I've said it already a few times....I don't want Santana. My thoughts are he is on the decline. He is not the reigning Cy Young from the AL and his WHIP and ERA have risen pretty steadily in the last 3 years while his win totals have begun to shrink from the guaranteed 19 - 20 to now 15 last year with 13 losses. He also is starting to give up the long ball pretty regularly.

While he is still better than any pitcher on the Mets roster and better than many in the NL...he is no longer the top pitcher in the game. With Haren, Webb, Peavy clearly all his equal and others like Hamels, Cain, Lincecum, etc on the rise....I can see buying and paying him a kings ransom coming back to bite us both in the short and long term.

The problem is the alternatives seem too expensive also in terms of talent. Yet...I think we should spend 2/3rds of the 5 players discussed and get Snell, Lincecum, Cain, or Kazmir and at least we will have pitchers who are rising on the ace charts and are still young enough to grow into their careers.

Santana has peaked already and while still terrific, he is no longer the best pitcher in either league and is about to get the most money ever paid to a pitcher in the history of the game. Seeing as we are trading for the most expensive pitcher in the game who is no longer the best pitcher in the game....only the best in the NL east, I would pass or at least reduce the trade package from its current iteration. Take out Guerra and Fmart, deliver them Gomez, Pelfrey, Humber and Mulvey. If they need a 5th guy....think guys like Niese or Vineyard rather than Guerra and Fmart.

If we drop our top 3 most ready pitcher into the deal.....we will need to trade again or possibly look to snare a FA flier on Colon, Jennings or Lohse to give us some support for the obvious DL issues we will have with Duque and likely Pedro in his siesta

Yeah, Omar will have to do something creative to keep the faith without Santana, it's come to that. Maybe plowing through the FA mrket by signing all of Garcia and Colon (if he bounces back) with Dotel?

I know it's painful, but try to watch a little of a knicks game at the garden. There is no worse of a product you could possibly lay out there than the highest paid team with the worst record and only getting worse, yet since Dolan is still making money it doesn't change as fast as if people didn't buy tickets in advance. It will never turn into 100,000 people. Too many people will still go to games even if they aren't a contender, which the Mets will still be even without Santana.

Good luck with your statements, and wave hello on the TV to the people who bought your tickets.

ha -- exactly itsmetsforme... you buy a 7 pack and 3 other deals and then make a stand? They have your business and they know you'll be back -- you won't go to another team and after a year you'll buy tickets again.

Don't buy anything if you want to make statements.

That's like walking out of the supermarket with a bag of groceries complaining about the selection and saying that now you aren't coming back until next week.

nah -- a little higher up i commented on their comparison. The disturbing part to me is the Hampton comparison. Check those pe-Mets stats. He was a stud with a similar style.

wow, i looked up Zito's stats pre-2007 and was expecting just a slight dropoff from Johan now, especially with Johan's down year -- and it's amazing. Zito was almost a one year wonder who then bounced back to be a decent pitcher, maybe slightly better than decent, in the Erik Bedard type class. Bedard is on the way up and Zito was more on his way down, but obviously in offseasons everyone's hope is that he recaptures his 23 win stuff. But anyway, Santana's "bad" 2007 was better than most of Zito's normal years, and I feel better now.

Hampton is another story -- his numbers and pitching style before he came to the Mets were very remniscent of Johan, I hate to say.

What I love is the fact that we get the best pitcher in baseball and he isn't even starting opening day.

Don't get me wrong -- I WANT Santana and I make the deal WITH F-Mart in it. My point is just countering aus1331 who seems to be in the camp of people that totally disregard that Martinez will one day be ready to play in the bigs, maybe great maybe not, but when I hear morons agreeing with Mad Dog, who says things like: it's just 5 prospects, you're gonna let the 5th prospect get in the way of making a deal? And senseless remarks about giving them any 5 prospects in your entire organization, they are just 'prospects', etc etc... come on. Most teams wouldn't give away their #1 prospect ALONE for Santana, the Mets farm is not THAT bad that Hughes, Homer Bailey, etc are better than our top 5 guys combined.

SO my fingers are crossed that Omar gets this done without giving up Pelfrey and Martinez, the two guys I personally think have the most upside and are most likely to succeed.

I remember the same type of comments about David Wright. You don't want to just give away a bunch of these guys in one deal. People who never saw them play and are short-sighted tend to not realize that they re real players with real upside, and you'd be replacing them with garbage heap.

And don't tell me about the three first round picks that they would have if they don't make trades too. Suddenly guys that are two years further from MLB are good enough for the future but the guys you invested money and time in are meaningless? You can't have it both ways.
