During his appearance last night on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal had the following to say about the Mets interest in free-agent RHP Kyle Lohse…
“I think Lohse is certainly a player they’re interested in, and while he hasn’t done much in his career, the Mets like his stuff, they like his durability, his age and they like the fact that he competed down the stretch for Philadelphia…He, essentially, is this year’s Gil Meche: a guy with a world of ability, who hasn’t put it together yet…My problem with him would be giving him three or four years at big money.”
By the way, SNY’s Mets Hot Stove airs live at 6:30 pm and again at 11 pm every Monday.
Lohse is now willing to accept a three-year deal with a vesting option, as opposed to the four-year deal he had been rumored to be seeking, reported Rosenthal over the weekend at FoxSports.com.
During a recent appearance on XM’s MLB Live, Lohse said that at least three teams are interested in signing him.
In 34 starts for the Reds and Phillies last season, the 29–year-old Lohse was 9–12 with a 4.63 ERA, while striking out 122 batters through 192 innings.
Additionally, Rosenthal had the following to say about the A’s, and whether they’ll trade Joe Blanton…
“I think what they’re waiting for is Santana to get traded or not, Erik Bedard to get traded or not, and then they’ll be sitting with a pitcher that others teams want.”
In a report yesterday for MLB.com, an A’s source said he expected Blanton to be Oakland’s opening day starting pitcher.
Last season for the A’s, Blanton was 14–10 with a 3.95 ERA through 34 starts, during which he allowed an average of just one walk per start.
He made at least 32 starts in each of the last three seasons.
He is eligible for salary arbitration this off-season, and the two after that, and is eligible for free agency after 2010.

This is like deciding between liverwurst and olive-loaf on my sandwich.
I’d rather just eat bread.
I’d take both of those. Delicious.
Kyle Lohse is no better than Pelfrey of Humber. I’d rather hand one of them the ball. I’m not discounting Mulvey, but he’s gonna get his innings in AAA. I’m also a huge Mike Devaney fan, and expect him to bounce back in 2008. he’s a big kid with a heavy ball – good for Shea.
Joe Blanton? An upgrade, but at what cost? FMart is the new Milledge, so I can guess we won’t be pulling the trigger on a deal with Oakland.
Seriously, if we need a back up plan, I’d hand Boomer a ball and a buffet and let him make all the starts that El Duque doesn’t make
Boomer? Umm I don’t see that being a good idea. I would go with the kids or Blanton if we can somehow get him at a reasonable price, which doesn’t seem likely. I would not sign Lohse to anything other than a 2 year deal with a team option for a third and it would not be in the double digits per year. Santana is still up in the air but it is not looking good at the moment. I would sign Colon for a year, if possible and sign Garcia for 2. Let the kids play if we don’t get Santana.
i don’t like either of these guys
Here are my FA offers.
Loshe and Livan 3/24 with TEAM option for 10 million 2 million dollar buy out.
Colon and Garcia 1/6 with 10 million option and 2 million buy out.
I know these are not great pitchers but Livan and Loshe could be servicable 5th starters and although I would rather “give the ball to Pelfrey” you have to expect both Pedro and Elduque to go down. Then you have Pelfrey and Humber starting. As much as we would like to think they can, there is no promise that they can keep an ERA uder 5.00. We have absolutely no idea what they will give us.
I’d offer Lohse a shiny nickel per year to fill our players cups with gatorade.
assuming no santana, i would like to see early commitment to AAA New Orleans starting rotation of Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey and Vargas …. Burgos as closer … and Gomez as every single day OF. Let them know that’’s where they will be, period, no confusion, no distraction, at least until all star break. Either they are legit prospects, or no, but we would have better idea of what we have got.
Fill out the Mets with either Sosa or some 5th starter re-tread, and get Kevin Mench to platoon with Church in RF. Roll with this until midseason and see where we are at.
that is assuming no santana.
If my memory serves, Burgos is going to be out for a LONG while…
at least most of the year due to TJ surgery… Most likely the whole year
Vargas is out of options, and would have to clear waivers to get to AAA. Which isn’t all that unlikely given the year he had last year.
The problem with putting both Pelfrey and Humber at AAA most of the year (seems to be your plan) is that it is their last options years and you need to get a good sense of whether they are ready or not. Its not bad to go into ST 2009 with Humber as an unknown thats out of options, but having Pelfrey in the same spot makes it rather difficult. In 2009 Do you give 2/5 of your rotation to them, or risk losing them to a waiver claim? Then need to learn about Pelfrey on the big league level this year.
AAA: Humber, Mulvey, Bostick, Vargas, Jose Sanchez and Sal Aguilar give them a decent amount of AAA starters.
AA: Bob Parnell, Eric Brown, hopefully Niese, and roster fillers.
St. Lucie: Guerra, Tobi Stoner, and a bunch of last years Cyclones (Gee, Owen, Eric Niesen)
?? : hopefully guys like Devaney and Mike Swindell can regain themselves and join AA later in the year. (btw, what good is Devaney for Shea when the Mets will be playing at Citi Field in 2009? ;) )
I’m sure I’m missing a few, but thats about how I think it will shape up for 2008.
Lohse for 2 years/16 million total, with an option year, seems about right based on talent and performance. basically someone to fill out the back of the rotation, give them some depth, eat some innings, and give the kids a chance to develop.
Plus, not such a big commitment he wil lbe an albatross to the team.
Plus, there is always the chance he could do a Meche and finally have a career year!
Garcia on an incentive type deal though sounds intriquing. COuld be a life saver at mid year. Or just a big waste of (not my) money!
dam, that is some complete response Nate W. … good job. On pelfrey, didn’t mean that he would be down all year, but at least until all star break. Seems like Mets rush guys up levels, set them up to fail, damage confidence and prospect value all at same time. i think all those guys, pelfrey included, would benefit from having clear stretch of time where they can just let talent take them. Team would benefit by rehabbing prospect reputations if those guys, Pelfrey included, would dominate at AAA for three months.
Offer Lohse a 2 year deal with some kind of option for a 3rd.
