Buzz: Mets Prefer Bedard to Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 15, 2008 12:16 pm

Despite the recent rumors connecting the team to Twins LHP Johan Santana, the Mets actually prefer Baltimore’s Erik Bedard, “Since he wouldn’t require the same lucrative extension as part of the deal,” writes Lisa Kennelly citing a Mets official in the Star-Ledger.

…they may also prefer to invest in time travel to help erase last September, but it doesn’t mean there is any chance of it happening

…at any rate, from what i understand, among the rumored big-time pitchers, it was RHP Dan Haren who the Mets wanted most…the thing is, as i have written before, the O’s will want far more than the Mets can part with – just ask the A’s, who got six prospects for haren, who the Mets never really had a chance of getting…

…lastly, as i once mentioned, i sense there is some truth to the idea that the O’s are reluctant to deal with the Mets, for reasons associated with Kris Benson’s health…fact is, in addition to the benson issue, the Mets lack the talent to get bedard and so it only makes things that much more complicated…

In a recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wrote that a trade between the O’s and M’s involving Bedard ‘is only one player away from competition.’

The deal is likely to include M’s OF Adam Jones, among other minor leaguers, explains Rosenthal.

According to Rosenthal, “The Mets made a strong run at Bedard at the general managers’ meetings in November.”

The Mets had offered Aaron Heilman, Carlos Gomez and Philip Humber to the O’s for Bedard during early December, according to ESPN.com and MLB.com, among others, but it was rejected.

Considering an M’s/O’s Bedard deal seems very close, and that the Mets’ chances of getting him are slim at best regardless, maybe this is some disinformation from the Mets front office, hoping they can get the Twins to bite in response (a la Hankenstein’s constant we’re in/we’re out waffling).

    Otherwise, I don’t get it.

    • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

SNY is also starting to “sour” on the Johan deal, so I think you may be right. The Mets PR machine is trying to convince the Twins and others that they are moving on.

      • shea_guevara says:

They talked about Santana a lot on Mets Hot Stove last night. Considering SNY is basically run by the Mets, I feel like the team’s interest is active and legitimate.

If it wasn’t, SNY would probably be tying hard to convince us all of the virtues of Bartolo Colon, Kyle Lohse, and others.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Agreed, and that is what happened.

From what I saw, Lockhardt said the deal for Santana was bad and that they should be getting Lohse.

  2. Kalihan42 says:

My take is that this is a complete bluff to get the Twins to make a decision or maybe pull the trigger without the extra prospect. The O’s do not seem interested in making Beddard a Mets so this is a pretty bad bluff, but someone has to kick start the Twins front office here a bit.

  3. Steal Home Jose! says:

No, no no no no no….

  4. mightypiazza says:

of course u will hear NOW that the mets dont want to go after SANTANA…because the season ticket deadline is over TODAY…they hyped it up so people would buy season tix and then drop the bomb on the day the money was supposed to be in….way to go mets

  5. MetsFanInVegas says:

That deal should have got rejected..Gomez, Heilman, and Humber for Erik Bedard? He is better than Heilman and Humber, at his best, put together, Gomez should be in the offer but you have to add a little more than that to get a pitcher at Bedard’s level

  6. HOFMets57 says:

I’m starting to get the sense we’re not getting ANYBODY. If Santana isn’t with the Yankees OR Red Sox when the season starts, I will know for sure the Wilpons’ purported ‘green light’ was just P.R. and grandstanding. They never had intention of signing that lucrative a contract. Omar was fooling himself into thinking he could acquire ace pitchers like Haren and Bedard for those kinds of packages. You’re talking about the strikeout king (Bedard) who throws in the high 90s for a setup guy, an unproven prospect and a young pitcher who just had TJ surgery who can’t even hit 90 anymore. What is wrong with our front office???

  7. The Glider says:

Ok, no need for us to get bogged down discussing Bedard anymore.

  8. aus1331 says:

I don’t get this. If the Twins think this trade is some what good enough for J.S., then why is it not good enough for Bedard? And, I am not buying that John Maine theory. I can’t stand the media some times, one person tells this story another tells that story. All I care about is that the Mets get a Stud/Ace pitcher for the SP Staff before the season starts.

  9. cver says:

Sounds more likely that the writers are ooking for something, anything to write about besides Santana and the Mets and/or Omar is putting this out there to try to gain some leverage with the Twins.

  10. guierllNO MOta says:

Cerrone, you just stated that the Mets dont have the chips to acquire bedard (if he is even available) as anyone on this site will tell you that is a false statement and we could easily get Bedard for Burgos or Gotay or maybe even AHern since he was a defensive prospect in 2004….

and you mean someone who had as good # as Santana last year while being locked up for 2 more years and NOT making 20MM a year is a more attractive option?!?!?!?

  11. zen says:

“Since he wouldn’t require the same lucrative extension as part of the deal.”

    meet the wilpons
    greet the wilpons
step right up and greet the wilpon

  12. LittleWillie says:

Win now – that’s what we should want for this team!

Trade 1 — Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, Niese for Santana
Trade 2 — Fmart, Heilman, Guera, Gotay for Bedard

*Yanks are out, Boston is only in b/c of the Yanks. If twins want another arm, give it to them!

*O’s want 2 mlb ready and 1 or 2 good prospects (also keen on position players and looking for late innings)

*Johan, Bedard, Maine, Perez (Pedro if he remains healthy) is the best rotation in baseball for the next 3-5 yrs.

*Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Castillo are all locked in and vital

*Church, Schneider locked in and serviceable

*Give extension to Delgado if he plays well. We already know he doesn’t need to be great

*At most looking for 2 FA for 2009, neither of which must be stellar.

*I don’t see the need for a top farm system with this team. We are not even close to rebuilding. Let them go and bring home 2 rings

    • therealsince86 says:

So even though our package of
Gomez, Mulvey, Guerra, Humber is not currently good enough if we switch out Guerra for Neise it will be? There is no way the Twins do that.
Now your Bedard trade seems possible. I think we should focus on plan A first.

I did mention this a long time ago. Assuming we can’t get either would we settle for adding Blanton and Snell?
Pedro, Maine, Blanton, Snell, Perez? That’s young rotation (aside from Pedro) with potential.

  13. guierllNO MOta says:

littlle willie that package wont even get you a discount on a game ticket from the Twins…thast why you cant cause Santana will cost all pitching prospects as well as either gomez or fmart and maybe both…since the mets pitching prospects are not too well though of…

No one wants Humber, Gotay is worthless for the last time…we got him for Jeff keppinger!!!!!!!

  14. dave27 says:

Benson pitched an entire season for Baltimore before getting injured. What the hell are they whining about?

If we don’t have a beef with Tampa over Zambrano, who lasted 3 starts before getting hurt in 2004, they have no beef with us.

  15. icedrake523 says:

Obviously the Mets prefer the guy they don’t have to give a record setting deal to. The difference is that guy is on a team with an insane owner who wants more than the Mariners 3 top prospects (which are better than anything the Mets have).

  16. The Only Jefferies Fan says:

I hate to say this, but the Mets can quit bitching about this extension.

OK, so Santana wants at least 5 years, probably 6 or 7… Didn’t Gil Meche get 4 last year? At 10M a year?

Kyle Lohse wants 3 years at 10M a pop! He sucks.

Carlos Silva got 4 years, and 44M. He sucks too.

Give Johan his $20M for 6 years, as I think he’d accept a 6 year/120M deal from the Mets.

In todays baseball market, you get Carlos Silva and Gil Meche for $20M, or Johan Santana.

    Hello….McFLY!

    • The Captain says:

oh that mcfly comment’s great, listen if Santana goes free agency after 08, and stays healthy with a solid 07, he might get 7 years at 26 mil each, so 20mil now at 6 yrs is a discount already, the delema is even getting to the table to negotiate this contract extension. I also hope all are chips we speak about are not playing in the mexican leauge or whatever right now and getting banged up.
