look back and say, wow, look at those ignorant Met fans, they celebrated like lunatics at what turned out to be one of the worst trades that they made for a while. It will make the Met fan base into more of a joke then it already is.
Did I miss something? When did Soriano become a mediocre player? I’d love to have a 40/40 guy in our outfield.
I guess you did, he doesnt draw walks, doesnt get on base much, strikes out a ton. He is pretty good, not great at all. Career 840 OPS, pretty solid, nothing great, and he got a 100 million dollar contract. There is more to baseball then home runs and RBI’s you know. Also, his career OPS is only about 25 points higher then Ryan Church. He isnt bad, but he isnt Grady Sizemore or Vlad Guerrero. Just because Soriano is on ESPN all the time doesnt mean he is elite. There are lots of better players then him in this league.
Why is the Mets fan base a joke? Are you including yourself among their numbers? Judging from your previous posts I have deduced that you are (a) not a Mets fan and (b) your assessment of the current state of free agency as it pertains to outfielders (as well as their value) is quite poor. Have a good day anyways.
Ok. I am not a Met fan because I am one of like 30 total people who thinks they are already the best team in the NL East and there is no reason to mortgage your future on one player, especially one player who wants to take up like 20 percent of a payroll over 100 million dollars? Okay. So, my free agent assesment is poor. Great. It would be absolutely wonderful if you gave a thought on why you feel this way, but what am I thinking, people on Metsblog dont use numbers and statistics to support their claim, they use MLB the Show, and Sportscenters core group of analysts like Steve Phillips and Buster Olney and the demented and senile Peter Gammons. What is remotely not true about saying that the quality of the free agent market has gotten worse over the last 5 years or so? Is it true, or not? Andruw Jones just got 18 mil a year coming off 724 OPS. If he was had a typical Andruw year he would have gotten 6/150, because this guy is 5X the player that Soriano is. So, tell me what was incorrect about saying that the free agent market is not producing as many impact players as it once did, the players that are solid but not great like Soriano and Lee are getting huge deals, and when a real star comes along he will cost 23 or 24 mil a year to lock up. And believe me, I am as diehard a Met fan as there is, I watched them through the reign of terror (Duquetee), watched Art Howe looking like a deer in the headlights, and watched Steve Phillips pass up on A-Rod and Vlad Guerrero. I was as pissed off as you guys are now. I love how being confident in the team I root for and not wanting to blow up our future only to give out the worst contract in baseball history that would involve a tremendous amount of risk, and willingness to gamble Santana will remain completely healthy for the next 6 seasons., somehow equates to me not being a real Met fan. I am sorry that you arent able to debate back with me using stats and facts, but only the absurd inferences you have managed to make about me after reading about 4 posts of mine. Have a good day anyway.
PS. People who say anyways are usually very ignorant.
How did I know this would illicit a War and Peace-length post? “Anyways” I didn’t read it because I’m going outdoors. Enjoy your day hunched over your computer beating off to OF stats.
Again, these are normally the type of posts that people will come up with when they are beaten in a point, and have nothing factual or contructive to add to a discussion. You make fun of the length of my posts, and tell me to jerk off to stats and whatnot, all this tells me is that youare not very intelligent.
Whoever thinks Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano are mediocre players is a clown… They easily add a great deal of impact to any lineup. Perennial All-Stars are not considered mediocre.
They are both extremely overated. Neither one of them is a star. They are both solid players, nothing more. Juat like your friend Blue_N_Orange, you dont try to revoke my point with any statistical evidence, or numbers, or any other sort of information, you just tell me that they are all stars and I am a clown. Well here is my comeback. Anybody that uses all star appearances to judge a player is an even bigger clown. I shouldnt have said mediocre, but they certainly are not star players. Even if you only take offense into account, neither is a star. If you care about defense, then that lowers their value even further. My main point was, these guys are not star players at all and both got monstrous deals.
Dear nrmax88:
You sound like a real blowhard.
I’m not going to put forth any statistical evidence to back up that claim, either.
So there.
Matt, Kotsay isn’t that good with the glove anymore. His range is been badly destroyed by injuries and they’d be asking him to play Center, not a Corner. It’s a bad idea to be giving up serious prospects for him. If their nobodies, then no big loss, if they’re significant prospects the Braves are making a bad deal here.
If the A’s are paying a large portion of his salary as suggested, then they are basically buying the prospects. This is how many teams get better talent back than is normally warranted for a player.
Kotsay doesn’t even have the production of Ryan Church & he gets hurt every single year. Yawn. I hope they have fun without Andruw chasing every freakin ball down.
Kostay is a leadoff hitter. Reyes doesnt have the production of Church either, does that make him a bad player? I am not saying Kotsay is great, but your reasoning was weak.
If we werent so lefty dominated in our line-up I would want Omar to consider a deal for Kotsay especially after we trade our young OF’s for Santana (if we do I mean). He has a decent stick but again we prefer a righty bat in the line-up.
reyes is a shortstop, church is a corner outfielder. more offensive output is expected from an easy defensive position, as opposed to the 2nd hardest one on the field.
I can already see it coming… Mark Kotsay, the Met Killer..
Might happen. And quite often it is the seemingly insignificant deals (at the time) that end up having the biggest impact.
Hey StickGuy, how are you? I always seem to agree with your posts so I am interested in your thoughts on this whole Santana thing. Would you give up F-Mart along with the other 4 mentioned prospects to get Santana now?
Kotsay stinks, period. Average CFer, can’t hit. However, put on a Brave uniform and become Met killer.
Braves lineup is better than most
but their bread and butter is pitching
I would not be laughing at the Braves or the Phillies
Deal has been agreed to by both sides. Physicals are Sunday, barring any red flags there it will be announced afterwards.
A’s get Devine a nice RH relief pitcher with some upside. Have control of him for 6 seasons also.
Braves get Kotsay and only pay 2M as Athletica are paying 5+ M in this deal.
Should leave enough for the braves to make a serious run at Fuentes of the Rockies.
Good move with a chance to be great if Kotsay can remain healthy.
