Buzz: Mets interested in Ron Villone
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 14, 2008 11:32 am

At Baseball Prospectus, John Perrotto notes that the Yankees, Mets, and Pirates are interested in free-agent LHP Ron Villone.

…well, those are three teams you do not see listed together very often…here’s my guess, the Pirates are interested, and the Mets and Yankees are being dragged in for leverage…or, at least that’s my hope

In his last 134 relief appearances, spanning three seasons with the Marlins and Yankees, Villone, 38, went 6–5 with a 5.11 ERA.

…anyway, if the Mets are interested, i’m hoping their level of interest does not extend beyond a minor-league deal, at best…

…i’m all for inviting anyone and everyone to spring training, as long as he can throw 60 feet…the thing is, the last time villone finished a season with an ERA below 4.00, Butch Huskey, Bobby Valentine and Lance Johnson were roaming the Mets dugout…seriously

No mention of him being on the Mitchell report?

That’s right we usually sign only roided up relievers…se Mota and Schoenweis.

you have to remember–omar is in on EVERY possible trade and EVERY possible free agent. He is the proverbial “car-chasing dog.” (With thanks to Bob Klapisch)

Isn’t Villone a lefty? If so, we really have no need for him (or roster space) with Feliciano and Schoenweiss already fulfilling that role. I really hope Willie sticks to the book and uses Schoenweiss strictly against lefties. His splits were terrible (awesome against LH hitters, HORRIBLE against RH)

  3. JohnMilner says:

Besides, we need him to throw that additional six inches to make it really worth our while. 60 feet won’t quite cut it. ~:c)

I was just gonna say…the problem with Villone isn’t the 60 feet, it’s the last six inches that’s the problem. Villone was AWFUL.

This has to be a negotiating play. We already have three lefties in the pen – Wagner, Shoenweiss and Felciano. All three on their worst days are better than Villone on his best day.

Why the hell would anyone be interest in Ron Vallone at this point in his career? Desparation.

Any lefty can find work until they are officially retired, and even then they can be dragged back. I can almost guarantee if Orosco said he wanted another try, someone would invite him to spring training.

    • Nate W. says:

pretty much. He’s mostly a mop up guy at this stage in his career.

He is a bit of a rubber armed guy, didnt he throw like 3-4 innings of relief against the Mets in some blow out two years ago? The Pirates can certainly use that with all thier young starters.

I imagine if he accepts a minor league deal it will be with a NY team like last year as he is from the NY area.

  5. Giaco says:

MetsBlog should definitly do a “where are they now” of past Mets like Butch Husky, Benny Agabayani, Brian McRae, Rico Brogna, Mel Rojas, Jeff Innis, Bill Pulsipher, Greg McMichael, etc.

    • JohnMilner says:

Brogna is currently working as a scout, for, I believe, the Diamondbacks. He’s been on the XM MLB channel a couple of times and is a very good interview. A very bright guy.

    • ravi3 says:

Agbayani plays on the Chibba Lotte Marines under Bobby V….Last I heard, Pulsipher was with the Mariners, but I think it was just for a spring training invite a year or two back

  6. Mets Fan in Peru says:

I wouldn´t even hire him to be the bat boy. This guy just flat out blows. I used to love watching him (try to) pitch for the Yanks and watching him get teabagged by the opposition. Good times.

I say nay nay to Villone.

  7. Cerrone says:

Yes, but that was only for part of the season. His final ERA that season was over 4.00.

  8. Nate W. says:

actually its 4.08 for the 2005 season which he split with the Mariners (2.45) and Marlins (6.85) so it holds up.

  9. Metalmirq says:

    yes u are correct
