Buzz: No Interest in Piazza
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 14, 2008 1:30 pm

According to the Miami Herald, Mike Piazza is interested in playing for the Marlins, who do not have interest in Piazza.

…i’m sorry to say it, but i think it’s the end of the road, mike…hang ‘em up, kiss your wife and baby, and shift to a more simpleyou’ve earned it…

By the way, according to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, in addition to the Brewers and Mariners, the Marlins are interested in signing free-agent OF Luis Gonzalez.

In 27 at-bats last season against the Mets, while playing for the Dodgers, Gonzalez hit .333.

Seriously, what does this guy have to prove anymore? He’s a first ballot HOFer. I hope he doesn’t end up like Mickey Mantle circa 1967.

Perhaps he just doesn’t want to admit that he’s getting older.

Hang em up big fella. You are the best CATCHER (not just hitting –thats beyond obvious) of all time. No need to hang around as a DH/RH Power Bat of the bench. Enjoy your life. Get into TV, media, or nothing. You are also probably the best hitter in Met and Dodger history.

…and arguably, and I repeat arguably, the greatest right handed hitter of all time…

look in a big spot im taking piazza over arod but i mean statistically speaking the argument for piazza holds very little water compared to the likes of arod, pujols, or manny ramirez. Piazzas probably my favorite athlete of all time but i mean lets call a spade a spade.

I love Piazza, but you cant say the best RH hitter ever (even arguably). Jimmie Foxx, Rogers Hornsby, Albert Pujols are all definitely better than Mike. It wouldve been interesting to see what Mike couldve done had he not been a catcher/played 150 games a year at top level for 15 years. You could make the argument that not only would he have increased his career totals like homeruns and RBIs, but his average and slugging could have gone up as well. He did tend to slow down in Septembers at times possibly due to tired legs. Having said that, the other are clearly still ahead of him.

Come on Mike, retire, let the mets sign you to a 1 day contract, retire as a Met….

I’d love to have him back for the whole year, if there was room. But that one day contract stuff just cheapens the sports that do it.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him come in to close Shea down and come off the bench, but that will probably never happen. See you at the HOF in 4 years Mike.

i mean the ONLY was that would happen is if we are either so far out of it, or so far ahead

We better retire Big Mikes number the season that he decides to hang ‘em up. This franchise has done countless injustices when it comes to celebrating our past heroes and they better not make another misstep with Piazza.

You can understand the Marlins not wanting to tarnish what Piazza accomplished in his first stint there.

It was probably the greatest 7 days in Marlins history. I wonder if Mike even unpacked he had to know there was no way his was sticking around. The Mets trade for Mike is another example of being cautious on prospects. None of the guys we sent to the Marlins really ever developed into a guy you could not easily replace.

On a side note the Marlins could use someone like Mike to be veteran leadership for those younger players maybe knock some sense into Olsen.

I am suprised some team will not pick him up and give him 200 at bats. Let him be a back-up DH/ Back-up Catcher, bench bat for some team. Let him get about 200 AB. He has to have SOME value left. If he is not okay with that sort of role it might be time for him to retire.

Regardless my hat is off to Mike P.

Piazza was always my favorite Met. The guy had an unbelievable career, its sad he never got a ring. Either way i think its time to sit back relax and count down the days till cooperstown calls you up.

PS: i wouldnt mind seeing him go to espn maybe we could finally get someone to be on our side in the media.

Nothing will take away what Mike did for the Mets. If the man wants to keep playing, then I want him to keep playing. He can be a productive bench bat/DH and it’s his perrogative whether he wants to keep going. I won’t think any less of him.

The Mets should bring him back as a player off the bench and let him retire as a Met. That way he goes into the Hall of Fame as a Met. If the Mets had room for Julio Franco for 2 seasons then they have room for Mike P. He would be fine as a 3rd string catcher, first righthanded PH off the bench and emergency 1B.

The Mets definitely should retire his number. I still think they ought to retire Mex’s 17 and pehaps the Kid’s 8 and maybe even Mookie’s 1.

ive never understood why the mets dont acknowledge their former great players the way pretty much every organization in sports does. wilpon probably doesnt want to pay for the additions he would have to make to shea for the numbers.

Certainly Mike, Mex, and Gary…Mookie might be a bit of a stretch.

They should retire Mookie’s name instead.

I know Mookie is a stretch…..however, the guy was the happy warrior through some of the leanest times in franchise history, became a fan favorite for his hustle and positive attitude through thick and thin, and ultimately was integral to the most memoable play (and most memoable AB) in team history.

I do agree it is a stretch…..but this franchise has long stretched too far in the direction of ignoring its history.

Don’t get me started on all the Dodgers and NY baseball Giants-themed/named attractions at CitiField. The Robinson rotunda is fine and appropriate for innumerable reasons. But why “The Orchard” and why “Coogan’s Landing” and why “Ebbets Club”? With names like Stengel, Hodges, Seaver, McGraw, Koosman, Agee, Mex, the Kid, Mookie, Bob Murphy and, um, Bill Shea…why not recognize METS history?
