By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 12, 2008 1:05 pm

The Cardinals and Blue Jays are close to swapping 3B Scott Rolen for 3B Troy Glaus, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

Rosenthal also details how each player’s contract and required physicals could impact the deal.

Pretty even swap if you ask me. As Rosenthal said it just gives them both fesh starts. YAWN!!!! Come on Omar get us Johan so we can be excited for this year.

  2. Achilles400 says:

Big news! Trading an injury plagued has been power hitting third baseman with a bloated contract for an injury plagued has been power hitting third baseman with a bloated contract. Should tip the poser of balance in the AL East and NL Central!

    • Nate W. says:

lol! basically proof that neither player has any trade value what so ever.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Its pretty obvious that Cerrone was dying to post a non Santana related story, so he just found this :)

  3. 7 Train to Maine says:

Yikes! Never saw that one coming. Didnt Glaus get caught with HGH. Why would the Cardinals want him. LaRussa and Rolen obviously did not have the best relationship. Glaus has just had an injury prone career since that magical year in 2002 when he was World Series MVP. He has the potential to be an above average 3rd baseman if hes healthy. Rolen has also had injury problems and has not had a good offensive season since that monster year in 2004. Rolen was always slightly above average on offense but his defense was always top notch.

I think if he can stay healthy, the Cards win with Glaus. Glaus is capable of playing gold glove defense (still not quite Rolen) and he has major pop on his bat. Hes guaranteed to hit at least 25 homeruns. Blue Jays on the other hand should be grateful if Rolen even breaks .300. He might hit 20 homers, who knows, he was never a big power or RBI guy.

The good news for the Mets. Rolen being out of the league could get a Wright a few more gold gloves, who knows.

Plus was anyone thinking how crazy defensively the BlueJays left side will be. John McDonald and Rolen are exceptional defenders. Nothing will get past those guys. Plus they have Aaron Hill/Russ Adams/ David Eckstein platoon at 2nd with Overbays great defense at 1st. Blue Jays might have the best infield defense. If they could find a way to fill that hole in left with Matt Stairs, they WILL have the best defense in the league with Wells, Rios and Zaun behind the plate.

    • Nate W. says:

wouldnt Eckstein be the everyday SS?

I agree that MacDonald is a better defender, but I cant see them using Eckstein as a utility player. I caught the Yes network preview of the AL East and they basically lumped the Blue Jays in with the Rays and Orioles as being absolutely awful. Not having Ryan closing certainly hurts them, but they are still a class above the Orioles and Rays.

      • mets17 says:

I think it is a mistake to make Eckstein the everyday SS, John McDonald is a great fielding SS, I would say move Eckstein over to 2B, I like him there more anyway.

    • Slob says:

      David Eckstein sucks.

  4. adropofvenom says:

And the winner of the most pointless trade of the year goes to…..

    *Drumroll*

The Cardinals and the Blue Jays!

  5. cver says:

It would normally be very difficult to see how or why the Cards would trade Rolen. After reading the full story in the article, it is clear that these are not normal circumstances. Quite an interesting trade proposal, which looks like it might happen.

  6. Metsfan980 says:

What are the Blue Jays thinking?

Although both are on the decline and have both been injury plagued players, Glaus is still at least above average at third, while Rolen has become one of the most mediocre starting 3B in the game, but he’s paid like the best.

Glaus must have had a poor recovery from his surgery for this trade to make sense for the Blue Jays, especially considering how bad their infield is offensively.

Essentialy, they’re trading one of their most productive bats over the last few seasons for a defensive-minded player.

  7. It would be more intersting if Scott Rolen swaped wives with troy glaus on the fox reality show

  8. M.DonaldGrant says:

I don’t know if this will line up properly, but the bottom line is- Rolen’s production is very similar to Delgado’s, for about $4 million less per year, much better defense (at a position where defense is at a premium) and he never played ‘bored’. Before we laugh at this trade, maybe we should see if Toronto will take him instead for Glaus.

    • stickguy says:

But what would we do with Glaus? Can he play 1B?

      • M.DonaldGrant says:

I figured he would be easier to trade than a DH who can’t hit anymore. But if we’re stuck with him- he has played SS and 3B- and hit .361 vs LHP last year. Platoon him at 1B and make him backup infielder on off-days?

  9. Metsfan980 says:

You’re argument is valid if you assume that a 0.052 OPS difference isn’t that significant; however, it is.

Rolen is a lot less likely to rebound to his former offensive numbers than Delgado is, who last year actually had a pretty solid second half, because of past injuries.

Shea stadium actually boosts left handed offensive numbers slightly (99 AVG index value and 89 HR index value out of 100 over the past three seasons), which gives further reason to favor a left handed declining veteran than a right handed one.

Also, the offensive downgrade from Delgado to Rolen wouldn’t exactly be made up by the defensive “improvement”. Acquiring Rolen would force either Rolen or Wright to first, which would surely diminish most of their immediate defensive value.

Finally, Rolen is owed another $35.4m guaranteed over the rest of his contract (signed through 2010), while Delgado is only owed another $20m guaranteed (signed through 2008). Both are players that teams should be looking to avoid long term commitments to, and Delgado is much easier to avoid.

Swapping Delgado for Rolen is a very poor move.

    • M.DonaldGrant says:

I would be more inclined to agree if Randolph hadn’t left Delgado @ cleanup in a much better offense for months- a blind squirrel could have produced in that spot.. Rolen didn’t have that luxury.

Sorry if I was unclear- I wasn’t looking to acquire Rolen- just dump Delgado on TO and then trade Glaus who would have a much bigger market.

For all the dreamers who expect a rebound, remember Delgado hit .265 in ‘06 before his injuries- he is on a very steep decline and will hit no better than .240 this year- but maybe the booing will keep him from being too bored.

      • didn’t he hit over 300 after the all-star break.
And I don’t know how you are critizing his 06 campaign, where he was so good at driving runs in, not to mention he carried us through the playoffs

        • stickguy says:

I think it was around .285 or so. If they can get that for a full season in 2008, it would be fantastic!

        • M.DonaldGrant says:

It was .285 after the all-star break- based on one or two hot weeks. He easily cost us 5 or 10 games (and a playoff berth) with his pathetic .229 with RISP. As for ‘06- after a mediocre season (Mike Carp could have driven in 100 at cleanup in that lineup for a lot less than Vlad-money. Remember Delgado’s getting paid like a superstar). He happened to finally hit a hot streak at the end of the year and had 2 or 3 good games in the playoffs. Woo-hoo!

        • First of all floridas paying alot of the contract. Saying anyone could have driven in 115 is ridiculous. I’m sure you were cheering for him after he hit that 3 run HR in game 2 against the cardinals

      • Metsfan980 says:

Ahh okay, I got the feeling that you wanted to swap Delgado for Glaus from your post.

Glaus is certainly a much better option for the Mets (and he’s played 1B in spring training as well as the minors) than Rolen; however, that trade doesn’t do much for the Blue Jays who already have Overbay at 1B and Thomas at DH.

Also, Delgado should rebound next year (again, if he is rested on a regular schedule and sits against tough lefties), being that he posted an .844 OPS after the ASB and a .818 OPS overall against RHP. He’s not the player he used to be, but he certainly isn’t what he was last year.

    wow

  11. wolverine193 says:

We’re starting to get to the point of no return here with Santana. If the Mets don’t pull the trigger, and it gets out it was because they wanted to keep a prospect or there was a contract issue, I can’t speak for everyone else, but I will be one seriously PISSED Mets fan.

I don’t want to hear about Church or Schneider or Wise or any other crap the Mets scraped from the bottom of the barrel, the time is now Mets, get this thing done so you can produce some juice for the upcoming season. I’m tired of looking at Hank Steinbrenner’s ugly mug everytime there’s a baseball story on the back pages of the tabloids.

  12. CHIEFSLAPAHO75 says:

One washed up 3B for another.

  13. MEForeman says:

I always liked Scott Rolen… mostly because Phillies fans hate him because their team sucked and their owners were unwilling to spend money so they traded him… and yet they blame Scott Rolen (but not Curt Schilling).

    Figure that one out.

  14. Uninspiring trade. Glaus is probably better than Rolen at this point. I don’t know if this is the end of Rolen’s career because he is 32, not 42. Kinda funny how the Blue Jays get Eck & Rolen for 2008.

In OTHERR news, any Giant fans? I’m so excited for tomorrow.

I hate the weekends, slow on the posts, nothing happens, I’m ready for Monday to start hearing Santana getting closer n closer to Queens
